It's a short week for us in the Carnage Workshop as we prepare for multiple events. But parts keep arriving for the Ute so we decided to show you the process of dialling in the Crow Cam.
Street Machine Carnage is all about having fun with cars. Sometimes it's serious performance, sometimes it's crazy fun, but it always interesting and done on a budget.

Personally I install camshafts 1 degree advanced from your target centreline with a new timing chain, once that chain goes through it’s initial stretch it retards the cam 1 degree in most cases.

You just need to debur and chamfer all the edges
@DodgyBrothersEngineering
@DodgyBrothersEngineering 4 ай бұрын
@@azza9575that's a start, but there is still more things to be done that can have a big impact on performance. First thing I would be doing is knocking the sharp edges off the piston valve reliefs with a sand roll. Boost means increased cylinder pressure and heat. More chance of uncontrolled detonation or having less timing. Second thing I'd be looking at is the rough casting in the engine valley. That slows down oil return. Lots can be done to chamfer holes to allow the oil to return faster, in SBC we would coat the valley in a varnish to make it more slippery. Block some passages off, while opening others up. Other things can be done but they would be the starting point for me.
@azza9575
@azza9575 4 ай бұрын
@DodgyBrothersEngineering thiS what I ment ,maybe I should have given a detailed reply, I don't what u mean by sanding the piston valve pockets, the pistons shouldn't have any sharp edges on them , if they did I would be looking at a different brand of pistion, I have all my pistons coated anyway
@DodgyBrothersEngineering
@DodgyBrothersEngineering 4 ай бұрын
 @azza9575 most pistons have sharp edges on them it is part and parcel of the way they are made, some people just stick them in as purchased, other take the time to prep the pistons properly. The same way some people will buy after market cylinder heads and just stick them on the engine without pulling them apart and making sure that they are properly set up (check spring heights and pressures) and lapped in. This is the difference between someone who slaps an engine together and someone who builds an engine. Any idiot can buy a catalog of parts and slap them together, the smart guys put the extra effort in to make sure every part is working at its optimum. When pistons are made they are made to a pre-finished state, the valve reliefs are cut after the piston has been formed with a fly cutter to ensure finish and depth of cut are accurate. Take a look at the video, or any photo of a piston that has valve reliefs and you will see a sharp edge where the fly cutter cuts into the piston. Now... What do we know about aluminium? It is an excellent conductor of heat, that is why heat sinks are made out of it. So imagine you have an extreme heat source (combustion) and you have a small knife like edge, guess which part of that piston mass is going to start glowing first. It's not going to be the solid flat mass, it is the sharp edge that is going to be the hottest spot on the piston. Now what we used to do on blown race engines (and I did it on my own N/A engines) was take a die grinder with a very fine sanding roll and blend / roll that 90 degree edge where the fly cutter first touches the piston first taking the sharp point off it. You don't need to get crazy just put a small radius on it so it no longer has a sharp corner on it. Of course you do this prior to any balancing. Not that you would change much as you are doing the same to all the pistons, so the changes should be uniform if you have done it right. But you have just removed the potential hot spot from a high compression engine. Have you ever owned a petrol car that dieseled on? That is because something within the combustion chamber (usually carbon) was hot enough to ignite the fuel even after the car had been turned off. Now add a butt load more pressure / heat in the form of boost and you have the recipe for a problem. When a tuner is tuning the car they might back the timing off because they are detecting knock, this can be attributed to uncontrolled combustion, and guess what causes that... The valley isn't the only place that appreciates a bit of love, the bottom end does as well. Another way to loose HP is to to have oil dripping back over spinning parts like the cam and the crank. So where possible through some careful manipulation you can block and guide oil to where you want it. You have to remember that engines for the most part are not built to extract every single HP out of them, so to get those extra few HP you need to look for ways to improve the basic engine. In some cases you are just building in protection. Show me a single engine that would prefer to have excess oil stuck in the heads and not in the oil pan. The bolt on crowd will fit a high volume oil pump and not give a second thought to getting that oil back into the oil pan. Then they wonder why all these expensive parts they bought just failed because they spun a bearing because of lack of oil pressure, because there was no oil. They haven't given a single thought to increasing the oil capacity of the oil pan. They are sucking it up at a greater rate but have given no thought to the oil supply in the pan, and then wonder why their oil pressure is crap at revs. They rev the engine harder and give no thought to trying to stop the oil from frothing and sucking up air causing lack of proper oil supply. These are things you can't buy, these are things that have to be addressed with intelligence. Many decades ago when I was a young fella it wasn't uncommon to run external oil lines on inline six cylinder engine to make sure that number 1 and 6 were getting enough oil at high revs. Fine while running it as a stock engine, but a point of failure once it is pushed to its limits. No block prep shows either a lack of true understanding of a performance engine, or someone that is just plain lazy.

Plain light oil, stop using lube on everything and use plain engine oil for test fitting. You should have washed the cam properly in petrol to remove the protective coating then given it a light coat of oil. You're not spinning it at revs, oil is more than enough for testing.
