Very polished presentation. Thank you. Is definitely a difference When someone is reviewing something and they know exactly what they're talking about. Yours has a flow to it. Many people would need notes to do the same thing. I can tell you have a love of lenses the same as I do, respect.

With the 2x adapter you're supposed to use it in 4:3 mode. That should help
@NoLimitsLi3 жыл бұрын
fascinating, 4:3 mode can be used on both bmpcc and bmpcc4K? I also film anamorphic (although not a lot of projects call for it)...so 4:3 mode will result in 2.4 aspect ratio in the final export?

@@NoLimitsLi if you desqueeze a 4:3 2x anamorphic, yes the result is 2.4:1

I bought one on sale with the Rangefinder. That is 2.4lbs there. I will need to use my tripod for this as well as rail supports. I also tried my 80mm 645 lens with a dumb adapter. My arm was killing me so I cannot report back on that.

Hi Khairil! Thanks for this video, it's quite helpful. I recently got this lens and have it attached to the Nikon Z 50MM 1.8S. It screws right on without any adapters which is great. I am struggling to get any part of the image sharp at all though. I am wondering if I would need the diopters or the rangefinder to help with focus. Or is focusing on a 50mm full frame lens just not possible with this anamorphic adapter?
@mosswareproaudio632811 ай бұрын
Sharp is a relative term here. Worry about the center. I have been using it in Full Frame and it works fine on Full Frame. You just have to use the right lens. I found using a 58mm had serious Vignetting, but when I switched to my MAMIYA SEKOR C 80mm f 2.8 Medium Format 645 lens, with a dumb adapter, I have zero Vignetting. This is as they say in the instructions. This lens is 2.5 lbs and even in a Small Rig rail rig it pulled on my smaller taking lenses making them hard to turn the focus ring. This cannot be good for my old vintage lenses.
@ezbzpop8 жыл бұрын
'50' in the anamorphot name is not the focal length, it's the physical limitation of the adapter, not recommended for the lenses with the front element larger than 50mm

I hope you don't mind me making a few observations as I - like you - are so excited by the idea of anamorphic. (unfortunately I just don't have one!). Firstly, thank you thank you for putting down all your thoughts on the two SLR Magic products. This is such an honest and open review and deserves big thanks. The look in certain of your shots is so organic. It's lovely and so compelling. But I am so surprised SLR magic haven't put a tripod thread on their lens to prevent the problem you talked about. That's nuts! From what I can see, the more access to light you got, the greater the sharpness. The other really big distraction and this is really a Sony problem I think, is the rolling shutter, which really is emphasised especially during pans of big high rises and the like. The talent of the lens is immediately shackled by this. Again on the Black Magic, that didn't seem so bad. I have a GH5 and am so close to getting something, but I hope Leica and Panasonic are looking at the SLR Magic and working on something of their own which might improve on this. Again, thanks!

I love the color in your films here - clearly on a different level than my stuff (which is, admittedly, only just filming my music studio!). Do you have any videos on what you do to get those sorts of organic colors? Also, I actually liked the out of focusness of your videos. I got the SLR Magic 40 1.33X compact and I didn't really like the look, but I feel like maybe I should reconsider, that sharpness isn't everything with these lenses...

Watching this review over and over again doesn't make it feel any older. Always loved it and your other works too! I'm still debating whether on exploring into the anamorphic world or just stick with spherical setups and call it a day, but the cost of even venturing into those projector anamorphic adapters are quite steep man lol. Any chance if you're planning to shoot a project on the x2 anamorphot in the future, would love to check it out on-hand. I've also got a cam setup to shoot at 4:3 mode too to checkout the full potential of the x2 anamorphic stretch! :)

Hi Vince! Thanks for the compliments. I will say if you start getting into anamorphics it can get pricey and not many clients for commercial projects are willing to go real anamorphic (probably because they wanna make sure they can square the frame for insta and FB, sigh) but if I do have one going on I'll hit you up ;) And if you wanna try out the lenses Kicapi rent out the 1.33x one on their site (under accesories).

Hey. Great video. Im completely new to anamorphic lenses/adaptors. Im actually really interested in shooting anamorphic stills as opposed to film. I have a canon 6d. Also a canon 60d(which is APS-C) i have the 50mm 1.8 lens also. What would you recommend i do? Is there a simple adaptor i can buy to fit on my lens and away i go? Or is it more complex than this... Thank you.

Am I missing something or is 85mm FF not the same as 24mm on a BMPC? I mean, I see that it's 34,5mm vs 42,5mm and that different sensor sizes affect the overall outcome in terms of depth of field etc. but basically there shouldn't be a real difference or do you indeed get a much "wider" image vs does it just look wider?
@dezfoto75347 жыл бұрын
It's weird to shoot 2x anamorphic on a 1.78:1 format, it's meant for a 1.33:1 Super 35mm film gate. A 2x squeeze lens gives you a bizarre 3.56:1 aspect ratio on a 1.78:1 sensor/format, so if your camera only records in 16:9, you need a 1.33 squeeze to get scope.
@rpgroome2 жыл бұрын
The 50 actually refers to the max diameter of the front element of the lens that you mount this to, not the focal length.

Hey Khairill.. Very new to anamorphic for DSLR's.. Just wondering, would the Sigma 35mm Art + the GH4 (shooting in HD), be a solid combo ?
@khaimano7 жыл бұрын
That sounds alright, though I haven't tried a 35mm with it on a micro 4/3 sensor, there may be some slight vignetting but I'm not too sure.

What type of rig are you using, and how long are the bars? How would you have to adjust that type of rig to use the anamorphot on a Micro Cinema rather than the Pocket Cinema? Any difference?
@khaimano6 жыл бұрын
I can't remember the full length of the bars off the top of my head, but for the short film they were quite long as the whole set up gets pretty lengthy on the lens side and I also needed to put my battery pack on the rails behind the camera. Regardless of what camera, though, you're going to have the same length at the front of the camera.
@manueljenkin956 жыл бұрын
What do you think would be the minimum focal length required if I were to use a 4:3 crop from the (already cropped from 4:3) 16:9 full frame sensor. Would 50mm suffice in that case? Or if we were to crop out some portion from 16:9 2x to make it 2.66:1?
@khaimano6 жыл бұрын
On full frame I doubt you could go lower than a 50mm if you're cropping out the sides. I tried that with a 50mm on my Sony A7s with this lens and I don't think I could push it further than that.

Khairil, thanks for this reveiw. Ive got a x1.33 adapter plus the rangefinder adapter.. Ive been struggling to find the best lenses to use with both adapters together as the rangefinder vignettes with most of my lenses. Mostly will use it on S35 cameras (Sony fs7, etc) and maybe some PL cameras too. Any experience on whats the widest you can go on a s35 sensor with both adapters?? What lenses did work for you? THanks!
@khaimano7 жыл бұрын
Hi Agustin! From my personal experience, the widest I've ever managed to get on a S35 sensor was with a 35mm combined with a focal reducer. Whilst the 35mm would vignette on full frame, when combined with a focal reducer (or metabones speedbooster) the increased frame size wasn't quite that of a 35mm, more like a 38mm or 40mm. That being said, there was still some slight, soft vignetting and mainly used it in darker shots. I'd be very curious to see how the sigma 30mm would look with it on an S35 camera, that might work. Or maybe a 28mm. Though with the rangefinder adapter there is that added possibility of vignetting. Hope this info helps, and if you'd like to see how the 1.33 looks with a 35mm and focal reducer on an s35 sensor you can see an example of it in this music video I shot for a friend - kzbin.info/www/bejne/bnbWaoqBYq5mi80 - the wide shots where he's center of camera performing were with that lens setup on a Sony FS100.
@abarrutia7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Kahiril. Ive wrote SLR about this, as the adapter seems quite unusable when using the Rangefinder. Without the rangefinder ive managed to use a 35mm even on Full Frame with a little bit of vignetting, but when using it Iseem to even get vignetting with a 55mm. On S35 I tested it with a PL Lomo zoom on a Fs7 and couldnt go wider than 45mm with the rangefinder on. Will try to find a metabones and do some tests with FF lenses and the speedbooster. Will take a look at that clip. Cheers!!

2x is definitely an interesting look, but I feel like the vast majority of filmmakers and videomakers wouldn't actually use it in real world scenarios. The 1.33x probably is a more "realistic" option. By the way, loved your shots, and nice setup for the a-roll!

Unless you're on MFT systems which gives you more room in focal lengths thus allowing you to use more range than a full frame system.
