Stumping avocado trees is a technique farmers use to reduce the size of a tree, rejuvenate the health and productivity of an avocado tree. I try to reshape a tree so it will sprout new foliage on the remaining limbs in a wide spreading structure. In 3 years the new tree produces its first healthy crop of avocados. Hopefully the fruit is plentiful and large. This technique also provides new mulch on the ground from all the brush being chipped and left on the ground. Water is also reduced for a few years since the the size of the tree is also reduced. There are a couple downsides to this process. One is that weeds tend to grow because of all the sunlight now hitting the ground after the trees are stumped. The other downside is that no fruit is available for a couple years, also meaning no income for those 2 years. I hope you enjoy the video,thank you for watching.

fruit to full yield in two years, eliminates pests and disease, tree matter returned to the soil under the tree as mulch reducing the need to continuously water and tree matter returns nutrients to the soil.

Yes to all you said. The main reason is to reduce the size of the tree and hopefully more and larger fruit when they return to fruit production. These orchards I do typically produce very heavy crops until they crowd themselves. I’ve even done several blocks more than once. Thank you for watching my videos and a great comment.

Why do you stump these trees? How long again before they fruit?
@southcoastbrushcontrol9048
@southcoastbrushcontrol9048 2 жыл бұрын
That’s a great question. The main reason is they get to big, fruit production drops. Stumping them reduces their size and fruit size and quantity usually improve. You also save water for a couple years as they are smaller trees. It takes about 3 years for fruit to return in good quantities. Thank you for watching my videos. PS we will be starting another 1100 trees next week.

@southcoastbrushcontrol9048
@southcoastbrushcontrol9048 2 жыл бұрын
I didn’t plant them, but I believe they are about 20 years old. That particular block of trees was a little on the small side, they stumped them to try and improve the crop yield. It was a very light crop so they chose to stump it and start over.

What a small world..... I thought the area looked familiar. If I was to guess Possibly North of Goleta or Carpinteria. Keep up the good work. I’m a landscaper in the Santa Ynez valley. Occasionally we do travel to Hollister Ranch/SB/ Montecito area. I’ll keep you in mind if an Avocado job comes up. Our climate out here is a little too cold or Hot for Avocados unfortunately. 😩 We plant olive trees, prune and harvest in our area. 👍🏽

You are pretty much spot on for the area. I do tree trimming work from Hollister ranch to carpenteria and Santa Barbara to santa Ynez. I started farming about 40 years ago and got into trimming about 25 years ago. the brush chopping is going to be part of my retirement plan , it’s a little easier to drive a brush chopper than drag brush and climb trees. The tree work is getting harder to do every year.

@southcoastbrushcontrol9048
@southcoastbrushcontrol9048 2 жыл бұрын
We just wait for the new shoots to come out again, unless we are changing verities. Say from bacon to Hass. We usually do this to trees that have grown to large or crowded themselves to the point of fruit production declining.

@southcoastbrushcontrol9048
@southcoastbrushcontrol9048 Жыл бұрын
Thank you Moh, yes it will take 3 years to start growing new avocados fruit again. This block of trees produced huge crops of fruit for many years. It became a bit over crowded and the farmer wanted to add mulch to the soil and give the trees more room to grow. It was time to stump them and start over. If they didn’t stump them they trees slowly loose production and grow closer together. This saves water as the smaller trees don’t need much. Water in our area can be very expensive and due to drought sometimes not available. This technique helps in overcrowding as well as saving water during a drought. Thank you for watching and asking questions.

To a tree cutter this might be a video that he" dreams about " in my view watching these trees get butchered is a waist of viewing time ! Avocado Growers do stump their trees at times for the trees health. Probably when water is short !
@southcoastbrushcontrol9048
@southcoastbrushcontrol9048 Жыл бұрын
I’ve been farming avocados for more that 40 years. This practice of stumping was introduced to me and many others in our area about 25 years ago. Water is indeed one of the reasons for stumping. Over crowding is another. Also when they become so tall they can’t reach the fruit for picking. We have even tried stumping week trees to see if they will recover from the health issues that caused them to become week. This process works so well on the over crowding blocks we have done this twice on some of the first blocks we started on 20 years ago. These were blocks that typically produced 10,000-20,000 pounds of fruit to the acre, but over crowding reduced that to 1-2 thousand lbs. 3 years after stumping they were producing again. 5 years later we were beck to 15,000 pounds. Please let me know how well the avocados you farm are doing. I’d love to see and hear about them.
