Tony Barnes here, the Design Director of Strider 2014 (among many other games). First off, thanks for the retrospective/coverage. Top notch stuff. As for "Andrew here was a huge fan of Strider ... whilst working at Double Helix," Andrew NEVER worked FOR Double Helix, and I don't really know if he was a "huge fan" of Strider, either. He was your typical publisher suit-type and was more of a hindrance to the team's progress than a "fan" making his dream game. That was ME. I was the one that remember playing the original Strider in the arcades and it was the first cartridge I bought on the MegaDrive/Genesis. I wrote down a bucket list and on it was, "Make a Strider-like game." I don't really think "Andrew" has that on his bucket list. I agree that the game was a bit too dark and the colors too muted, but not necessarily "gritty". Gritty is what Grin wanted to do and what I CONSTANTLY had to fight against, from execs. They would've been happy with "Gears of Strider", but as a life-long fan, I knew that wasn't the right way to go. One of the reasons Strider is beloved, is the colourful / over-the-top nature of it all. It's unashamed in its absurdity and it was a constant battle with execs to keep them from washing that away. The "Metroidvania"-style was chosen for the very reasons you said. A 30-minute arcade game wouldn't fly and to build a 6-8hr Bayonetta-style action/adventure would've taken more than 24 people / 14 months. Also, I was paying homage to ALL Striders, including the NES version. Anyway, thanks again for the coverage. Great videos. /subscribe!

Hey, Tony. Thanks for your contribution to making Strider 2014. Remember seeing you in the behind the scenes video talking about how big a fan you were/are of the original game. I'm also a huge fan of that game and even reached out during the production of Strider 2014 to try to help after I first saw some of the early videos in order to try to make some corrections, but strangely never heard anything back (although most of the fixes I suggested seemed to have been implemented in the end). Anyway, thanks again for making what I consider to be one of the very best Strider games out there. I can't say it's better than the original (really just because of my extensive history and loyalty with it) but it absolutely murdered the official Strider 2. That game had some serious game play problems that really killed it in my mind. Would love to hear more about your personal Strider 2014 contributions in much more detail one day, if you ever find the time.
@tonybarnes29204 жыл бұрын
@@echelon2k8 thanks for the kind words. I really just wanted to make a game the fans would like... a game that wasn't all grim-dark Gears of Strider, like many execs wanted. As for feedback, all of it is welcomed and luckily, I pay attention and lurk in many forums. When you're a developer, working with a publisher, you often have no control over the communications you can make, so reaching back is rare. It's to keep the devs faceless (re: powerless) and to control the brand. Now that I have my own company (RetroNinja), I can speak more freely about the games I'm making. So, remember, just because you don't receive a certified letter from a developer, doesn't mean they weren't listening and implementing things, where they make sense.
@echelon2k84 жыл бұрын
@@tonybarnes2920 Yeah, I suspected as much, considering some of the changes I had suggested most likely wouldn't have been fixed otherwise. Still, I'm very happy that they were and that your game turned out as good as it did. It had felt like almost forever since Strider 2 was released at that time and for me personally that game was pretty disappointing, so I was very happy with all your efforts back then with all your game's improvements. It really was such an exciting time for Strider fans, and you guys did actually thank us for any contributions in a way in the Special Thanks section of the credits with the "Striderpedia and fans at Strider Citadel" line. That little surprise was much appreciated.

Useless trivia: Strider is one of only a handful of CPS1 games to use the "starfield" background layers of the hardware. I think a combination of Genesis Strider and the adventure of the original NES level-choosing would be really cool. More items to pick up and abilities to learn and find. Maybe add in a bit (And I mean a bit) of parkour like in mirror's edge. I also think it'd be cool to have a very interesting and touching storyline like the MEtal Gear Series since the Striders do have a bit of a storyline and a clear reason to fight. I think adding a hillbilly helicopter pilot with a basset hound or something for comic relief would be a nice touch as well because the game is very serious, but only for like .00004% of the game. I don't want to take a serious story about a serious serious problem of global communism and turn it into a cringefest. I like the idea of rushing through and slaughtering clearly Chinese martial artist women as well. You can tell that hatred for Communism and globalism is poured into the game, and I enjoyed it as a kid.

You left out an addition to the Strider story. Street Fighter V has established that Zeku, the master of Guy from Final Fight, went on to form the Strider. After Guy defeated Zeku and became the newest grandmaster of the Bushinryu style, Zeku disappeared. Zeku reappears in Street Fighter V, now able to transform between two physical forms, where he promotes the new organization that he is creating. The new physical form is a young version, wearing a Strider outfit, with various moves based off of Strider Hiryu's abilities, and with his attacks creating a similar visual effect as Strider Hiryu's sword swing.

That era between '88-'92 Capcom could do no wrong. I was a arcade addict and enjoyed games like 1943, Ghouls n Ghosts, Final Fight, Strider, Mercs, Willow and Street Fighter II - never could get into Captain Commando; I also like their 2 Dungeons and Dragons arcade entries. Capcom (to me) fubared on the idea of not pushing sequels to some of these entries sooner. Ghouls series and the Strider series could've been pushed around '93 or '94. I know Strider had a sequel in '99 , but arcades were really become non-existent at that point. Even though Strider 2 it was a good game - nostalgia factor is missing and that's why I prefer the first one.

5:55 I can confirm that is what Japanese high schools look like. Lived in Japan going to high school there back in summer of 2002 or 2003, guys had to wear white tshirt under a buttoned up tucked in dress shirt with black pants and shoes, girls had to wear school girl outfits (white shirts) with skirts.. girls obviously had cute outfits while guys had to die in the summer heat with no A/C and only the windows opened trying to stay awake listening to the teachers. I couldn’t speak great Japanese so I just slept through most of the classes, which wasn’t difficult because the heat made me pass out for most of the day, except for their 2 diff English classes each day I was the star pupil in, one class for reading out loud and one class for writing. Funny even with two English classes a day (they don’t get to choose their language elective like we did in HS) since they start them so late in life on English they never get up to our level, though most Japanese people I encountered had a basic understanding of simple words. So being able to converse was pretty simple to get what you needed across. Tho there was one woman who was fluent in English in that school as a teacher because she was an American from New York so I was very happy to speak with her whenever I could since it didn’t feel like I was trying to have a conversation with a 2 or 3 year old child.

LOL! I think the "American Advert" is actually from Canada. One of the stores is Consumers Distributing and the other is Canadian Tire. Both are Canadian stores. Sadly Consumers closed down in the 90s. Awesome find though. Good memories of that commercial in the Great White North.

Strider (2014) became my favorite in the series. Perfect for me, so much fun, Metroidvania, cool style and gameplay, different color outfits. I do love the others as well minus Strider 2 (Genesis). NES Strider was ok, but don't like it as much as the others, a one and done for me.

I like how that American commercial advertised Spiderman and Strider as they would be rivals in games like MvC and MvC2

Recently saw review of Strider 2 for megadrive and was interested in whole series. So perfect timing for such video, was a great watch. But I wish you looked more at the manga. Not many people talk about it or its story.

I was also the king of another arcade gem that doest get the recognition it deserves....720. I used to get picked up after school sometimes by my alcoholic grandfather who would take me to the bar. While drowning his sorrows would give me tons of quarters and i would go next door to the 7-11 and play 720. I mastered it. I will never forget the killer bees. I was excited when it was released on the ps2 arcade collection but without the swivel controller it doesnt work.

I paid £19.99 for this on my Amstrad when a normal full price game on the CPC464 was a tenner...I loved it in a way that only someone who paid way too much for something can...Thing is looking back I just played the first level up to the centipede over and over again. It was only when emulation became a thing that I even realised there was an ice level immediately after ...I was terrible at games on that CPC

Anyone hear about a Capcom developer who was working on Strider for the PC Engine who committed suicide? Supposedly Capcom gave him a tribute in Street Fighter Zero 2 on Ken Stage by giving Strider a teddy bear as the developer likes to collect teddy bears.
