That is true to an extent but the real saying is the LOVE of money is the root of all evil (meaning prioritizing money and profit over people and life). Money is required for happiness but it should be viewed as a tool that should be used for people (yourself and others) not as the end all and be all of everything (not to hoard it considering the only reason money has power is because people recognize the value of it). It is people that give money power. The value of money can go up and down afterall.
