In this video repaired stucco cracks and explained why new stucco walls can crack. There are many ways to fix cracking on new stucco homes. This is just one way.
FYI, this home is on the Hayward fault line, plus there were two separate substrates we discovered after we accepted this new stucco job.
One, it had just been originally sided with T1-11 Plywood Siding.
As we removed the wood surrounding the windows, we regrettably found another type of wood siding installed by someone without knowledge of the wood siding they installed.
Plus, they built a two-story home next door next to this home after completing the stucco.
This two-story new house development created movements with severe vibrations.
Structural movement is like kryptonite to Superman, not good.
Is it a fault of ours? Of course not, but we fixed it anyway.
Below are a few videos explaining the entire stucco finishing process in detail.
So, please, be our guest and view if you are considering a color finish instead of painting!
• Repair bad stucco patc... Stucco color retexturing.
• Remove wood siding and... New stucco finish removing vinyl siding.
• Make rough stucco smooth Make smooth, heavy textures and stucco.
• Stucco color finishing... integrated stucco color finishes.
• Apply a stucco base co... Applying a skip trowel stucco with a base coat.
The homeowners knew nothing about these facts, so they were also victims.
It was nothing we could not handle to keep folks happy.

I tell ya what Kirk, you are a pro at blending new onto existing. I'm a stucco contractor in the midwest and people don't understand how difficult it can be to blend the new into the old, especially the color. As for the cracking, you do a great job of explaining why it cracks and that its related to building movement. We have a system up here that is designed to not crack, its called Sentry stucco. Get ready for this, we'll start from the substrate and go out to the finish. 1.) Trowel applied moisture barrier. 2.) Mort-Air Vent air barrier. 3.) Metal lath and casing with expansions as needed. 4.) Scratch & brown as normal. 5.) Adhesive basecoat and mesh over the brown coat, like brown EIFS foam. 6.) Acrylic color primer. 7.) Acrylic finish coat....Hows THAT for a stucco system, haha. I personally like good old fashioned stucco but you should look into the system, its crazy advanced but it might be a solution to the cracking problems you have out there. Keep the videos coming Kirk and keep up the great work!

Evening Spencer, Thank you, We have this system here too, I just have never found anyone willing to pay for it. No joke! I had a guy 6-or 7 years ago who wanted a Santa Barbara Smooth Mission Finish, he had his house sandblasted, I told him his home was rare as they beat the crap out of it with the sand and glass, looked like a bad scratch coat. I recommend Polybond type of plaster adhesive with mesh tape on the entire wall then another coat a polybond over it or I could not do that cementitious finish and guarantee it. Man, He nearly called the cops on me when I gave him the costs. He did find a fella do do the finish and they were both in court forever, I found out as the plastering called me for advice. No Joke. It take all kinds, best wishes and have a good evening. kirk giordano

I am really glad I found your videos. I just moved into a new house in California and there are about a dozen hairline cracks in the stucco, some of them quite long. I thought, what the hell is up with that. But after seeing your videos it gives me a lot of comfort to know that it is quite common and normal. There probably is some earth settling going on and yes a lot of construction traffic since they are building new homes around us still. I still plan on bringing it up with the builder but now that I have seen your videos I will go a lot gentler on them. I will most likely expect them to fix them but also understand they can come back. Thanks again for making these, it helps me to understand much better what to expect. I don't often subscribe but in this case I did subscribe to your videos.

Mr. Giordano - I send myself to school every night here on KZbin, learning as much as I can about the industry I am in. I find myself being drawn to YOUR videos more than any other. They are spot on and you address issues that are particularly relevant and pointed. I don't think there is another "teacher" out there that is better! For repairing color stucco cracks, there is a product called eXact Color Caulk by Sashco - it has the same properties of Big Stretch (which is an amazing and resilient caulk). We get out a test board and pigment (latex craft paint will do fine) and get a color match using a hairdryer - we dry the mixed sample until it matches exactly with the stucco color. After we get the match, we mix a larger amount and add it to the caulk with some fine aggregate. If you get the color match right, you can make the crack virtually invisible - this will largely depend on the aggregate match, of course, because as you know, texture match is as important as a color match.

Thank you so much for your video. We live in mid state AZ where it gets cold and warms up during the day. We have been blessed to be able to build our custom home, which was not a reality while living in CA. We like our builder very much although there has been a couple of large mistakes, one being we wanted recessed windows with a bull nosed edge on the outside. They ended up flush. Can't be undone...moved on.....the second is we wanted a smooth Cat Face finish...didn't happen....disappointed to say the least. Had I known this, we would have done siding. I have noticed hair line cracking now.....not painted yet. Move in date is 6 weeks. I was told they would fix the cracks. I assume this should be done prior to painting. After watching your video I have a better idea of the process. I would say they are not large cracks, maybe 1/16, maybe more. I think I would like to wait until all the work is done inside and out to wait for them to fix the cracks and then paint. What ya think? Thank you for your information! Appreciate all your great info!

Howdy Mary Ann, if the house is to be painted, all you need is quality caulking to fill the cracks then painting, unfortunately stucco has a tendency to hairline, If your home had a maintenance free color coat cementitious finish, these are almost impossible to repair, no damage to the integrity of the stucco, just tough to stop this hairlineing. Hey Tommy, on this home they had some really goofy and unprofessional siding's nailed on, I've seen some weird stuff but this was really amateurish, so much in fact that i was forced to explain it to the homeowners, The second siding was not nailed into the stud but mainly wherever they pounded a nail, they had no clue that the strength comes from the leg of the nail being embed in the stud, Anyway when we pulled the trim, I thought, damn do I take this job under these conditions or walk away? I informed the homeowners instead of running with my tail between my legs, and said we would do the best we could with what we had to work with. Hi Ernesto Gomez. I hear you brother, I sometimes recommend to folks that they would be better of with acrylics as these homes are on hills and are shifting, Most folks decline the advice as it raises the cost considerably as the primer and acrylics cost 3 to 4 times as much as cementitious finishes, plus we have to charge a bit more to apply these acrylics, because of all the necessary prep and covering and painting the entire home with the primer necessary for that acrylic stucco finish coat. Man I love your videos so awesome been committed to doing good work I've been using a stucco guy for many years recently his work in quality has declined. The surface of the existing house was a knock down texture and the new owner wanted to transform it back into a sand finish I suggested to him that we should sandblasted prior to doing any work and he told me that was necessary step unfortunately when he decided to proceed without supervision this guys there were a lot of areas were flashing was evident and on even trowel marks the most disturbing.. Was the raised hairline texture that wasn't cracked was risen from the bulk of the stucco work.... Great comments! Using lime or lower grades of cement will also help prevent cracking. The best way to prevent cracking is by over sizing your footings and making sure the building is correctly anchored to the earth Building regs here are min traditional 6inches & min is 24inches i always make footings overkill just to prevent cracking and subsidence!

Enjoyed your informative videos! Quick question for you... we're closing on a new build in Mesa, AZ tomorrow. We fully expected to see some cracks in our stucco as the house settles, however, one wall in particular of our 1-story home, about 80' long, has in excess of 60 mostly vertical cracks running through it. Is this normal? Does it speak to a bigger issue either with the stucco installation or something else wrong? TIA
@StuccoPlastering
@StuccoPlastering 7 жыл бұрын
Howdy Sprik, excellent questions, sometimes its caused by not gapping plywood or sheathing, how many times do the contractors actually space the sheets, Perhaps 2 out of ten in my area as we live in a cool climate. Yes, I do have video's where I show this spacing too. The reasoning behind this spacing is a bit interesting. I have seen and videoed a few homes which have horizontal cracking every 4 feet, There are about 20 solid reasons why horizontal cracking can and does occur. The main reason being, the studs and or sheathing was green when the framing took place. Now take 2 to 40 days or more with intense heat bearing down on a stucco wall for many hours per day, extreme heat will expand the wood, thus push on the stucco, voila cracking occurs. FYI, if a person lives in an area that does not get hot, expanding sheeting may not occur. I live in an area where we have only about 10 hot days per year that it reached 95 or above, However in some of the valleys "inland" where I sometimes work I have seen the horizontal cracking often as the sun is more intense especially if a home is on top of hill and facing directly toward afternoon heat. What is happening is the sun bakes the wall expanding the wood and often twisting the studs as the natural drying process occurs, thus the stucco cracks horizontally. Most stucco walls just crack somewhat vertically and at a slight angles at all doors and windows because of vibrations and or movement of opening and closing. Concrete like stucco can only flex a wee bit, as it's sort of like glass, the slightest stress can shatter glass. With stucco the slightest movement and or vibrations causes hairline cracks, this does not affect the integrity of the waterproofing membrane, however most folk panic as they have no clue why this happens. Thus any expanding of wood is sort of like Kryptonite to superman, not good. If you use a saw to cut the touching of the plywood this issue can be resolved or helped, this should be done to homes in hot areas that the temperature reaches well over a hundred degrees for months at a time. Plus the biggest factor of why concrete and or stucco walls hair lining is rain, depending on the amount of rain lifts homes and concrete because of natal ground expanding with water, when dryer condition occure homes and concrete settle, thus hair lining. There are about 20 other solid reason why stucco walls crack but these are the most common. I will send a couple videos about horizontal cracking. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aKSleYevYttsn8U kzbin.info/www/bejne/bZ7beHaMm7GNd7s

Not being contentious here... but as a 30 yr pool plasterer, I can tell you that cracks are caused by the mix being too wet. Most of the time you are using 3 components in masonry... Sand, Cement, Water. Those 3 products combined provide a certain amount of material (mud), let's say a cubic yard. When that dries, what is left is the sand and cement. It shrinks as the water evaporates. Sort of like a dry lake bed looks. So if you do not cover your work with wet burlap, or plastic... or even misters to keep it hydrated as it cures, it will crack, sometimes called "checking". Of course movement can/will add to this problem. In concrete, the water rises to the top and evaporates, that is why cracking in sidewalks etc is far less common. Thanks for your informative videos, you've educated and helped many DIYs and customers. =0)

And in NZ we are now using a lot of AAC panel which is generally 50mm thick. It has a cavity system behind it so can breath and let out moisture in bottom vents. The house is still insulated though behind all of this cladding. I've never seen hairline cracks in a house done this way even though we have earthquakes. Might be the modern mix which can expand and contract.

Evening Amir, my guess your old home was built better. Any home set on the earth is prone to cracking, take rain say for 5 days let alone an entire month for example, the earth will swell, this is perfectly normal, when the ground settles the house can and will move, you won't see or hear it, however a crack may appear. Why? Vibrations and or movement causes cracks in concrete, plaster, stucco and many other materials. Movement to stucco is like Kryptonite to Superman, sort of anyway as it does not weaken it but it can crack :-) Also high winds, heavy traffic, slamming door and window, moving heavy furniture causes vibration or movement and then Voila a hairline crack. These causes are just the tip of the iceberg. No worries, keep in mind that 99% of all cracks are petty and quite normal. Cheers, kirk giordano

@StuccoPlastering
@StuccoPlastering 8 жыл бұрын
Morning ZX dude, CRACKING, I can fill this page with reason why this has occurred, but none would include faulty workmanship or materials used, however this is a slight possibility. Instead they are all related to natural circumstances, theses cracks although not pretty are quite harmless. Weather, such as high winds or rain for just a week let alone a month will raise the ground thereby lifting this structure just a hair, stucco or concrete like glass will not flex much instead it cracks. Movement, such as all traffic and especially heavy garbage trucks will create ground movement, again the house will move thus, cracking occurs. The wood structure, The studs and the sheathing, when heated by the sun will swell, thus pressure on the stucco will cause this cracking, opening and closing door will create vibrations, again cracking. Natural settling foundations which happens to all homes, will also cause this cracking. I tell folks if they are going to install roof tiles, decks, sheetrock, or any other heavy beams, do it before the last coat of stucco is on. These common circumstances are just the tip of the iceberg in reasons why cracking occurs with stucco walls or concrete slabs. I have been in this trade for more than 30 years and to this day still guarantee my work, however there are some issues that are out of any applicators hands including the general contractors. Most folks do not like to hear this but movement and or vibrations will crack a stucco home, however the so called good news is, it's unsightly but this does not cause water intrusion. Best wishes, Kirk giordano

Hi Michael, excellent question, bonding agents are not necessary when you have a porous wall, what we do in this case is wet the wall and the two adhere by suction. (stucco and any porous wall) Other walls that are porous are cinderblocks, bricks and concrete, all these surfaces must be pressure wash clean enough to eat of as stucco does not adhere to dust, dirt, grime, etc. best wishes, Kirk giordano

You can have cracks inside too. My 42 year old house had a crack in the sheetrock by the door going into the bath in the master bedroom from settling. It was caused by a water leak that caused a major fail in leading to replacing the floor boards and still it was a small crack. Sheetrock doesn't crack very easy so if you have a crack in your sheetrock best be looking for a major foundation problem. Water can be so destructive and is why it is so important to keep it out.

how do you repair hairline cracks on the Santa Barbara Mission finish?
@StuccoPlastering
@StuccoPlastering 8 жыл бұрын
Howdy image29, Hairline finishes in a santa Barbara Smooth Mission Finish style color coat system, can't be repaired, as it's the basecoat coat has moved or lifted, this is very common, You either forget about the cracks knowing they are simply cosmetic and naturall , or you apply another coat of this same finish wall to wall, 9 times out of 10 these same cracks will return as among the hundreds of physical issues that is out of an applicators hands are mainly the rains. If it rains a day to 30 the ground can and will always life a house, then when drier conditions occur the house will settle. This natural occurrence can't be measured by the human eye, however it's real, therefor the settling will sometime tweak the walls a fracture or a great deal more, thus movement and vibrations, theses circumstances will always results with a hairline crack in the stucco basecoat, keep in mind the finish coat has little strength as it's primarily for looks and to achieve a maintenance free color finish. Most folks, who try and repair these hairline cracks make matters worse as caulking and or fog coating do nothing except enhance these cracks, especially when the home gets wet due to rains. My advice is to find yourself a coconut tree in the Bahamas or perhaps your own backyard, relax with your feet in warm sand or your hot tub while sipping margarita's with tiny umbrellas and realize this is nature, and there's nothing us mere mortals can do about it except, get an understanding of why this occurs, I believe once we know why, this wisdom, neutralizes any worries or nervousness that might be in our brains. We have a "web" of hairline cracks in the stucco coating on a foam-block building, in AZ, with no building movement. Whether or not the stucco was applied correctly, or not, isn't the issue; how to abrade (if necessary) seal, and re-paint is the question. It would take a life-time to attempt to calk all the cracks; I will calk the larger cracks, however. Otherwise, the building is literally spider-webbed. Have been told there ARE sealers, and paints, that might fill the smaller cracks, if thoroughly rolled on application. Any thoughts greatly appreciated!

Kirk & Jason Giordanos DIY plastering and stucco tips you, Kirk! I really appreciate your expertise. I did pressure-wash, with stripper-nozzle, which has removed some of the top-coat; assuming poorly adhered areas. The contractor originally painted with an elastomeric product, thou not Kelly-Moore. While I recognize the paint didn't "cause" the spider-webbing, it didn't seem to tolerate it well, either? We have some related paint adhesion issues (some blistering) so I suspect the paint-contractor cut corners. Several commercial painters I have consulted with are no-longer huge fans of Elastomeric paint in Arizona's harsh sun; two have instead recommending products such as Dunn-Edwards "FlexPrime" or "Ultra-Grip"; two-coats back-rolled, and "Ever-Shield" or equivalent as a top-coat? Having said that, I will take a hard look at the Kelly-Moore products, perhaps paint a few "test-areas" and see what transpires. Again, I sincerely thank you for your council!
@StuccoPlastering
@StuccoPlastering 9 жыл бұрын
sdslim9012 The Kelly Moore product I mentioned is a sealer, perhaps your area is not proper to apply a sealer? Do you know some of the reasons why homes in the heat crack? If not out of the 10 video’s I have on this issue, I will forward the link to 1 or more FYI, as maybe it’s out of your as well as the applicators hands. Many times this sort of cracking is caused by the heat of the sun.This heat can and does expand the studs and or shear wall causing this type of cracking as this wood dries out it twist and or expands without a gap being placed between the sheets of plywood it's even worse. If this is the case these actions never really stops, season after season, unfortunately.I am not a negative person, but sometimes knowing the true actions of a situation beats the frustration of wondering what the hell is going on all the time and why it can't be fixed. Thank you, again, Kirk! "Yes" a sealer coat was applied (and typically is here-bouts) on our building. I suspect, it was either not a good product, or was improperly applied (or both) prior to the building being painted. And, as the same likely holds true regards the paint top-coat. in addition to the spider-webbing, and blistering, there is some lime-streaks leaching through in areas. The building in question is grouted foam-block ("Rasta") construction, and the high summer temps could well be a factor; the hair-line cracks seem to follow the seams between blocks - at least in some areas. It's our current plan to abrade the existing paint (looking at options; soda-blasting, sponge-blasting, "spiral-nozzle" pressure-washing...) then re-seal, and repaint. I have begun looking at the Kelly-Moore products based upon your comments. Thank you very much for your insight!

Hey dude, if the headlining seems to follow the blocks weather cinder blocks are made of of cement based or styrofoam based mixed with portland, tells me that more than likely they did not apply a coat of cement plaster thick enough, or the building is settling. We just did a re-coat on a movie theater that was plastered 10 years ago the ground settled a foot and a half, giving the foundation a really ugly appearance. the weather in that area was in the 90s to 100,s often, settling occurs but is not seen as it's slow so most folks don't believe it to be a possibility. If you can't see it surely it can't be happening? Best wishes, kirk giordano plastering

I have read that small cracks in concrete heal automatically, through the process of autogenous healing. That process occurs when free lime in the cement binder is dissolved by the ingress of water and which is converted into limestone (calcium carbonate) on reaction with carbon dioxide in the air. I guess that larger cracks are fixed by autodial healing, where the home owner calls in the contractor to fix his "bad" work.

Howdy metz, eventually all stucco and or concrete can hairline, especially in the winter where many days of rain can and will lift a home, then when drier conditions occur the home settles, this movement cant be measured, but the hairlines cracks tell the story, plus there are about 20 other solid reasons why hairline cracks can occur. However, this possible hair lining in the stucco walls does not affect the integrity of the stucco or waterproof membrane one bit, some folks find it unsightly other never notice. This tendency for possible cracks due to movement still make stucco the best and most solid exterior sidings known to man, especially if one considers the added structural strength, R-value, soundproofing, durability, and a maintenance free finish that anyone can install on the exterior of their home. Trick question Kirk, what about the painted surface? Shouldn't weldcrete have been applied to that section since theoretically the color coat wont adhere well to that section since its non porous? Also, wouldn't weldcrete be needed on top of the caulking since this is not porous?

Howdy Paul O'Neill, perhaps, the house is on the hayward fault line so throughout the years it will continue to move. We took extra precautions on this one and went beyond code requirements, but foundation settling in some neighborhood and the building of most foundation are out of our control. It didn't help that someone installed two sidings ignorantly and the addition was not lag bolted to the home properly or that a two story home was built next to it after our stucco was completed, but such is life as a big time stucco dude. Kirk & Jason Giordano's DIY plastering and stucco network Well, it IS what it IS, right? I like your comment about the paper being intact. That is the true moisture drainage plane. The stucco is there as a rain screen and a UV screen. The paper is the part protecting from the moisture. I've seen all sorts of moisture damage under windows because window installers don't take the time to put flashing pans under the windows. Looks like this house will have limited life expectancy because better methods were not used. You can only do so much with the rain screen. It does not cure moisture issues.

Hello Paul O'Neill, you know your stucco barriers, however this home won't have limited life expectancy, it will last as long as all stucco homes, It will hairline in the future as the ground will alway move in this area, When we lathed it I used more Sikaflex Polyurethane Caulking with adhesive sealant around all the windows, doors, electric outlets, pipes and such, than any home this size in the past to prevent water from seeping in back of the two layers of paper. Here in California I have never seen a flashing pan under a window, I have seen and suggested flex wrap for all inset windows with the bottom lip loose for us to slide our new paper. The general contractors do use pans for all sliders or french doors in fact I have a few videos where these pans have been intstalled. Best wishes, Kirk & Jason Giordano's DIY plaster and stucco network

Decades Back I Was a Painter Working on a 3500 sq ft Carriage House. There was an Exterior Sided Wall Fastened Via Furring Strips on Concrete Block. Anyhow that Sided Wall was 80' with No Expansion Joint. When the Sun Hit that Side you Could Hear the Siding Pop as it Expanded. Here in Illinois Our Frost Line is 42". There's Quite a Bit of Frost Heaving. I Got Into Masonry Work Partly Because of the Permanance. The More I Work with Stone the More I Prefer it Over Brickwork. I've Done a Lot of Genuine Stucco Repairs. By No Means Am I an Expert. But it Still Looks Like That Stucco Shrank to My Stone Mason's Eye.. I'm Happy Doing Stonework that'll Be Around for Generations Here in Northern Illinois where the Ground Is "Stable" & We Only Have to Worry About Frost Heaving Buildings Freezing Solid 40"+ Down.

Hey Kirk: Everything you said about "hairline cracks" that are caused by building movement is true but you seemed to imply that was the TOTAL story on STUCCO CRACKS which is not the case. I have had stucco applied that was loaded with cracks in a month. Sometimes the cause IS due to the mixture that is making up the stucco, the application process, and/or the curing process. As with concrete, too much cement can cause the curing process to create too much heat and shrinkage that will lead to cracks. you mentioned "hydrating" the surface and waiting for a cure period. Not doing those things can lead to a surface that is full of cracks and that condition should be explained.
@StuccoPlastering
@StuccoPlastering 8 жыл бұрын
Evening Pappa Bob, I have included those realities in other videos as well as placing staples or furring nails in the field instead of the stud where the weight per square inch is also important, as placing stucco netting on backwards, using nails and or staples where the leg does not go into the stud at least 7/8 also creates cracking, wet studs with plywood butted together is another common problem especially in areas where the heat is severe as the studs as well as the shear wall will expand in the hot sun then shrink when it's cool causing all new stucco to expand and shrink with it, this usually creates the horizontal cracking that is not normal such as the vibration cracks that are quite typical and normal around doors and windows that shut or slam when opening and closing, Wind and especially a week let alone a month is possibly the biggest movement to any home as this creates ground swelling then settling which can't be measure by machine or the human eye, yet, after storms the new cracks with no dirt tell the story, foundations not poured properly or with weak concrete also concrete with a PSI strength under 2,500 PSI does not help either,sand mixed that is not rinsed free of salt, or certain sand not meant for structural strength hurts too, "would you believe dubai spends 17 Billion dollars annually on sand imported from Australia while Dubai is in a desert full of sand but not good for building," redwood trees with roots that appears close to the surface and are again horizont instead of going vertically downward have caused some damage to many homes which I have visited also. These are just the common sense sort of tip of the iceberg circumstances that cause hairline cracking and or structural cracks in stucco and or concrete, Things that make you go hmmmm. best wishes, and thanks for the tips, kirk giordano plastering

hello timmian85, I believe most folks feel cheated if they have a new application of stucco applied to their house and they get some sort of hairline cracks. Most folks do not knowing there are literally 20 to 30 very real reasons why cracking occurs naturally in every village, city, state, country and throughout the world, took me many years to understand this great truth. But just to be fair there is alway the chance the stucco contractor is incompetent and does have some unethical approaches to saving time and or money which can and will also compromise a stucco systems. Cheers. kirk Giordano
