Plastering Interior walls before Painting.
Remove the interior buckling plaster and repair it with stucco.

Is it possible to plaster an interior wall with stucco after removing the loose plaster? Of course, it is.
Many folks ask me if you can use exterior stucco for interior walls?
The homeowner wanted a stronger wall than plaster, and we obliged him.
Howdy, guys and gals. In this video, Jason and I explain the simplest method for removing and repairing interior plaster.
In my opinion, this home was done with Structo-lite and a top coat of Lime plaster.
Yes, we could have also applied a Diamond base coat and returned with a Diamond as a topcoat.
Yes, we could apply a drywall board and then a drywall compound and do back-to-back coats in 2 hours.
Yes, we could have even used taping mud, which would take three days to finish.
However, I am showing folks how to do it with Portland cement plaster in this video.
Why? There is more than one way to skin a cat. I know every way that’s known to man.
Thus, I’m sharing some knowledge.
Can you use sand and cement plaster for the interior walls? Yes?
There are lots of ways to plaster a wall.
The moral of the video is that I can use almost any material with 20 different hawks or trowels and complete this. The owner wanted more strength; we gave him strength.
Typical interior Lime finishes over sheetrock.

Hi dismaldog, I worked for a couple years for a great fella named Sam Hoff who taught me a lot of the trade, then joined the union in the early 80s and worked with union shops such as Mc Dermitt and Sealy, Danny Smith plastering and a few others for several years until I applied for my own C-35 plastering license. I think I have been licensed for well over 20 years and had my share of learning this trade the hard way, sometimes! Best wishes, and have a good evening! Kirk Giordano Plastering

Good morning Gordon, one more thing about your comment, cement and stucco both have as their main ingredient Portland, the difference between the two are in stucco we use sand as our aggregate, however in cement concrete they used a wide variety of aggregates from small to large rocks. Good morning Gordon, here in the US, we have been using Portland and lime on timber lath for hundreds of years. I have many times also used structo-lite Basecoats plasters, imperial basecoats with diamond finishes, as well as every type of sheetrock compound known to man. There are many ways to complete any project. What I took off this wall was in fact Portland and lime. Thanks for watching and have a great day! Kirk Giordano plastering

We would use structolite or gypsolite on an old wood lathe wall like that. If you want, you can spike your scratch and brown coats with aluminum sulfate to set them up fast. I don't know if aluminum sulfate will work as an accelerator with portland or not... Never tried it.

If I understand correctly. the client wanted a cement plaster, you used a sponge float to expose the aggregate so it could breath. Its rough but had you troweled it it would be sealed and would crack like an egg.

Morning Anthony Romano, most portland based cement plaster will hairline if steel troweled, keep in mind there are also many based gypsum products that can also be used effectively, such as Structo-lit, 20 minute fast patch muds and such, where the issues of steel troweling will not cause this gypsum to hairline, I show many different products and their uses. cheers, kirk giordano plastering

Hi Kirk! Thanks for posting all these videos! I am a DIYer and going to replaster some walls in my home for the first time. I was wondering: 1. Could post a supply list for this project? I want to make sure I get everything I need in order to properly execute the project. 2. At the end of the video is this project complete? 3. If so, would I just prime over this and then paint? Thanks again for all your expertise!

Hi Erin Huerter, the material I showed in this video is not what I would recommend to someone with little training instead its much easier to use Wetspac's patching drywall compounds they sell these dry bags at Lowes and home depot, "you just add water and mixr" they set in either 20, 40, 60, 90, and so on depending on your speed or skill level and they can be sanded if you make a few mistakes, there are also other materials but the fast patch is the easiest. And yes you can prime and paint after the product cures. Best wishes, Kirk & Jason Giordano's DIY plastering network

Evening Eddy Adkins, I have heard this question before. out of site out of mind. Back in my union days those structo-lite bags weighed 80 pounds compared to the bags today. I just got into the habit of same day stuff and these compounds make this possible. I recall Structo-lite as being really sticky and a finish coat not possible until the next day. I do have a bag of Structo-lite in my garage with the accelerator but a project has not come up yet where I can try it. Cheers, Kirk giordano

@StuccoPlastering
@StuccoPlastering 10 жыл бұрын
Morning le proboscis from New Zealand, is this a trick question? yes, I could but the question is can you? If I were to do this I would fasten corners as to make them without the use of corner aid would take longer than to fasten these metal corners and the corners would not be as strong. Also to do this in a day you would have to be an expert with the accelerator's for the product you wish to apply. Best wishes, Kirk & Jason Giordano's DIY plaster and stucco network

@StuccoPlastering

Howdy Marat, it's doubtful you have this method or portland cement on your inside walls. No doubt you have structo-lite as the basecoat and a topcoat. It's almost impossible to tell the difference between the two except that Structo-lite is white in color and portland is grey. Of course, because your home is old and in Pittsburgh, you could also have lime mixed with sand, then the color of the base coat would be tan.🍾💃

Luminite is calcium aluminate and the stuff I was referring to is aluminum sulfate... both aluminum salts so I'd bet a dime to a dollar luminite would work with structolite. I buy the alum. sulfate at a gardening center. It's sold as a fertilizer. It comes in 1 lb. bags. It's great when you have a bunch of small patches or deep patches that require several filler coats. Doesn't take much... a few handfuls will set up a whole bucket of structo in about 20 minutes.

Thanks, you have to have the best plastering vids on utube; Yeah, just saw your vid on the fireplace. awesome!..It was structolite I used about 2 years ago..Used a steel 20" concrete trowel .Long edge is beveled up slightly , but the square corners I noticed are prone to cause ridges. Didn't know they made this rib lath. I used diamond metal lath in the past. ,but I stretched it as tight as I could get it from stud to stud before I stapled it. Didn't want any trampoline effect. Like the finishing trowel you use with the half moon ends.and might have to get one., What's the name of it again? I just pulled half a wall down this week; leak damaged drywall ,plenty of mold I don't want to see again. How soon after the brown coat goes on before you use the diamond finish? .......Thanks for sharing your extensive expertise...Amazing you can instruct while you work.....Ciao Per Adesso. Mikey

Kirk, I want to do exactly what your doing here on my 1910 era craftsman style home. For this wall you did here if I understand correctly you used three parts Sand to One part Portland Cement. Is that correct? I would like to run my plan by you, it's culled from your videos, and a lot of reading. Your opinion and guidance is very valuable. I can see me applying this to inner walls especially stairwell, bathroom and kitchen but with DIAMOND® finish. For the outer walls and ceiling I am thinking STRUCTO-LITE® for its insulating value with DIAMOND® for the finish. Here is my thinking for 3/4" average thickness required: Scratch coat - the first layer applied. Trowel flat but raked texture for bond. 1/4" to 3/8" Brown coat - the second layer. Build up to no more / less than 1/16" / 1/8" to finish level. Trowel flat and smooth but not glossy. Scrape lightly and brush clean before DIAMOND® finish coat. Finish coat - Just that, troweled and worked for a smooth finish. But first to give me some practice troweling with ceiling I can reach from the floor. I have a large room and entry area done in 5/8" drywall but not yet taped.. It was before discovering your excellent videos. I have done a fair amount of drywall taping and finish. I take pride in 'no sand' finish, I'm not fast but then again I'm working for myself. A friend laughed at me for using a short pool trowel like you until he saw the results. I hope to do well at this next level. For this I am thinking first fiberglass taped seams, a generous coating of Plaster-Weld®. Apply 1/4" base of STRUCTO-LITE®, finish with DIAMOND®. So the short question is, Is all this a sound plan? I like the look of the original plaster, not quite perfect with slight radius on the inside corners and outside edges, going for bullnose on some. I will be visiting your store soon, I have many tools but not all the ones needed for this work. Thank you for your time and attention, keep up the good work! PS: one suggestion for you and viewers. Use a 1 1/4" narrow air power stapler to reset the furring strips, fast and holds tight. B

Evening Uncle dude, this video is an alternate way for superior strength. I would advise structo-lite for your base and diamond for all the finish work. Peace, love with happiness to all. Kirk Giordano plastering tips-mixed with sound advice

Thanks again Kirk, what was the ratio, sand to cement, for this job,. I have to finish a concrete lintel over my patio doors. It's quite a smooth finish and I only have about 1/2 inch to play with so I'm thinking go straight to plaster ( no render ). How would you finish lintels ?

Evening Walter M, I think the most used especially in older times would be structo-lite base coat, allow to cure a day then come back with a veneer plaster, but this method also costs the most. In the video here i used what they originally had which was standard portland. A person can use many products and still get the job done, in fact they could have used sheetrock and taping mud too. Cheers. kirk giordano Plastering

Hey kirk ?,on a painted cement ceiling,its not leveled so we put structolite mixed with a cup of cement and 4 scoops of mud at what depth do you use a bonding agent,cause it was put on thick an the deeper areas spider crack
@StuccoPlastering
@StuccoPlastering 6 жыл бұрын
Good evening Larry, Portland will accelerate Structo-lite about 5 to 7 times the natural set time. I usually clean the wood strips as best as possible then apply a bonding agent to help remove any dust at one time I would suggest up to a half inch at a time let set then apply more on top of the last coat, when set. Hey Kirk , Mike here have a question regarding your interior Portland cement plaster system . I noticed that you dont use the scarifier (scratcher ) on your first coat as you do on your exterior system . I saw in the video where you did the interior ceiling with the rib lath and Eisenwald portalnd cement system with Adolfo that you went right over with a thin finish coat without scratching it , and i saw an exterior video where you did a ceiling with rib lath but you scratched the first coat . Wondering why the steps are not the same and must you scratch the first coat always wether interior or exterior ? Thanks
@StuccoPlastering
@StuccoPlastering 7 жыл бұрын
Good evening Michael, excellent question, If I apply a scratch indentation with a scarifier or what most folks call a scratcher it usually indicates I will do the next coat perhaps the next day or the first coat will dry or cure to fast for the mechanical bond the grip sufficiently. Thus the scratch marks imbeds the second coat extremely well. If I don't apply the scratch marks it means the first coat has adhered enough and it's ready for the second coat which will bond now with suction plus a good mechanical bond without having to use a scarifier tool. Confused? No wonder, as it takes years of plastering to understand when to scratch the first coat VS when you can apply the second coat immediately without the indentations in the first coat. Right, nice video, but........when pulling the old plaster off why throw it on the floor ? Why not put it straight into buckets or bag it. Throwing it on the floor means you have to shovel it up again (and risk ripping your floor protection). You are just making extra work unnecessarily.
