Thank you Andrew, this was a very helpful & informative video. I was trying to understand if the StudioLive 24R required additional hardware to control the inputs, but this video clarified that only software would be necessary to set gain, phantom power, etc.

Andrew, nice job on explaining the Universal Control system. I have the actual Studiolive S32 console. It was over my head, so I connected the iPad and downloaded the software. I find it a lot easier to use the iPad than trying to use the board to edit and produce music. I just started using the iPad and your video really helped me understand where everything is at and what purpose everything has to the final sound coming out of the FOH, and the monitors. It has been a real pain in my can. Lol! But, you helped me a lot. Thank you very much. .

Hello, one piece of information is incorrect. You cannot expand the channel count of your base unit by adding stage boxes. Hence, if you have a StudioLive32 Rack, purchase a NSB8.8 will not give you 8 additional channels (you cannot get 32+8 more channels). You might be able to do so from a console. If you own a studiolive console, you might be able to add more channels by using a stage box.

I really appreciate the work you put into this as well as your clear explanation. I'm thinking of upgrading my sub mixers in my studio which contains a lot of hardware synthesizers. If there's a way to network several of these devices together to run into my SSL Big Six, I think these may be the move. I will probably need at least three of them to accommodate all my gear.

The older Presonus stuff, like the firepod, you could daisy chain multiple units together, but I don't think there's any option to do that with the StudioLive units.

Thanks! This helped me I’ve started going to a new church where one of these is installed in a rack near the stage and they are running all of the house audio off of it through a windows touch screen computer in the sound booth. What no one there seems to know is how to “solo” so that you can isolate a Chanel in the headphones any suggestions? In the old days the board just had a headphone jack.
@AndrewBellous
@AndrewBellous 3 жыл бұрын
The StudioLive III Rack Mixers do have a headphone jack at the front, with a volume dial. The settings to control what goes to that jack are on the settings page on the first tab, but they don't have nearly as much control as the settings for the full mixer version. This is something that I'm investigating, and I hope to make a video on this subject when I can find a few minutes alone with the mixer.

I haven't done much with digital patching on this unit as of yet. I'll take a look and see if I can be of any help, but it's a busy week and I may not be able to get to it for a while. Excellent tutorial, thank you so much. I have two questions if you don’t mind? How do we pan an aux? Looks like pan only works for main mix. Another questions: I bought the 32R one. So if buy a PreSonus® NSB 16.8 Networked Stage Box does it mean I’ll have 48 channels and 24 aux out? Thank you

@AndrewBellous 10 ай бұрын
I believe the max channel count is 40. I haven't played around with a stage box, so I'm not sure. Generally Aux outputs are mono, not stereo. I haven't tried stereo linking aux channels, but if that is an option, then a control should appear for that, but I'm not familiar with that function myself.

Does the spacing between the MixOutputs 1/4" jacks on the StudioLive III 16/24/32R have enough room between them to allow the use of 1/4 to xlr converters such as the Neutrik NA3MP-UW? I'm not sure if there would be enough room. Depends on the exact specs of the device, but it's tight, there are converters available which use a 2-3 inch cable as part of the device, which would allow you to fit as many as you like.

Greetings Andrew, very grateful to you for this video, it has been very enriching. I have the following situation, in my church I want to receive the audio from the console via usb, to process it in the daw Studio One, since we transmit all the services live, but the last time we did it, it turns out that the boys (musicians) also get the audio with effects, and it is annoying to be listening in their in-ears the effects that are applied to the drums such as a compressor, the reverbs of the voices, and all those effects, in the transmission, everything is very good, but I need the analog signal to reach the boys as it enters the console. Is there a way to configure the Mix outputs in the Studio Live console in such a way that the signal that comes out of there is the analog? Thanks a lot.

I'd need to know more about your setup, but if you're using Aux outputs for monitors, then you should be able to do so. It depends on whether you are using the Internal Effects, or effects in the DAW. If you can find the Pre1/Pre2/Post setting, adjusting the output for the monitors to Pre1 should help :)

Great video - Thanks! I just purchased the 16R for my band. I do also own the hardware Series 3 (16) hardware mixer, which of course has all the bells and whistles! I'm a tad disappointed in that I am having problems reading files (multi-track recording) captured on my Series 3, in the 16R. I can read them fine on the Series 3, but they don't show as loadable files in the 16R Capture section. Any thoughts why? I would have assumed it uses the same logic. Would it simply be that they are multi-channel files and the 16R will only read (and play) stereo (2 channel). Any thoughts please? On another note - Do you know whether there is any way to move channel settings to another channel? I actually set up 15 channels, then our keyboard player decided to buy another wireless mic, so I now have him in channels 1, and 16! Would be great to move that 16 over to channel 2, but I suspect the only way is to move EVERYTHING over 1 by 1... so rename, and have to copy each gain, FAT channel setting manually... again, 1 by 1. Just in case you have any thoughts on this?! Again, great stuff, and I appreciate your coverage of this device (first gig with it tomorrow!.. I'm a little nervous!)

You need to direct each channel's output to the Main Bus that you want to hear, or create a different Bus to handle this audio, and then change the Main Bus output to one of the Virtual Channels. You should hear it then. I couldn't find this in documentation after a month of searching. Very frustrating.

How much time does it take for the mixer to boot? And after reboot - do I also have to start my PC and the Control Software to make it work? Or will it start with the last settings anyway?

It will start with the last settings before shut down. It takes 20-30 seconds to boot. Another 10 seconds to connect to software, depending on your wifi router and how fast it is.

I haven't tried the AVB connection. I have used the USB connection to record over a USB over CAT5 system, and it worked fine. The distance there was about 80'. I used a StarTech USB to CAT5 pair of boxes and ran it over Cat5e from the front of our sanctuary to the back.

I do both, depending on the circumstances. I don't see a noticeable delay. If you want to transfer audio to a DAW or multi-track recorder, then you need to connect via USB. If you only wish to control the unit, then a network connection is sufficient. You can connect both ways at the same time.

Hello! I really enjoyed your videos. But I can't seem to wrap my head around the Subs A-D. Where do the subs "go", as far as outputs of the 32R (which is the unit I have)? You assigned your inputs to Subs A and B. I get the concept of the "Mixes" panel on the far right, which sends different mixes to the outs on the rear of the unit, but I can't quite get the concept of the "Subs A-D" on the "input" panel in the upper left. Is this part of the "FlexMix" function? I hope my question makes sense. At any rate, love the videos! Thank you!

I don't really make use of subs. Essentially, you would assign a sub to an aux output. For people who are used to analog systems, I would guess they primarily included them for people used to that workflow. It is nice to be able to assign stuff with the click of a box.

Very good tutorial Andrew. I have a question, to see if you can help me. I want to buy the StudioLive 24R but I need to know if through the front headphone jack output I can hear any mix + CUE ?. can I listen to the headphones for example the 5/6 mix or would I have to connect a headphone amplifier to the 5/6 output and forget about the front output? another question I have. How many internal audio buses do you have? 24 or 32, that is, can I use 24 analog inputs and from 24 to 32 select USB digital inputs on the mixer? Thank you very much, great channel.
@AndrewBellous
@AndrewBellous 3 жыл бұрын
It's got 32 busses internally. There's a 16, 24 and 32. They all can handle 32 channels in, and by adding stageboxes or linking StudioLive mark III units together, any of them, even the 16 can process 32 channels. The innards are the same in terms of how much sound they can process on all the units. I'm still sorting out CUE mixes. There's an addendum to the manual specifically on this topic. I'm struggling to figure out how exactly they've set up the headphone jack on the front. On the full mixers, there's a whole section on how to setup the headphone jack, but thus far I'm not able to figure out where that is on Universal Control. You can use the Aux jacks for this, though. You can setup a full mix for any Aux jack, and so I do monitoring through the Aux jacks into headphone amplifiers.

@@AndrewBellous Thanks Andrew for your reply. I have been talking to technical support about if a flexmix can be heard on the front headphone jack on UC surface, and they tell me yes, specifically this: "Yes you can monitor 5/6 mix in the headphones, for example. Press Monitors Edit> Phones> Mix5/6 You should link the two mixes for stereo." But I don't have a 24R to see this. If it helps you and you find the key, I would appreciate it if you share it with us. In my case the drummer is next to the 24R where he launches the BackTracks and I'm trying to save a headphone amp (Aux FlexMixes) by sending his in-ear mix through the frontal headphones jack where he has volume control. I can see your 24R firmware is 2.3 and the official download are the 2.4 update. And your 3.3 UC (the last 3.4). Is possible that the update correct this? Thanks very much Andrew.

@AndrewBellous
@AndrewBellous 3 жыл бұрын
Gain is controlled either through Universal Control (app to control presonus StudioLive devices) or your DAW. Changing your gain settings in one place will automatically be reflected in the other, so you can have Presonus Studio One running while Universal Control runs at the same time. The inputs are all combo jacks, so you can plug in XLR or 1/4" (balanced or unbalanced) into any of the inputs. Gain is then handled in software, and there are all the usual controls you need to compensate for a variety of sources: Gain, Phase switch, etc. The latency is very good, and you don't need to use Universal Control. You can go directly from 24R-> DAW and if you launch Universal control, it shouldn't have any effect on latency. That software doesn't stand between the Physical Device and the DAW, but both the UC software and the DAW software are accessing the unit at the same time on the same level. It's like plugging in two USB keyboards. Each keyboard has the same access to the UI, but pressing left cursor on one while pressing right cursor on the other will end up with a neutral effect. There's a USB 2.0 port to connect to Mac or PC. No Dante built into this unit.
