Dealerships are struggling because of greed, OEMs are struggling because of greed...they both charge too much for the product / service they provide...the value equation doesn't add up anymore for the majority of people. OEMs ultimately want a society where everyone leases a car for 3-4 yrs then gets another lease vehicle...and they want to sell direct to consumer...control the price and the demand... Definitely interesting times ahead...

Exactly. You can’t expect to offer poor quality products for a premium price & expect customers to walk like crazy and buy. The pandemic gave dealers & manufacturers a false sense of security with sales and they were arrogant in the idea that people will continue to buy even if they raise prices. The today market is a harsh new reality for them.

I regret selling my fully loaded 2018 Ram 1500 Big Horn back in 2022 when gas prices hit nearly $6/gallon in WA and I was commuting 80+ miles a day. The MSRP was over $50k and I bought it new in 2019 right when the new body style came out so I got it for $36.4k. The finance guy was confused as to why they were selling it for $10k under invoice. I had planned to keep it forever but it didn't make sense at the time. I had kept the miles off of it for a while and only used it on weekends really so it only had 22k miles on it 4 years later. One of my local dealerships offered me $32k for it so I ended up selling it. It was my favorite body style and now you can't get a HEMI anymore. If only I could go back and just buy a cheap beater commuter instead. I miss having a truck and want a 2025 RAM but.. If I want one similarly optioned like my 2018 was but with the 3.0L TT, most dealerships around here still want $60k+. They're trying to liquidate the 2024s right now but still not making large deals on the 2025s yet. What I REALLY want is a TRX but not for $130k + tax..

Last year I leased a brand new 2023 Honda Ridgeline off the showroom floor, the “Honda quality” just wasn’t evident. Panel gaps were not consistent, some orange peel in spots and other quality control issues inside as well and that was the best one they had in stock, so it’s all brands across the board. And now Honda’s 1.4M engine recall on their “bullet proof” V6, my next vehicle will be a used middle 2000’s truck, before purchasing the Ridgeline I looked at all the major brand and they all had issues and they are charging crazy prices for all of them.

Unfortunately, most consumers themselves don't have dealership loyalty. So it doesn't benefit the dealer to make a one time great deal...the people looking for great deals will just shop around wherever the deal takes them. I don't mean that negatively but people who shop, shop. People who don't buy where they buy. The difference is TRUE customer service and experience. If dealerships handle the customer we'll from front to back, AND get a fair deal, that's a win. A friend owns a dealership and will directly say "we don't promise to be the cheapest, we promise to be fair and take excellent care of our customers" and does both of those things.
