I’m so glad they are holding the parents responsible. What were they thinking buying this kid a gun when they knew that he was depressed?! I’m by no means anti-gun, but kids are not responsible enough and they’re not emotionally mature enough to be given firearms! Parents have been given a free pass in this country up until now. Parents these days don’t want anyone telling them how to raise their kids, so our society relies solely on the parents to make sure their kids can understand rules and consequences and can behave accordingly. It’s long past time that we start holding them 100% responsible for the actions of their children when they don’t. The actions of these parents turned, what could’ve just been, an depressed awkward kid who needed counseling into a killer. The responsibility for the deaths of those victims sits squarely on the shoulders of those parents.

@Jody Owen i don't know their laws either, but i find it difficult to believe setting an impossible bail is constitutionally legal. Also, i might pursue a judge only trial in their case. The jury will be tainted, as you mentioned. I expect a judge to be reasonable (but i admit, that isn't always the case)
@cameronno60392 жыл бұрын
@Jody Owen I'm mixed in the KR case. I think a charged, it never should have gone to trial. However, i think he was incorrectly charged. Legally, he was within his right to be there, but he was there as an agitator his actions leading up showed that (but those actions weren't allowed to be used). Regardless, as charged, i would have voted not guilty as well. Also, the Arbery murderers got exactly what they should have. I would argue Roddy was actually the most egregious one as he "angled his truck" at Ahmaud repeatedly. Still, these are jury trials we are discussing. Judge only trials may differ. Idk which is more likely, getting a single competent judge or getting a single open-minded juror.
@cameronno60392 жыл бұрын
@Jody Owen Arbery's murderers were over charged, but the felony murder charge was correct, as are the ensuing hate crime charges. Felony murder in GA is not the commonly discussed 1/2/3rd degrees. Further, intentionality can be derived instantaneously. They had no reason to do what they did and proved multiple times they were a threat to everyone with their vigilante provocation tactics. They committed felony assault and kidnapping. Regardless of intention, Arbery died. Death in the commission of a felony is the standard for felony murder in GA, regardless of intent. The neighbor was essential to the crime. He admitted multiple times to aiming his truck at Ahmaud and cornering him. If you are interested in the case, watch Legal Eagle discuss it, but also watch the actual trial video and review the written charges as they are written in that state. He was guilty of everything by the letter of the law. Again, I argue Ahmaud would be alive if not for Roddy. The number of charges is wrong though; I agree with that. 1 death shouldn't have 9 charges all with essentially life sentences. Still, they are guilty and one or three alone were sufficient. I also agree about KR as charged. However, he did set the events in place to commit murder. Obviously, he was also attacked at that time, so he got what he wanted in a legal loophole. The question needs to be better defined. When can you be the instigator and claim self-defense? I think that answer is very muddy.

The PARENTS should have taken him home and had him evaluated by medical staff. (Which would be a no-brainer were we to provide each other with universal healthcare.) Really think they should let each parent of each kid murdered or injured or even anyone that had a kid or relative they was worried about in the school spend 30 minutes with him individually with no penalty for whatever they decide to do. And if they didn't take care of him then anyone that wanted to got 30 minutes with him. Same penalty every child killer should face.

Technically, he hadn't done anything worthy of disciplinary action yet. If they suspended every student over a drawing, it would cause huge problems. Plus, legally it's not possible. Students have rights as well. I am playing the other side of the coin here, but what exactly had he done that warranted removal? He hadn't hurt another student YET, and a drawing doesn't infringe on the rights of other student's educational process. One of my former students murdered his mother, chopped her head, hands and feet off and dumped her torso off of a remote highway. The student had no friends, no one in my class wanted him in their group work assignments and no one wanted to next to him. But... he was new, we had not received his records yet, saying that I went to the counseling office twice over issues I thought needed attention and he refused to talk to the counselor. Technically, he had done nothing wrong, but he was strange and gave everyone the creeps. You can't remove a student for making the hair on the back of your neck stand up! Legally he had done nothing violating the school's code of conduct! I used to have my students journal everyday in class... sometimes they wrote some pretty dark stuff, sometimes I found out personal things about a student that made me cry but you can not judge a person for something they not yet done. Now, his parents should never have given him a gun, that is true... if they are making the claim he was depressed then they knew there was a problem! I have seen my fair share of bad behavior from students, I was an intervention teacher for part of my career... but none of those kids ever killed anybody. The State caused this by awarding custody almost exclusively to mother's often based on those mother's lies. The State really has created this problem. Sadly, like most other State ills, the media refuses to report the facts. In this particular case, the media reported that the parents turned themselves in. Now, they're reporting a different story. Too bad the media in this country is for sale. They have one job, report the facts. This stopped happening in the 90s, though it's been present since the 80s. Like we're stupid or something. I will admit, a mob mentality is present in this country, cultivated by paying sponsors, government, & media.

Meanwhile Ethan was visibly depressed for weeks and no teacher did anything. They just took a picture of his homework. What happened to him, the loss of two friends and depression, doesn’t justify what he did, but explains it all too well. However any sane person would not go to school and shoot his fellow classmates because he’s depressed. It was an impulsive decision because he only recieved the gun the night before, but makes me think he must have had a history of violence, as usually school shooting suspects plan days and weeks in advance. I think his parents knew Ethan had violent tendencies. The court filing stated he has a history of torturing animals and recently decapitated a baby bird and put its head in a jar to place in the school bathroom. Two witnesses who worked with the parents can vouch for Ethan’s animal abuse: one wrote she was always afraid of Ethan, said he was extremely violent and would hurt animals as a young child. Another wrote that Ethan was “highly intelligent” and knew there was something wrong with him. He showed her his demonic drawings, and told her he really enjoyed watching a deer suffer before dying. In my opinion, Ethan was not only violent but sadistic. He enjoyed the power and control he had over inflicting pain on living beings and watching them suffer in fear for their lives before they died and that’s what he intended to do in his murder plot. The way Ethan killed his last victim, Justin Shilling, really highlights this. Justin and his friend were hiding together in the bathroom stall when Ethan came in to re-load (after already gunning down students in the hallway, firing a total of 30 shots, half of which were close range). Ethan noticed he wasn’t the only in the bathroom so he kicked down the stall door, ordered Justin to get on his knees and shot him in the head. Then Ethan told the friend to get down next to Justin’s body, but he bolted out of the door and ran in time.

My neighbor kid growing up also had an obsession with guns and his parents let him make toy guns, and as kids we played "guns!" They used to take him hunting. He also liked to shoot at small animals in his yard, across the street from our elementary school, with a BB gun but the kids on the block put an end to that. When he was 15, and a Freshman, he was bullied. He brought it on himself by acting violent, and wearing army fatigues to public school. His Mom seemed a lot like a servant to me, and less like a mother and wife. He'd beat up his little brother, and his brother picked on the dog. So I always wondered if the Dad beat up the kids. Their Dad would just sit there after school/work, with his newspaper blocking his view, and just let the older son beat up his little brother. He also took to tormenting me by throwing my house keys on his garage roof and refused for hours to get them, or get me a ladder. He once jumped me in a closet and tried to take off my jeans, I was 11 or 12, but luckily they were tight and it was warm, so he couldn't get them off. Anyways, one day we were all playing Kick the Can, and he came over with a friend, acting all weird and disrupting the game. There's a lot more to the story, but we saw that something was wrong. After many hours, and many attempts by us kids to get his keys from him, and lock him out of his house 'til his parents got home, he went in the basement and shot himself in the head. His Dad said he would have done it anyways, and it wasn't the "guns fault." This was in the '80s, before school-shootings became a fad.

You're part of the problem and not the solution.

$11,000 behind in mortgage payments but spent money on a gun when they knew their child was depressed; somethings wrong with this picture. Also they had $4000 when found hiding? Things don't add up.

It seems like so many people feel sorry for Ethan and give excuses as to why he killed. I’ve seen some people say that he doesn’t belong in prison. Where is that same rhetoric for the 14 year old Hispanic kid who just killed 3 people where his own dad was the literal getaway driver. No one is giving any sympathies to him or bringing up his mental health issues or creating fake scenarios that he was being bullied to justify his homicidal rampage. The double standards are blatant when I scroll through the comments and the amount of people who demand that Hispanic kid needs the death penalty and branding him as evil, where as the comments surrounding Ethan, people are giving their upmost sympathies for him, some pushing for leniency and rehabilitation/treatment. Some saying that Ethan shouldn’t even be tried as an adult, including news articles. Others saying that his parents are more responsible than he is so he should get a lighter sentence. It’s insane that there are people out there who want Ethan to be released into society one day, like his crimes can be forgivable. So many people are treating Ethan like he robbed a convenience store. Both deliberately killed people, that kid killed 3 people and wounded 1, Ethan killed 4 people and wounded 7, and had 18 additional bullets left. Both need to be locked away for the rest of their lives.

Every School Admin should also be charged in this massacre for not searching the kid's bag and locker.

Most likely the school officials were afraid of being sued by the parents if they did a search or kicked him out.

I still want to point out that these monsters overshadowed a son who died a hero trying to fight the gunman. They taught their son to be a strong. I will never understand shooting up a school because you’re depressed.
