I might be wrong but fish striking at the boards makes me think they're keying on big baits. They see the boards on top and believe they're bait running away. I've seen them slap huge baits on top, kill them and swallow them when they float down. Just my penny. Thanks for sharing!
@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS

Sure. I agree. Sometimes the bait swims to the board for some kind of cover and it all gets blown up together. Especially when there are multiple Stripers.

keen eye , i was tipped off to the same exact hypothesis as you . BIG BAITS STRIPER LIKEY but the visual key that made me feel my theory could be valid was the 19 inch 3lbs gizard shad . used as bait . foolishly i thought the stripers might enjoy these tender morsels for nourishment but now you got me back to sweet confusion ...i think the stripers love those boards ALOT, and get jealous of the gizz shad proximity to the stripers bff.

How do you deal with strong current and keeping the bait suspended and not floating on top
@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS 3 жыл бұрын
Always go WITH current. Pulling against current is an unnatural presentation. Going with current your bait can swim naturally. If it wants to swim to surface that’s fine. The bait is only in 2-5 ft of water anyway.

What my dad and I do is leave In the evening in the summer time and stop at a place called the herring hut. The we try to find some deep water in almost like an open pocket. The week look at the depth finder and it's a lot of trolling and waiting. If you see something like doppler radar there's a whole bunch of them there. Although you gotta time it right cause sometimes we go to certain spots and its been kinda dead out but then I see people with a tailgate full of them. That's all I really know about it. But when you find a good spot just put a herring on a circle hook and drop it to the bottom, troll around, and hope something bites. Tying up to the dam close to nighttime is a good spot for it

Another great video Mike! Truly enjoyed it! Love watching y’all on southern fresh water. I enjoy pulling boards on Lanier. What is your general rule about how far behind the board to pull the bait? Thanks again!
@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS 5 жыл бұрын
Glad you like it brother!! I GENERALLY put 8-12 feet out on the board furthest from the boat with no weight. 20-30 feet out on board closet to the boat and somewhere in between on the middle board. I sometimes add a split shot to the middle or closest board but not always. This is a general rule, I may put only 4 feet behind if they are swinging at the boards or go as far as 40 ft behind.

Absolutely! In fact I would normally be on the bow chucking some kind of plug to the banks. Even if they don’t hit the plug, they will often follow it and pick up a bait on a board.

@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS

Slightly different but backs of creeks are good all year in mid to late day. Early in the am in winter they will deeper in the creek channel looking for warmer water. As the sun warms up the shallows they will move there.
