One of my friends dated a guy for 4 years that told everyone that he graduated from Stanford and was the quarterback of the football team ( extra little detail) it was even on his linked in bio. And he would take her to football games at the stadium he used to play at. Once she ran a background check on him- she found out that not only had he never gone to Stanford, but that he had actually spent four years in federal prison prison for fraud and went by a fake name… people that lie about details like their educational background are almost always con artists and you need to stay the heck away from them.

I was in corporate security and that was common. Very difficult to get a job once you’ve been in jail, a good job with a large corporation, impossible. The cons would cover their jail time with a diploma. I had a wee bit of compassion for these folks because it was a survival tool. In most cases, they were just trying to keep their nose clean and lead a normal life. If you continue to punish these guys, they just end up back in jail.

It is surprising how many people lie about degrees. If you suspect they are lying, call the records department at that school and ask if they have earned a degree at that school; it isn't protected information, and they can give out that information without permission. If the first caller is correct, I would be more afraid for my life. There are many example of people telling elaborate lies - who then go on to kill rather than let the lie get exposed. Because they told an intricate lie that is compounded across time, it makes the truth feel like the end of the world. So rather than face the consequences they kill (family, friends etc) so they never have to face the consequences. I’ve literally seen this exact story twice in true crime documentary’s. Now I’m not saying this guy is in danger. But if his wife is willing to tell a lie this elaborate then there is something seriously wrong. It’s no longer about a lie. It’s about a person being incredibly unwell and doing acts that border on psychosis. He should be afraid and take this more seriously than he is.

My thoughts exactly. I thought of the case of that Frenchman some decades ago who lied about being a doctor for so long, that when he was close to being exposed, he eliminated everyone in his family. This included not just his wife and children, but his own parents, the dog, etc. Caller #1 needs to leave, immediately and quietly without her knowing. Considering she's still ten toes down for her lie, there's no fixing this, truthfully. Someone willing to lie like this to a partner they've been with for 12 years is positively terrifying, and definitely alludes to much more that he doesn't know about her.

It is leads to jail time as well if they end up practicing. I know someone who actually went to federal prison for it for about 7 years. She even worked in a medical clinic, and how she got caught, she didn't know some of the skills required. The clinic then checked with the school records, and she never even attended. It blows my mind that the employer didn't check at the university right away and just trusted what she said and a fake transcript. She faked a transcript by stealing someone else's and editing the name, SS # and birth date. Employers should always request an official copy sent from the school, and a transcript that never touches the hands of the person they are interviewing. The Feds btw can request a transcript without permission, and that is how it was confirmed she committed fraud.

I also lied about finishing college. First, I lied to my parents and then I kept the lie going in case my friends spoke to my parents, and so on. I wasn’t doing anything shady, I was just really struggling with my mental health. Admitting I didn’t finish college meant letting others know I wasn’t okay. It sounds illogical and most people would think we’re evil but we’re not. Maybe some people are just pathological liars but it doesn’t apply to everyone. When your parents place such high expectations on you, you’re afraid to disappoint them. When you were punished for being honest and making normal mistakes, you learn to hide your failures. I live with the shame and guilt every day. I try to not lie about other things, and I’m going back to college so it won’t be a lie anymore.
@alyross2850
@alyross2850 Күн бұрын
I feel that. I came from a home where there would never be approval, never a “good job”, never a compliment. The expectations were high, but truth be told, even those expectations being met would not be enough. So you learn to lie. Teeny tiny mistakes are seen as earth shattering so you can never tell your parents anything at all. It was a life centered around crying over spilled milk. Creates an anxiety that is inescapable. You just cannot trust another person to know that you are not perfect so you start to hide things and those things lead to lies. I get it.

I used to sit in my car and read magazines. Once I started the lie I couldn’t stop. It was a really lonely time. I just wanted someone to accept me and tell me it was ok. Shame is a powerful motivator. I’m now a family man with a 10 year marriage, 3 kids, big community guy, and a highly successful business owner. Lied to my GF when I was 19 about dropping out for a semester. I was a dumb kid who did come clean to her. Took a long time to earn back her trust. We’ve been married 24 years now but I tell her everything because she is my WIFE. I could rationalize (poorly) keeping a secret from my girlfriend, but a lie like this is UNACCEPTABLE when someone DEPENDS ON YOU. When you pledged fidelity and commitment FOR LIFE.

@@christinahek For like a few days. I got severely depressed when my job let me go at the time, and I learned I wasn't going to be able to do the program I wanted to in school. As soon as you find out, it would be good to find a lower qualification like a nurse assistant and support her to start working.
