I’m a Purist Bodyweight Calisthenics Professional. Before I was, I was a weight lifter in middle school, high school and college. I can easily refute most of your points against calisthenics but my favorite rebuttal of yours is when you said “ 16:00 “ My answer: If you think you need more weight for your push up then what a one arm push up can provide you (which is 50% of your bodyweight going through 1 arm) then you can still add more bodyweight beyond that to keep progressing. Don’t tell your audience that calisthenics can’t help you beyond your bodyweight when you haven’t told your audience how far you can actually go with their bodyweight. One arm pushups (or the traditional one arm horizontal push up you constantly show in this video) puts about 50% of your bodyweight through one arm and the remainder through your legs. If you reached that point, and you need more weight, simply progress to a decline one arm push up which puts about 75% of your bodyweight through that 1 arm. Then eventually progress to hand stand 1 arm pushups which puts 100% of your bodyweight through that 1 arm. In case you need numbers, I weigh about 200 pounds. I am progressing towards 1 arm hand stand pushups. When I get there, I will be pushing 200 pounds through 1 arm. Which means my total capacity is 400 pounds through my combined arms total. That’s really impressive in the fitness world. Very very few people have achieved that. So you see? If you’re complaining about 1 arm horizontal pushups being too easy and feeling like you “ran out of exercises” and “can’t progress further” it’s because you need to understand the concept of leverage which if brainstormed correctly eventually leads you to decline 1 arm pushups then to 1 arm handstand pushups as the king of pushup exercises. I don’t know anyone at the gym strong enough to do 1 arm handstand pushups so it should make you proud of yourself and motivate you if you strive towards that goal. Be proud of yourself.

Everyone should master the basic bodyweight movement(push up, inverted row, pull up, squat) first before moving heavy weight because with calisthenics you'll develope the relative strength, wherease weightlifting develops absolute strength but in comparison relative strengh is consider to be more important in many sports and everyday activities. Calisthenics can also provide some unique benefits such as balance,stability, coordination, flexibility, core strength and it can be done anywhere. If you good at calisthenics you likely to good at liftingweight too. later when you master the basic level you can add weight into these basic movement, which eventually become Weighted calisthenics and if you want to isolate more muscle mass add some isolate exercise or go to the gym, you'll gain two type of strength and build aesthetics body.
@erikmielke90086 ай бұрын
There is no need to do it first, both can be trained simultaneously, the benefits of lifting weights are the same as those you already mentioned for calisthenics, achieving absolute strength at the cost of relative strength implies eating with the intention of gaining weight and the best aesthetics are not achieved by using compounds of calisthenics and weight isolation but by using compound exercises for both modalities

Just for realism: If you want to start calisthenics, buy at least a "TRX". You do not need the overpriced original TRX, nowadays there are enough "knock off"-products around for about 20€ (or 20$) that are just fine (after all it is a very simple product). This way you have a nice tool you can attach to almost any door, you can put in a bag and use it everywhere (I mean you can take it with you while traveling, for example), you do not have to search for an outdoor calisthenics station. I mean, not everyone is living in a "everyday sunshine state" and outdoor training in an area with rainy seasons and/or snowy winters may be difficult. There is also the very nice thing, how you can start very easy with a TRX-like tool, because you can always change the angle to make it easier and progress to harder. I bought mine to have something to do just my push-ups on the floor and bodyweight rows with the "TRX" in supersets and man, this was like the beginning of a passion. :D

I believe calisthenics IS less stressful than a lot of weightlifting exercises. Deadlift for example, is really really stressful, a lot more than a whole session of trying to build a one handed pullup. Even when you do deadlift with light weight. Really stressful bodyweight exercises are rare. I prefer by far chaining jump squats, horse stance and cossack squat, than doing weighted squats. The only stressful bodyweight exercise is one arm pushup : unconfortable, engages the whole body, demands a lot of energy. Stressfulness is not difficulty. Calisthenics is definitely harder than weightlifting. Progression steps are higher. Fine tuning according to your level is harder, progress is harder to measure. Calisthenics exercises require INSANE amount of strength, while easier ones require perfect execution in order to have benefits.

@resilientfarmsanddesignstu17026 ай бұрын
You forgot to ask the most important questions: why are you training? What is your fitness goal and what do you mean by fitness? For instance, my fitness goal is “to be able to move and fight efficiently and effectively in any environment and terrain for as much of my life as possible.” Contrast that with some other people’s “fitness” goals that I have heard like “I want to look good in my Speedo this Summer at the beach”, or “I want to have big muscles” or even “I want to be strong”. When anyone exercises, they are training BOTH their muscles AND their mind to perform a skill. The skill that you perform flexing your muscle in isolation lifting a balanced engineered weight on a smooth level surface in an air-conditioned gym is much different than the skill that you need to have hill running, leaping, climbing, vaulting and scrambling over rock ledges, boulders, rocks, roots, branches, mud, dirt, etc. in highly uneven, variable forested terrain, mountain bike trail on the side of a mountain. The second takes way more mind muscle coordination than the first and is certainly far more useful and practical and thus arguably “fitter.” Now suppose you also do natural movement and animal flow exercises, calisthenics, martial arts, yoga, swimming, biking, skating and various outdoor sports like tennis, basketball, soccer, kayaking, etc. Each one training your mind muscle connection to move in a different way. Now compare your fitness level to that of a person who ONLY trains by lifting weights in a gym? Who is fitter? The weight lifter is ONLY fitter at lifting the weight in the gym because that is what they trained their muscles and mind to do! They are out of shape and unfit for ANYTHING else, because they didn’t do any fitness training in these other areas! Bottom line: If you want to get fit, you have to first ask yourself the key questions, what do I mean by fit, why do I want to get fit, and what do I want to be able to DO once I am fit?
@blackly_07266 ай бұрын
the only problem I see here is to say that calisthenics doesnt have as much exercises, like, wth, even with a normal low bar you can do a lot of row variations, and most gym exercises are also variations of the same exercise so you cant complain about them being variations. If you have the rings, you will be able of doing even more exercises. There are archer pushups, archer rows, archer dips, archer pullups, pelican curls, impossible dips, you can put weight, you can do it with one arm, you can increase the torque, do it declined, inclined, inverted, close grip, wide grip, false grip, and, at least for upper body there are not limitations, there are maltese cross, iron cross, planche, front lever, victorian cross, zanetti, caruso, butterfly, handstand presses, handstand 90 degree pushups, one arm handstand, planche press, touch front lever, one arm planche, one arm front lever, no dip muscle up, one arm muscle up, inverted cross, V-sit, L-sit, etc. Maybe there is even more calisthenics exercises than gym exercises. Being able to do proper full form calisthenics and gymnast exercises are amazing for strength and dexterity. The core strength, balance and time under tension you gain is great. I switched from lifting heavy to go back to more athletic training like calisthenics, plyometrics and gymnast style exercises. Both are great no matter what, but I’ve found I prefer the flexibility, type of strength and core stability you get from calisthenics in comparison.

Don’t forget cardio! Swimming and running/cycling are great for building endurance to help you master your mental, which has helped me have shorter rest periods at the gym and push harder (because I know how to control my breath better). There’s also the benefit of being out in nature. You acclimate to the weather conditions, get more fresh air, and are exposed to more allergens and whatnot, making your immune system stronger (in the long run). Also, you’re basically doing mini adventures every time you go out. It’s a great way to see what new places have opened up in your area to try going to later. And you find a lot of cool secret spots here and there. It’s the best!

Whether calisthenics or weighlifting, you'll come to a point where you mix both. In example, if you are into calisthenics, in some point you will add weight into it. And if you're into weightlifting and you're injured, you can use calisthenics as a recovery workout. I do both, so I can train with or without equipment.

I started calisthenics while i was 240 at 5'8''. now I am 200 I can do much more. It sure is discouraging at first but as you loose weight, you can do a lot more than people in your tier. As you get stronger, you get lighter. On top of that there are plenty of variation to get you started with. Only thing to watch out to listen your body and avoid injuries. Setbacks can be couple days to couple months
@BigBananaVT6 ай бұрын
Personally I prefer calisthenics as I can train anywhere without equipment, but also because if you can master control of your body you can do some pretty cool stuff like ring muscle ups, front/ back levers, planches, hanging upside down on bars by the tops of your feet, no leg pushups, balance beam stunts, human flag, etc. However, both are valid approaches to working out, it just depends on your goals and what you personally want to improve on. In the end, only you can make that decision for yourself, and as long as you're improving and pushing your limits thats what counts 💪🏻

@@mouhamehawel174 I know. I follow some of those guys, and even use some of their advice. Btw, FitnessFAQs has about 85kg, Daniel has 70kg, Dustin has less than 80kg also. Couldn't find any info on Beast. As I said, I am 110kg. And its undeniable the more you weight, the harder it is to perform even the simplest calisthenic exercises. Took me more than one year of training to do a simple pull up. Then comes my conclusion: for some people, weights are probably far better.
@caioserrao7806Ай бұрын
@@mouhamehawel174I don’t really think that his comment contradicts with yours necessarily. It’s definitely possible to practice calisthenics while still being heavyweight, but it is definetely harder, conpared to someone of smaller frame and with similar strength. Of course that doesn’t mean that it makes calisthenics ‘worse’ than weightlifting, it means only that is generally easier to attain progressive overload using barbells and other sorts of weight devices, than when it comes to calisthenics ( even considering the weighted calisthenics). Definetely possible, but still harder, which may be a criteria for one to decide whether or not it prefers one or another, considering its priorities ( hipertrophy, strength gain, resistance, etc ). I personally find much value in mixing both.

The way I see it, what's really important is free weights versus fixed ranges of motion and bilateral versus unilateral. I appreciate both calisthenics and weightlifting and I think they combine quite well, but with a few exceptions I don't like machines at all. They are quite uncomfortable, they do not develop stability and can even be dangerous. As for training unilaterally, I think it is better to prevent injuries and imbalance of forces. For the upper body it is easy to solve using dumbbells and unilaterally a cable machine, for the legs. It is more difficult not so much because of the unilateral deadlift but because it is necessary to do the pistol squat progression and it takes time because you have to develop mobility and stability even if you already have the strength

I’ve been thinking about calisthenics during a cut and weight training during a bulk. The theory being it will be easier to be more athletic and train supporting smaller muscles used during calisthenics when leaning down providing more definition. Then weight training during a bulk will not only promote size but strength as well. Then when entering the next cut you will be heavier and bulkier for your body to get used to handling again during calisthenics. Wash and repeat.

When I was working out with my older brother. He mentioned that the problem with exercise is that people use to much weight than needed. He pointed out that people always go for their Max when in reality that could destroy your body. He told me just lift what your comfortable with not lift above your Max. After he said that at the gym I started to think about it from a cardio, Calisthenics and Weightlifting POV. The more i thought about it the more I realized that he’s right because your goal is to build muscle comfortably not forcefully. So if you force it you can hurt yourself but lifting from an average weight pressures your body to build more muscles to get stronger preparing you for more workouts. Rather than destroying your muscles you should add more to your already existing muscles and going over your average destroys your muscles which stops your body from gaining more. I never really thought about that. The biggest interesting thing that Everyone who workouts knows that building muscles and losing body weight are completely different things. Cardio Workouts are made for losing weight and Lifting Workouts are made for gaining muscle and calisthenics just seems to be placed in the middle of them both. It’s interesting to know that Muscles weigh more than fat

Calisthenics reduce injury big time. In life or sports/combat you NEVER use one muscle/muscle group, so isolated training doesn’t help, contrary to that calisthenics forces you to use core to stabilize and glutes, quads, etc to stabilize the body before you even begin the exercise. Like the push up it’s a plank and a bench/chest press exercise all in one.

I'm an older person who was fit through about age 30, and am coming back at 50-55. Most calisthenic exercises have progressions to limit load, and I will fail before I hurt myself. The few that do not (pull-ups, dips) were best started off on a pull-up machine, but the lack of isolation prevents me from overstressing muscle groups and tearing them. I had to stop with pure weight lifting because of repeated torn bicep and back muscles, and the recovery time for this when you are older is much longer. Also, ring calisthenics offer a lot of work on lateral stabilization that doesn't come as quickly from regular weight training. I've noticed that lifting and moving bulky unbalanced loads for work (50-120lbs) is a lot easier since I started calisthenics with rings, even though I'm not "lifting as much" at the gym. As far as legs go- skateboarding or cycling (use the three highest gears for resistance, switch the front chainring to get going) lead to very well muscled legs if you don't like jumping on boxes and jump ropes. There are people with chicken legs who only lift as well (that is just ignoring leg day, everybody does it). I may go back to lifting some free weights for certain muscle groups, but I know that I have a habit of easily blowing past my tolerances so lifting has to be very limited for me.

I think getting a gym membership is best regardless of which u want to do. You'll benefit in the long run since u have the option to do both. Personally i like doing both. I remember when i could only get 1 pull up and dip in the beginning. But i did alot of upper body weight training, in combination with the assisted pull up machine (which is a big help if your gym has one). Now it's been about 8 months and i can do unassisted pull ups and dips for a full sets. Calisthenics definitely have their place, but i wouldn't choose just one or the other. Calisthenics offer really great compound exercises, and increase your relative strength. But if u want to focus on one particular muscle and get bigger biceps for example, u should do weighted isolation exercises. Doing both however will get u a well rounded physique and do wonders for your overall strength.

You should definitely do both. Calisthenics doesn't stand alone, though. Along with isometrics, plyometrics, agility training, and speed training. This gives you way more options for exercises and a more functional body. These can all be done without a gym as well. If I had to choose, I would rather be outside doing all the above than in a gym any day. I don't disagree about the building legs, though. If you want to build bigger legs, you need the weights. I couldn't ever get above 170lbs at 6 ft tall until I started training heavy on my legs. Now I sit around 195-200. No real wrong answer, just exercising is a great choice. At the end of the day, you have to figure out what your personal fitness goals are and what exercises benefit that the most.

Calisthenics is also much more helpful for longevity than weightlifting. The heaviest lifters , strongmen for example, don’t live very long. Throughout human evolution we have always had our own bodies to be able to move, and needed to move our own body weight to survive as a species…even when external stimulus wasn’t available. Someone who masters their own body weight will probably live longer than someone who is simply brute force strong in absolute weight movement. If you’re looking at it from a pure health point of view I’d go calisthenics. But cross training is probably best because there are many scenarios where absolute strength is more important than relative strength/bodyweight strength. I like to mix it up personally. It’s more fun and doesn’t get boring and you never feel like you have arrived but you simultaneously don’t get frustrated when you inevitably hit a wall because there is enough variety where you will see improvement in something over time
