The first lesson I ever learned attending a division 1 school was that, this is no longer for fun anymore. Everything you do from then on will affect your adult life forever and not too many people are built for that believe it or not. Billy Owens stated just as much when interviewed by the #sentinel a few years ago about why his career didn’t turn out like many thought it should as one of, if not the best player to ever come out the state of Pennsylvania. He was so good in high school he never lost a state playoff game and won 4 straight state championships. He was equally tremendous individually in his college days, starting every game and increasing his output every year until his numbers looked video game like his junior and final season. Kevin Durant walked up to Billy Owens, standing on the side as his daughter waited for an autograph and told Owens he studied him on film more than any other player and that he was an inspiration. That had two have felt beautiful to a guy many consider a bust and I’m thankful he was able to get that flower from another all time great. He was expected to become the next magic Johnson and felt levels short. What happened? Here’s what stunted Billy Owens’ Growth

Yeah, a minuscule slip can mean a world of difference. If we’re comparing Billy with Magic then it’s no wonder the comparison was far fetched. Greats are greats because they do everything they have to to be great. I remember Ralph Lawler who was being interviewed and saying the greats like Magic spent summers mastering something they perceived a deficient. Magic partied sure but you can’t deny the work ethic and Magic himself always said if I don’t have time, I’ll make time. Peace.

Billy Owen's had alot of old school playground bigs with his style of play in the late 80s and early 90s. Another awesome vid. I think it was Sport magazine that had him on the cover as being the next best thing. Golden State was never going to get past the Lakers at that time and I remember them rolling the dice on that trade. Felt so sorry for Richmond as there was such great chemistry with TMC. I think Sacramento had a decent year or two with Richmond and Brian Grant (was it?). Anyway, as mentioned before, great vid/mini documentary. @@pmiahky Paul, actually remember that Illini team. Always thought Lou Henson’s team was underrated. ( One of two teams that I thought did not get enough credit when mentioning powerhouse college teams. The other being an Alabama team just a few years later that featured both Latrell Spreewell and Robert Horry ) Yes, you lost to a Syracuse team that not only had billy Owens, but Derek Coleman and PG Sherman Douglas as well. Might have been coached by Jim Boeheim, if I’m not mistaken. I’m sure you also remember Douglas went on to play in the NBA with the nets and the clippers. I was in my early teens at this time and I do remember thinking Derek Coleman was gonna be the best power forward ever. Instead, he turned into a basket case. Coincidentally, there’s even one of these videos on him as well. During that particular time, both the Midwest and the east produced a lot of good NBA talent.
@pmiahky
@pmiahky 2 жыл бұрын
@@richierich5694 Boeheim has been there since the 80s so yes he coached those guys. Derrick Coleman still was a ROY and had a pretty solid career. Just didn’t put the work in when he had legitimate HOF talent. Barkley and Karl Marlone have gone on record to say how tough it was to deal with Coleman. Regarding SU/Illini. That game was 89. We had a ton of talent and a loaded frontcourt but no real PG. Perimeter shooting was suspect too. Sherman D left the year before. Illini were a great team indeed and Henson a terrific coach.

basketball is a game, but in order to succeed at the top levels, you need that pro mindset. You need to be 100% aware of what the business is and the choices you have to make. Unluckily, you can't afford being naive. You need to take things seriously from the start. If you don't, you'll probably never succeed at high levels - that's what happened to Owens, and to several other prospects

I played HS basketball in PA during his career and he was known as the states boogie man of basketball lol. Dropping 50 pt games in the state tournament like it was nothing.

6:50 I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Sonics and Blazers fan. Japanese-American. So, I HATED the Warriors, because they KILLED the Sonics and Blazers. But, after the Mitch Richmond trade, NBA on TNT was right: It wasn't the end of Run TMC. It became "Tim-MARCIULIONIS-Chris," since Sarunas started to really burst onto the scene.

The Magic Johnson comparison was unfair. His game was not the same. Like you mentioned he was a power forward. He would have had more success as a versatile power forward. Great video.
