Studio One: How to write & change Automation on Sends, Buses, & FX channels

I’m a previous video, we went over the different automation modes inside of Studio One. These modes are common among all DAW’s.
Now we are going over how to add, edit, and modify automation on buses, sends and FX channels. We also go over a number of settings to check so you will see why I see on my screen.
You can take what is shown in this video and apply it to audio tracks as well!

How are you seeing your buses and FX as actual tracks? I only see them when I pull up all my faders- this has been the biggest issue for me because it doesn’t allow me to automate anything on buses and fx. Thank you!

Tick "Automatically create automation tracks for channels" in Settings>Advanced>Automation.

Im struggling to get good vocals.. that jump in the middle front...and trying to make it spacial with the effects with out make it muddy ... and still confused about using the fx on insert or sends on the buss. do you have a video about that? Tony P I prefer to put spacial effects on buses and send from my source channel. What you could do on the bus channels is the “Abbey Road Trick” where you put a high pass filter and low pass filter before your reverb/delay plugin, therefore reducing the frequencies going into the unit.

Hey Tim. If I move an vocal event vertically, how can I ensure that it didn’t nudge slightly to the right or left when I drop it in the new track?

I believe what you are looking for is a modifier. Drag while holding down option or alt.

If you just drag straight up or down, it should hold its left/right position on the time line. You could also make sure “snap” mode is enabled and cut at grid markers before you drag.

Thanks for the video! Why can't I see bus tracks on my edit screen? I can see them in the console view, but if I right click them, I can't find "show/hide automation:.Also, oddly, when i created a new bus while following the steps of clicking the automation icon n the edit window, I CAN see it, but not any other busses I already have setup (there are a LOT and they are all setup in my mix template already).

It depends on the automation field you are trying to alter. Something like "Mute" automation only have an "On" level and an "off" level. What are you automating?

Something like that should automatically be a variable parameter. Have you tried manually adding an automation point before the change and then dragging the "start" point?

You could, what i would suggest is making a new audio track that would record the output of the reverb return. Then when you hit record, the output of the reverb that you're manipulating in real time will be recorded as such!

I don't understand how you managed to make the bus and effect channels appear in the horizontal tracks.

There is a check box in the settings to enable viewing this. In your Preferences/options, go to Advanced, Automation, and check "Automatically create automation tracks for channels"

Protools is still the way to go. I use presonus 32 channel studio live but will not switch from protools to mix and edit. Studio is too confusing the way they seit it up. I can't simply split audio tracks with their multi tool as in protools or auromate fx and bus tracks. The buss and fx tracks are not in the edit windownis a big downfall for guys like me.

?? In multi tool, double click splits audio. Simplest way ever...PT is obsolete and overpriced piece of sh.t.

Hi, did you get this fixed? I've checked the boxes in settings and they still doesn't show. Neither does the mute automation function. I've raised a ticket wth Presonus but if you get this and have an answer then I'll take it!
