I hope so too! I have had some bounce back in a few weeks and some a few months. I will probably mostly prune back to 10 feet in the late Fall in the future. But I do find stumping useful because the young trees close by now have more sun and to my surprise a lot of the old branches were sun burned for years from when the tree was young. I think now the tree will be better off and stronger. That is the hope.

Hi, I have a 5-6 yr old tree grown from pip. I do not have a garden and it is growing in a pot. The roots have filled the pot. Any suggestions, much appreciated. Raymond from South Africa 🇿🇦

Good question! Here more and more people are trying to grow them in containers. The good news is that the rootball doesn't get as big as some other types of trees. I would try to find bigger and larger containers like a barrel. Pruning back some will help too.

Gary Matsuoka at Laguna Hills nursery talks about a friend growing an avocado in a large container and getting fruit. It isn't easy but it seems to be possible.

Glad you enjoyed it. These days I try to prune annually more and more for less stress on the tree.

Next year it will grow probably flowers and until the following year fruit, avocados don't like much pruning.

I agree. Next year it will be a decent semi-dwarf and then fruit the following year. I plan on mostly pruning regularly like they do south of the border to keep them from 10 to 15 feet instead of stumping so I don't have to miss out on fruit production. But I will still use both methods depending on the situation. In my yard I can't let them get big and don't really want 50 foot trees so I have to prune.

The recent typhoon snapped of the trunk. I had to chainsaw 3 ft from the ground. That was 5 months ago. Its amazing how much my tree had recovered into a bush volkswagen size. That trunk was 9 inched dia., 5 years old.

Thanks Johnny! It's growing very quickly at this height. Over 6 inches of growth in just a few days!

About 10 years old.

Pinkertons are generally smaller for an avocado tree and are easy to manage.

I just lost my Reed Avocado tree this weekend because of a storm. Winds cut the main stem at around 3ft. It looks like a stump. Im hoping it regrows back in a few years. It was going to be the first year it produces fruit. Im devastated....

Sorry to hear that but it will bounce back. The good need is that it won't need that much water this year. They stump them commercially to save water some years. How tall is it now?

Did the tree come back?

I've stumped but not that much but found my fig and fuyu grow even more vigorous after the hard pruning, and grow back so they will get to where they were before the stump quickly

Thanks for the feedback! Yes, I have noticed that some trees like the crepe myrtle seem to be much more vigorous after pruning as if they enjoy it. I hear a growth hormone kicks in so the tree survives. Supposedly apples do this too. Then you have peaches in which I hear pruning shortens their fruiting years. But with avocados I don't think it is an issue. I hear it is how farmers used to do it but now in Mexico they will often just keep the Carmens to 10 feet every year after the harvest.

You will probably lose fruit production next year let me know so 2024 it should produce fruit again.
@xrsjohnm Жыл бұрын
error 2025 you should get fruit
@growyourownavocados Жыл бұрын
@xrsjohnm True that. It will probably just grow next year and perhaps have a small crop (if any). My temperatures are a lot like Riverside until November comes so we shall see. I will do a follow-up video if it has a crop.

I just posted a photo in the feed. Fun watching it bounce back.
