Other than Malcolm Marshall and Wasim Akram nobody could hoop the new ball both ways with no discernible change in action. Jimmy is easily amongst the top 5 fast bowlers ever for me purely for his longevity. He may not have the stats Dale Steyn does in the subcontinent but he has produced match and series defining spells. 2012 in India Dhoni called him the difference between the two sides and in the 2010 Ashes down under he led from the front.

When he's at his best he's as good as anyone there's been, Akram, McGrath etc, but there's a *big* difference between his best and his average.

You have no understanding at all of how his career and performances have evolved. He's just got better with age - and so his early performances have dragged on his career average. It's not that he has brilliant periods and poor periods. His last 400 wickets - noting that only 9 other fast bowlers in all cricket history have had more than that in their entire careers - have come at 22.7 apiece. Of which 154 away wickets have come at 25.7. [PS you mention Akram. His 414 wickets came at 23.6 apiece. So Jimmy is definitely on par]
