The reason why they're connected it's because their are how you perceive the confrontations and your surroundings, as the character, you can see how they change depending on how you behave, and how that changes your psyche, also does your perception as seen in the genocide route. Pacifist is the most wholesome one, where your kindness results in saving the world and as he says on the battle against asriel, it doesn't feel like a battle at all. Because you as the character, you just want to help, not to harm

Haha. Six of them. A child patient, dying eventually, for a human cannot live forever, nobody can. A child brave, fighting till their very end, but unable to pass what must be outlasted. A child valuing kindness, unable to do what was necessary. A child valuing perseverance, determined to do whatever necessary. A child filled with integrity following their own definition of right, uncaring for its implications. Undertale was an incredible internet phenomenon, it caused tens of millions of people to enter it's community, even those that didn't play it. In 2018 it had 3-4 millions players on steam, not counting how many people played it for free in the years when it was free and not on steam at all, and when it came out on consoles in the following years, and the fact it was made by ONE person, who also composed all the music, with the help of his small team of friends, which was a handful of people. Even tho it's aesthethic was not unique in the slightest, it boomed, it became so popular, i think in part it was for the music, and for how good the game actually is, the uniqueness is found in it's lore and storytelling, how the game interacts with you, it's easter eggs and a lot more. If you did not play it, i absolutely recommend doing so, not because of the joy and sadness you will probably feel playing it, but because of the surreal experience it provides the player, there is no other game i will ever compare to Undertale except Deltarune, which came after, beacause Undertale is simply its own thing.

22:50 Since you asked about where Toby got his sound effects, there's actually a ton of sources, some made by him, some are just default FL studio instruments, some even being obscure old Ronald McDonald commercial clips or heavily edited Spongebob lines, but the most prominent ones are definitely FFVII, Touhou, and the Mother series (mostly Earthbound, which is Mother 2). He uses instruments from those games' soundtracks a lot, and it has inspired his music writing as well with those games (especially the latter 2) being what got him interested in music in the first place, so even though he learned music by ear he was kinda' guided a bit by those games. Probably the biggest and most obvious example of this is in Finale at this little midsection at 11:02 , those background trumpets are from Touhou, they're the famed ZUNpets named after the developer and composer of and for Touhou, Jun'ya "ZUN" Ota. If you're curious to see just how much those games influence his work you might want to check out any of those games' OSTs in the future. Other Undertale themes which make heavy use of those games' soundfonts are Undertale OST #69 One True Love (FFVII), OST #24 Bonetrousle (Earthbound), OST #84 Amalgam (Earthbound), and OST #98 Battle Against a True Hero (Touhou, also ZUN's personal favorite in the soundtrack!).

I think my favorite part of "Your Best Nightmare" is the section starting at 15:15 . With the way the strings are played (plus the in-game context), it almost feels like _the song itself is laughing at you._ And then the synth that gets added over it on the repeat nearly sounds like your own voice trying to scream out over the music, but you just get drowned out.

Undertale (the song, not the game) is sad because during the part where it plays monsters appear, but don't fight you. Instead they tell you the tragic tale of the underground, and it IS sad, especially if you easily feel emphatic.

It's funny how you mention "It sounds so heartwarming. It sounds like a soul ticking. It sounds like a boss fight... etc. What just makes it all soo good, because that's exactly what happens in the game at the time. Most of the OST is about being happy, heartwarming, sourrounded by friendly creatures, and then you meet your friend, and then turns to your nightmare what you keep phasing in and out. As you said Toby Fox knows all about emotions. Not just the music speaks emotion, not just the creatures in it speaks about emotions, but also the base of the game mechanics is about dealing with emotions.

Most of these songs are “about” or somehow involved with one character in particular who has a few different sides to him. He’s tragic, friendly, heartwarming, earnest, but also cruel, terrifying, solipsistic, and deeply, deeply sad. The plot of the entire game pivots around him, the horrible circumstances of his existence, and his efforts to do anything about it.

Also, here is the context you sked for (in relatively the same order of reactions, and as spoiler free as possible. Though some context itself can be implicitly spoilery, but nothing specifically spoilery). The one thing that you need to know is that Undertale (and Deltarune as well) has different endings depending on your actions/what "route" you take in the game, and thusly some of these songs only play in certain endings: Once Upon A Time- Plays during the cutscene when you first boot up the game. It is the Deltarune equivalent of "The Legend". Fallen Down- Plays when your character "falls down" into the Underground (where the game takes place). Specifically, after a certain motherly character comes along. Fallen Down Reprise- Plays when the aforementioned motherly character comes along a second time. This can only play if you play a specific game route. His Theme- Plays during the final part of the final fight of the same game route as Fallen Down Reprised. Your Best Friend- Plays when a cute little flower welcomes you to the Underground after you "fall down". Finale and Your Best Nightmare- Your Best Nightmare actually comes immediately before Finale as they are both part of the same fight. Both of these only play during a specific game route, but said game route will always happen unless you go out of your way to do some specific things that lock you into one specific route. Undertale- This song plays later in the game when learning the backstory of an important group of characters. Reunited- Only plays close to the very end of the same game route as Fallen Down Reprised and His Theme . It is very self explanatory. Hopes and Dreams and Save The World- Plays during the final boss of the same game route as Fallen Down Reprised, Reunited, and His Theme Last Goodbye- Plays during the end credits of the same route as the songs I specifically mentioned (you know the ones).

You asked an interesting question in "Where he gets his soundbank?". 99% of Undertale's (and Deltarune's too) sounds are soundfonts. His main ones are SGM soundfont, THFont and Squidfont Orchestra. Also most of the sound in Undertale are detuned either a half step or a full step. Some, like the bass piano at the start of Finale, are 3 or 4 half step detuned. FL studio causes different sounds when detuning an instrument, and toby uses it to his advantage

I love how often you are right when you say something about the vibes of the songs. I am always fascinated how people can recognize what approximately happens in the game based on its music.

I love how at 4:21 you mention that the song sounds like an ambulance given the songs use in the game. I never thought of it like that before but it's very clever of Toby Fox to do that.

When you said "when it repeats, it changes"... You have no idea how much that phrase encapsulates the whole of Undertale, because there's 4 main paths you take in the game, and to experience it fully, you take all of them. When it repeats, it changes.

not only is the OST incredible, but it's perfectly tailored to the game it comes from. even without game knowledge you can understand the feelings and movements of the songs, but once you play and experience the situations they're used in? unbeatable

Finale has always been a sleeper fav of mine, especially combined with listening to it directly after Your Best Nightmare!

"Finale" would've hit a bit different if it came after "Your Best Nightmare". Notice that "Finale" has the same beat, particularly in the second portion, as "Your Best Nightmare".

06:50 - When I listen to this, to this waltz, I think of that classic merry-go-round where you sit on the horses and everything spins like a music box. And the action is set in the 1930s and you can just hear this waltz in the background. And everything is so slow and calm. Children dressed in old-fashioned clothes from the old days. Imagination is an amazing tool. And music drives it all nicely. 16:28 - And suddenly I find myself in Europe (actually, I've lived here all my life) and it's the 90s, I'm in a disco somewhere in Poland and the DJ goes crazy. The DJ later turned out to be a satanist. That's how I interpret the song.

Loved your analysis and enthusiasm for music! This soundtrack never fails to move me. I had a bad day but your voice combined with the tracks made me feel better 😊 Thank you! (On a completely unrelated note, this comparison struck me and now I can't unhear it: you sound very, very similar to the Mega-rich Light-bending guy from Disco Elysium! 😂)

Now what I think are the main theme missing from deltarune are: Smart race, It's pronunced rules, Chaos King, Don't forget, And from Undertale: Spear of justice, Heartache, CORE, Death by glamour Determination.

Figured I'd lay out a bit of a theme/leitmotif library for you, going track by track, for the ones you listened to here. It's mostly themes, none of these are actually short enough to warrant being a motif (which is defined as the shortest recognizable musical fragment, a call and response melody cannot be a motif and all of these are call and response; but who cares about using terms technically correctly?) these themes are the bare surface of what Undertale has under the hood. Once Upon A Time : introduces Main theme (A) Fallen Down Reprise: Main theme (A) used as melody in waltz section. His Theme: introduces his theme (B) Finale: should be placed after Your Best Nightmare, final culmination of Best Friend theme (C) Your Best Friend: introduces Best Friend theme (C) Your Best Nightmare: discovering horror and distress in Best Friend theme (C) Undertale: his theme (B) used as ostinato, main theme (A) used for melody Reunited: Main theme (A) Hopes and Dreams: Main theme (A) Best Friend theme (C) Save the World: Union of (A) and (B) Last Goodbye: Basically an encore for Save the World.

Hopes and Dreams/SAVE the World is my favorite set of tracks by far. Hopes and Dreams is the final boss of a full pacifist game and SAVE the World is both a phase 2 as well as just being a victory lap in and of itself.

Something i love you called out is you noticed the song “fallen down” is in “undertale” and “reunited” fallen down is a song that plays when you are in the intro cutscene with undertale and reunited play in the credits so my guess about why fallen down is in those two is to show the journey you’ve made from the start to the very end

You have already been told that some music is a continuation of the past. But it's also worth considering that the music was designed for games, and it tends to be cyclical. In some places, the music may suddenly stop or you just want it to continue - go to the beginning and start over. everything is calculated
