"By His stripes we are healed" is what their name is from; that's their official band verse. I think their recent work is their best. Keep in mind that their early stuff was NOT uniquely cheesy for their genre, they were an 80's hair band and right on par (if not near the top) with all the other 80's hair bands. They deserve the major respect they've earned for pioneering Christian metal to the level of secular metal. But with that being said, though I do enjoy their early work, 80's hair metal is far from my favorite style. However their modern work is phenomenal; it keeps their signature style, while modernizing it to excellent status. I highly recommend "Fallen" or "Yahweh" off their 2015 (and my favorite album) "Fallen."

@J Sawya not confused at all. I don't get into Stryper's message, but they're phenomenal musicians. The guitar work can get pretty intricate and rival that of bands like Metallica and Megadeth at times. Some translations has it as "By his stripes we are healed" Leads into the bands name. Stryper has some great songs lately like Do unto others. New Stryper album coming out in early 2023. It's hard to believe these guys are still going strong heading into their 60's. Michael and Oz Fox have always been the most underrated guitarists. Robert on the Drums has always been a treat and Tim on base and now Perry are always solid. I love Stryper music from The Yellow and Black Attack to the latest album. Michael is in a side band called Iconic. They just releast two songs. Some big names in this band. Michael solo stuff is amazing and shows his range. Sweet & Lynch is another side project of Michael Sweet to check out.

The album is definitely solid. Do Unto Others is another high point on the album. Yep, he doesn't fix everything right now, but is saving, one day he will make everything new. That thing that's so hard to describe, is a new creation, new life. You (generically speaking) can't describe life to a corpse, you have to give it life, then it will understand.

Very good new song, again. Stryper after their "second-coming" from 2013 has done three excellent records. And Michael Sweet on vocals still delivers, not as angelic high as in 80´s, but show me another singer from the 80´s still at that level ? No, you can´t, there´s only one Michael Sweet. Stryper was one of my favourite bands up until Against The Law, I´m so glad they came back even stronger. Best album is Second-Coming, re-recorded versions of old hits with more mature Michael and clever arrangements. I seldom prefer re-recorded versions of orinals, but in this case, yes.
@racers1153 жыл бұрын
l much prefer his voice now as compared to the 80's, primarily because he made some mistakes on how he sang certain songs which he later regretted and admitted that he wouldn't have done them that way again precisely because to many people (even to this day) they say it sounds just like a woman singing, primarily the ballads, l do remember even people l knew who would hear me playing some Stryper songs back then would say stuff like "l didn't know you were in to chic metal" to which l would have to constantly clarify that it was a man signing and to which they would reply something along the lines of "l just can't associate those vocals with being from a man, it sounds exactly like a woman signing". Michael then made the mistake of recording the album ln God We Trust at an even higher tuning than they had done before and later Michael related that he was having problems even finishing the vocals on some of those tracks because of how high up in tuning he had decided to record them. That's also why after the IGWT album tour Michael intentionally avoided including any of the songs from IGWT for subsequent tours, not only because of how layered the recordings were on that album but because of how high the tuning was which was killing his vocal cords when trying to perform them live. Thankfully Michael came to his senses after IGWT and learned to modulate the characteristics of his vocal tone so as to not sound like a woman singing even when he was singing more in the typical female range. A good example of another male singer who sang many songs in a similar pitch/range as Michael but did not sound like it was a woman singing was Dennis DeYoung from the progressive rock band STYX (fyi a band which heavily influenced Stryper) and that was because of the despite the pitch he was Dennis sang in he still maintained male characteristics of his vocal expressiveness. By the time the Stryper album Against The Law came out Michael had gotten a grip on that and the love ballad on that album "Lady", like Dennis DeYoung did not sound like a "Lady" singing it even though it was still sung in Michael's typical range. Yes in all albums before Against The Law Michael's voice was more elastic and very impressive transition speed, but from Against The Law, the shifts we begin to hear in Michael's singing is not just his voice maturing but rather one can clearly here him using better, more controlled technique. Although nowadays, during live performances, Michael's vocal cords definitely cannot put up with nearly as much of the abuse he used to subject his vocal cords to during their live performances back in the 80's, we do also get to enjoy how his voice has matured and the inclusion of a smokier more guttural rasp at times which no longer has the female tonalities that colored some of the songs he sang in the 80's and personally l think that's a very good thing.
