When the first train arrived in Astana, formerly known as Akmolinsk, in November 1929, there was no station building present. However, within two years, a small, two-storey structure was erected to serve as the station. In 1961, a new train station was constructed, five times larger than its predecessor. At that time, the address of the building was established, which remains the same to this day - 1 Wolfgang Goethe Street.
The second building was added in 1990, expanding the terminal's capacity to accommodate nearly 2,000 passengers per day. The most recent reconstruction of the old station occurred in preparation for the EXPO-2017 international exhibition. At that time, the distinction between the "new" and "old" train station emerged.
Goethe Street is the main street leading to the train station, stretching for 1.2 kilometers. The area around the old train station still poses a security threat, with the highest number of thefts reported in the city. Tourists and residents are warned about the danger and advised to avoid Goethe Street, especially after dark.
