Kind buy them all the time. In my journey which has been a hot minute I’ve found that I can stay with easy to find and budget friendly bottles. I don’t hunt or camp for anything. I like to walk in a local shop and get what I like and pay msrp for it.

I love the specificity of Erin’s tasting notes. “It’s like a green apple, but not a tart green apple. More like a green apple with exactly four brown spots that was in the left side of the bin that I bought on the way home from a Ryan Reynolds movie on a Tuesday is September.”

I’ve been experimenting blending different bottles. This is better with a 60/40 blend with the bourbon being the 60% and rye 40%. Now with OF it’s a 50% blend of the 1920-1910. Let them sit for a couple of months then try. The 1915 is better than the 1924. Give it a try.

I just mixed 2 separate decanters with 1915. I did one 50-50 and one 60-40, 60 being the 1920. Don't know if I can wait months tho😂 I was aiming for 2 weeks.

What would waiting for 2 months (or more) change? Doesn't make sense, unless they sit in a wooden container.. Mix for 5s, then sip.

Fun video showcasing two great bottles for killer cocktails. My wife (who’s more of a wine gal) and I conducted a side-by-side neat tasting as well. She described the OF Rye experience as “an evening bonfire burning in the distance as she walked through a field with tall grass." The OF 100 experience was akin to “walking past the funnel cake stand at the county fair.” So now when I mix drinks for her, I ask, “Would you like the bonfire or the fair?” We’re no pro tasters, but we know what we like! 🙂🥃

I tried a pour of the 100 Proof and all I got was acetone. The flavor was something I didn’t understand. I went to the store a bought the 1920 based on your reviews and love it. The 1910 is way better than the WR Double Oak. I might need to revisit this bottle.

I usually have both of these on my shelf. I just checked and I don't have the rye, will have to correct that. While I could drink either straight I generally use them as mixers. Both great values.

Both of these are absolutely the foundations of my home bar. The OF 100 rye has been my go-to for manhattans, but recently switched to JD bonded rye with bold Punt e Mes vermouth. Quite a boost in flavor and my new favorite. But OF rye and a softer vermouth makes a balanced manhattan and crowd favorite.

I get a ton of black licorice on the rye. Which I am not a fan of when it’s in spades. I don’t mind a hint, but it was strong for me. I drank about a third of the bottle to make sure and had to give it away. That said, I think it is a fantastic rye and value. It has a lot of flavor. I recommend it to people a lot.

Interesting. Black licorice is a note that I’m extremely averse to, and I definitely get it on some ryes, but not this one. I’ll have to revisit it with that note in mind!

I'd like to see a head to head of OF 100 Rye and Knob Creek 7 Rye. Those are my top two well pour ryes.

Butterscotch and Banana can be such similar notes for me. the OF 100 Rye does deceive as a bourbon. It is so good.

Not sure about that apple note, but I don't usually have OF100 Rye neat. The cherry note I do specifically recall but it also came across to me like cherry cola, but not like artificial cherry cola, more like a naturally made cherry cola. Funny thing is I'm usually not a fan of cherry cola but as OF100 Rye hit me neat, I actually really enjoyed it. And yes, absolutely agree, it's a great cocktail rye.

Thanks for reviewing these budget whiskies. I like the OF 100 even though it's basically an upgrade JD #7. Those flavors aren't bad at all! ..especially for the money. I haven't tried the Rye yet.. closest bottle is 143 miles from here on the ID/UT line. I think I will after hearing about here and somewhere else already. I'm like Erin, lean toward Ryes.

2:00 I like the Old Forester 100 bourbon - it's one of my standards. I've not had the rye - yet. 🙂 10:20 What are "baking spices?" If you're baking an apple pie you'll use different spices than if you're baking enchiladas. The term "baking spice" actually conveys *less* to my mind than the simple "spice," which all my life people have used to indicate the hot spices - paprika, black pepper, red pepper, like that.

I think baking spices gets used as a way to convey some mix of nutmeg, clove, and cinnamon. Never thought about it in terms of baking a non-dessert dish, at least in terms of whiskey as whiskey doesn’t usually convey notes of lasagna (but it might be pretty cool if one did 😆).

You should do a blind against Maker’s Mark and Larceny since both are wheat bourbons. If the proof where the same, I would say the cask strength Maker’s and Larceny Barrel Proof

Agreed, mostly. Ms Erin caused me to check out ryes. After trying Rittenhouse, Bulleit, and a few others I tried OF’s rye and discovered that Jackie Zykan (sp?) is my other new best friend. WAY better than its price, and always in my cabinet. The bourbon is great, too. Both are in rotation with the obvious WT competitors. Not incidentally, S&W is by far my favorite whiskey page!

That over ripe banana often reads like a nail polish remover to me. It’s a note that I read as a fault. There have been a few times that all I got was banana pancakes with maple syrup (in the case of the 1910) but 9 out of 10 times…

Yeah over ripe banana is nasty, I haven't had that note from Old Forester yet but I got it from Barton's 1792.

Nice content! I don’t have mixed drinks only neat so I really don’t buy many budget bottles that most mix with. My budget neat pours that I don’t go to very often would be 1792 sm batch, Knob Creek 9yr, and Elijah Craig sm batch. I get all of these at Sam’s for 25.00 bucks! Cheers!

@@Glock2201 I met the owner about a year ago, bought bottles, took him samples of things he never had, he gave me samples of things and we just hit it off so now I get really good prices on some bottles with little to no mark up:) I also go to the local BevMo on there delivery day and have scored some really nice bottles there.

I love OF 100, its one of my go to bottles, but Brown Forman is one of my favorite distillers. I havent tried rye whiskey yet, and this video has me thinking of buying the OF rye.

IMO Old Forester products are typically a great value. Thier 86 and 100 are great budget options and the 1910 and 1920 are better quality. The statesman is really good.

WT101 is definitely darker, richer, and has more oak influence and we do prefer it over this most days (unless we’re in that fruity bourbon mood).

The rye for sure. Nothing quite like it in the market for the money and amazing in cocktails. The bourbon is good but as long as we can get Early Times BiB it would be our first choice for value bourbon with this flavor profile.
