Stucco finishing secrets, it’s only secret as even professional plasterers don’t know it can be done.
I’m talking about applying a finish coat that is more than an eighth inch thick and knowing how to stop that thickness from cracking or spider cracking like an egg.
For those who have no clue what “Spider Cracking is?” finish coats are supposed to only be a one-eighth inch thick, or they crack the big time.
If one applies it as thick as I did in this video, we open the applied finish with a sponge float, allowing the finish coat to breathe so that it does not spider crack when it does set.
Things that make you go, hmmm.
This video below at the end shows what I’m talking about spider cracking or checking.

This video explains stucco finishing and the secret dos and don’ts of stucco finishes.
Why do I call this knowledge a secret?
Few people understand finishing with stucco coats, including licensed stucco contractors, unless they have many years of using them and guaranteeing them for life. Few do.
Save yourself ten years of hands-on training and listen to what is important in stucco applications.
We’re showing something I don’t encourage folks to apply a color finish thicker than one-eighth of an inch to almost a quarter to a half-inch.
To add accelerators to stucco color coats, really takes some time in the trade.
But at the risk of sounding cocky, we are masters of accelerators whether in base coat or finishes.
Color coat finishes are engineered to be laid on only one-eighth inch thick.
Applying a color finish on this thick will cause the hairline to shatter and crack.
Thus we had no choice but to add accelerators.
