Where to install Stucco expansion or control joints, with plastering both coats.
This is a complete lathing and plastering video in its entirety.
Add stucco expansion joints to the area where your home meets the new garage; this will slow down stucco cracking if installed at junctions where additions meet the existing house.
Stucco tips on lath, scratch brown-coat sand finishing expansion joints same day stuccos.
Next to the original and existing wall, the original crack next to the roofline went vertically. After adding the addition, that crack was left untreated or not caulked.
The most important part of this video is explaining that if your addition, walls, and roof meet are cracked, you should keep them filled with caulking.
Had the original small and harmless crack been caulked much sooner, rainwater would not have been allowed to enter and rot out some of the plywood sub-straight.
Then, these lovely folks would not have had to remove the stucco to chase the areas of dry rot, replace much of the wood siding studs, and put it all back together again.

IFYI, f you have the paper on, 3/4 expansions can be attached over the paper. However, if you have the stucco netting on, you can't use 3/4 anymore as the stucco would be too thick and out of plumb. With the stucco netting on, you are forced to now use 1/2 inch as the stucco netting adds a quarter inch.

Hahah i was wondering why you had that little trowel on your belt for this job lol. Great point. I’ve experienced the opposite. We were doing a soffit and this guy had a huge trowel. But he couldn’t not get it to stick… at one point I told our apprentice to pick up the mud off the ground and re mix and cement and give it back to him. Hahahaha thank you for posting sir!

Kirk I have an 18” x 18” for Dryvit .I What to a metal supply place and got a 1/4” sheet of 2’x2’ And cut it down . Weld a bolt on the bottom with an aluminum spool gun and just put a marshalltown handle on it.

Hi Martin, Depends, backer board is not water resistant, if its an exterior Barbecue or pizza oven no big deal, if it's a wall, someone screwed up as a waterproof membrane is necessary behind the board.

Hey Kirk, hope you're well. I didn't see a scratch coat before brown. I'm confused on that since I've seen where you do it and sometimes you don't. Also, when doing a scratch coat, do you have to wait for it to cure then just go over it with the brown coat just like that since there's no wire after scratch coat? 🤔

Howdy Aaron Wolf Dude, we use a lot of same day stucco's, these you do both coats in a day. Twice the cost for the materials but also twice as strong as traditional stucco. Thus adding the lines are not necessary as the stucco base coat is integrated.😉

Hi Kirk, what about 20Ga 'poultry wire' for an outdoor plaster fence? I want to do a fence like your video with the bee-keeper neighbor which was a 4x4 post frame so I figure the plaster will key just fine through the chicken wire, no? I plan to use cross-beams so it's supported every 3' square or so. Please let me know what you advise - thanks!

Howdy jesse, the only stucco wire for your use is Diamond mesh or what's called 3.4 mesh as the holes are tiny. The stucco won't adhere to any stucco netting as the holes are to large unless there is a backing. HD and lowes carries these flat sheets. I do have videos that show how his is done.🥳

Good morning, Gefilta; Rib Lath is for ceilings; can it be used for walls? Sure, it's just not advised as the stucco can't mushroom behind it. FYI, no primer is required for any caulking. Good afternoon Bruce, weld crete bonding agent takes about 20 minutes to dry you can apply right after it drys, the can says you can apply while it's still tacky. I usually wait as, I'm busy anyway.

All them years of doing stucco you really think that serrated darby is to make it breathe? It does that but its a scratch coat darby the darby scratches the wall for you. With todays modified mixes you have better bonding ability then they used to

And pay attention to details, thats hard to find these days especially here . We don't have any inspections on stucco or eifs or any water intrusion details. Good Morning, Jose; he wasn't; he was using a twelve or fourteen-inch trowel. 😏 The plastering trowel I was using to prove a point is termed a midget trowel, as it has benefits. There's no crime in using a small trowel, as I have seen and worked with a couple guys who outspread me with much smaller trowels than I prefer. The point I was trying to make was that no matter the trowel one chooses to use. Good afternoon Sean, we use a diamond mesh of ceilings only in our area.😉 I believe the stucco netting in this video is indeed much superior for walls than the 3.4 mesh or called Diamond mesh.
