Today we're going to strip down a clipless pedal and a flat pedal to inspect the differences and show how each of them works! A lot of parts go into something simple such as a pair of pedals, so here's a breakdown for you.

I used Shimano SPDs when I started MTB with a HT, as I found I just got bounced off flats, then switched to flats when I got a full sus trail bike as I wanted to be able to bail easily, but I miss the quick precise foot placement you get with clipless. The explanation of those crank brothers now has me thinking they might be the perfect middle ground; thanks Doddy!

I remember being a kid when Specialized released their first MTB skate style shoes with cleats. It was probably around 96-98ish. They were so cool looking, and even though I never had SPD pedals, I just loved showing off to my mates that my shoes had a little metal plate under the sole. That meant they were “proper” riding shoes 😎😂 Edit: It’s 20+ years on and I’ve still never used SPD’s 😲 And yes, I’m so out of touch, any pedals with clips/clipless/cleats are SPD as far as I’m concerned 😂

i was a skeptical guy about clipless pedals as I ride enduro and I thought that they were going to be dangerous but as soon as I tried them I fell in love with em. They give you a lot of security, you know that your foot will always be on the pedal. Of course is personal preference. I would recommend everybody that runs flats to run clipless and viceversa. It is a good experience and you can learn from it

At 2:00 you say the pedals are threaded anticlockwise to prevent the pedals from becoming undone. Actually it's the other way around. If you don't tighten your pedals sufficiently they can become undone as you pedal. Think about it; the crank arm rotates clockwise but the pedal moves anticlockwise relative to the crank arm.

Only on one side! One is regular thread, one is reverse thread. So they don't unscrew as u pedal
