Student Pilot First Solo Flight | ATC Audio

First solo flight that was an epic experience with a few snags thrown in. Some of my landings could have been better. Follow my journey getting private pilot's license. On my practice flight in the pattern, there were reports of a bird strike and dead birds on the runway. This is the go-around experience you practice. But luckily it wasn't an issue, just something to think about in the back of my mind on short final. Learning to fly the Diamond DA40 is great! I spent one year learning the Piper PA28 which really helped me with my basics. Everyone said your first solo flight would be memorable and it was. Flying in South Florida has its advantages with beautiful weather and low terrain. I felt comfortable communicating with air traffic control but sometimes you stumble on your words. Laurie, I just found your channel today. I’m so impressed by you! You are the real deal. Not afraid to own your mistakes. Talking through everything can be very helpful. I’m glad your first solo was uneventful. On my first solo, minus a 225 pound CFI, my 150 shot up and my seat slid all the way back in the track. I couldn’t reach the rudder pedals or the throttle. I could just barely touch the yoke with my fingers. I pushed over to level off about 200 feet then I quickly moved my seat back up and locked it in. I climbed on out, did my three full stops. And called it a day. I had a total of 5 hours when I soloed. Had I not been pretty tall with a long reach, I might have died that day. But I went back out and flew the next day. That was almost 48 years ago. Still flying! Keep it up. Cheers!

Nice job Laurie. One suggestion. Every landing I saw you were quite low on the approach. In fact on your solo, you actually landed one before the numbers. Most people do shoot for the numbers. However, my instructor always taught me to stay a little high and shoot for 1,000 feet beyond the numbers if you have enough runway and can safely do so. The reason is that if you lost an engine on any of your approaches, you would never have made the runway. If you were shooting for 1,000 feet past the numbers you would have made the runway. Perhaps something to consider for you. Nice job.

I must say, that was very well done! The way you kept yourself together despite the nerves that kick in when a CFI leaves the plane was just great; all that hard work pays off. I did my solo at the beginning of the year and I was excited, nervous, and proud all in one, definitely something I will remember for the rest of my life. BTW, I flew a DA-40 yesterday and it’s an incredible machine, still need to familiarize myself with it, can’t wait for more.

Hell I’ve got 25000 hours, I was confused with all that radio chatter. Great call to get a progressive when things got weird. Great job and well handled. The flying is easy compared to the taxing. It’s hard to describe how soloing an aircraft changes your whole life. It teaches you confidence, strength, and somehow changes you forever. I noticed you talking to yourself more and more, with more confidence towards the end of the sortie. Correcting yourself methodically, gaining confidence. I used to tell my students that anytime they though the aircraft was perfect, it wouldn’t last long😂. The skill set of decision making you learn while flying is unique, but can carry over to every part of your life. Wish you the best luck in the future. And most importantly, congratulations!

If you want to do it you can. Don’t focus on hours and how fast everyone else is getting it done. Proficiency is the key. Not rushing through a skill that needs time and attention and safety.

Nice job Laurie. That first time alone in the air is something no one forgets. I was 14 years old and had 6 total hours flying a Cessna 172. I grew up around aircraft since my dad was a Cessna and Piper dealer. It was a sunny summer morning and my instructor Dick Flanagan took me out and we were doing touch and Go's. After the 3rd landing he hopped out and told me to go make 3 more...all I said was REALLY! Dick slammed the door and walked away. I went out and did my 3 landings and put the aircraft back in the hangar. I walked back to the office thinking well that wasn't too bad. I walked into the office and Dick handed me my Solo Certificate and said nice job Punk... when my dad got to the office a couple hours later he said so Dick kicked ya out of the Nest huh...hope ya didn't bounce that new airplane....anyway I'm 65 now and still remember it like it was yesterday...stay safe and have fun. Always remember Safety before Schedule. ❤✈❤

Laurie Lindsey a white Cattle Egret flew into the prop of the C150, from the right, just as I rotated. The instructor immediately came on the radio and told me to fly the aircraft. There were tall pines at the departure end so it was a good call.

Good luck on your solo. I used the regular GoPro sticky mount that was attached to the ceiling in the airplane. I have also used a ram mount on the window but I am careful not to put a mount where it could fall off and distract me.

I made a video about the emotions you experience after your solo. Your goal has to be stronger than your doubts but your confidence can’t outweigh your risks. Athletes practice visualization. Pilots can do the same before a flight. That helped me.

That's a big story. It has not always been easy. I use GoPro and a cable from NightFlight Cam. Sometimes the audio did not record, but I do not think it was the cable, I think it was the GoPro. The cable is designed to go into your headset, but best practice is not to put into the headset but another audio port. Don't put something between you and ATC. I may do a short video on this in the future. It's one of the questions I get often. Good luck on your journey.

The Diamond likes to fly off the ground but will build speed quickly.

The Diamond likes to fly and will lift off the runway easily. The stall horn goes off a little more in this aircraft. Rotation is 59. So you do have to manage it a little more on takeoff.

My landings improved when I boosted myself up more. I am 5' 4". The DA40 sits very low. I bought so many booster seats but they all smash down too much after sitting for a while. So I purchased Balance Pads from a Physical Therapy company. They are dense foam. I have one on the seat and one for the back. I cut out a notch so the stick would not bump it. Plus, since they are a rubbery foam, they don't slide like fabric.

I would say to go sit in the plane you are going to train in to see how comfortable you are. I like to see the cowling. You also have to be aware that your head is not too close to the ceiling either because of turbulence. I've come off my seat a few inches or so in rough air. Talk to your CFI to get the real deal and best situation for you. Also consider your rudder control and make sure you have correct adjustment there as well. These are just my personal preferences and I am not a CFI to give individual guidance, but let us know how it goes!

I always say "we". It's (at the very least) myself, the airplane, and the 'rock-in-my-pocket'.....so it's always "we".
