Breaking in the barrel on your gun is like only going 20 miles per hour for the first 100 miles and changing your oil twice when you get a new car. Years ago our department purchased us two new sniper rifles. They told us then not to worry about breaking in the barrels. So we did the break in with one and not the other just to see. It made zero difference. Also we only cleaned the barrel every 300 rounds and then we would foul the barrel to make sure it stayed the same on our cold bore shot....
@ShastaBean3 жыл бұрын
Made zero difference...does that mean they both shot .2645 MOA, or both shot 9.245 MOA, or both were able to hit the side of the mountain they were pointed at?
@mztd9124 ай бұрын
@@ShastaBean what a dumb question. You think he just made this up? lol. Is this the first time you've ever heard of two rifles shooting virtually the same despite one being broken in? Look around, this has been done before and proven many times that breaking in a barrel is a waste of time.
@ShastaBean4 ай бұрын
@@mztd912 seems it's true what they say: "ask a stupid question"...get a similarly stupid answer. OP said themselves they cleaned both every 300 rds, yet one of the supposed benefits has to do with just that aspect - where break-in can allow for longer period between foulings without losing accuracy as quickly or as much. Both would need to be shot until measurable decrease in accuracy due to fouling, and compare those results. Not simply always clean at some chosen number. And it's a sample-size of 1 anecdotal claim...free of any actual measurements or data...other than "made zero difference". Someone who repeats tests over & over and meticulously records data to compare can realistically make a claim about those particular barrels. Can you point to such tests, that you claim have been done before and proves anything? Even Yeager himself spends the video tripping over himself to call it a myth, with qualifiers to concede it kinda sorta maybe does actually matter...and says precision shooters loading their own benefit...but not something most shooters will discern.

I guess I must have been raised right, nobody in my family ever even mentioned barrel break in. I was taught about guns by my oldest brother Harry, who was in the USMC during Vietnam, and my father and other brothers were sportsmen, so I had lots of opinions, ideas and instruction from them all when it came to firearms. All the advice was good it turns out. The first time anybody ever mentioned such a thing to me I was in my late 20's and I just replied with "I just shoot the damn thing. It works or it doesn't. I'll clean it when I get home, thanks."

Totally agree In my experience a barrel will either shoot well or not. They tend to gain some precision with use then they gradually loose it over time which is a factor based on number of rounds and cartridge amount of wear and throat erosion. You can maintain some precision by hanging the bullet out more and more as the throat erodes or sometimes increasing velocity can prolong barrel precision life.

Allow me to explain the nature of the break in process. It’s like seasoning your cast iron skillet, so your food don’t stick, see ? You shoot a round, then goop the bore full of slop,wipe it out & so on. You are seasoning your bore with super special anti fouling juice. Impregnating the little microscopic pores & holes, imperfections & such, with a magical elixir that copper can’t stick to very good. It makes the copper not slough off the bullet as much, cuz the bore is nice & slippery. Thus getting more shots between copper fouling & making it easier to get out when you do clean it. Thus ultimately resulting in getting one extra box & 17/25ths, of ammo stuffed through your barrel before it’s completely shot out. That’s why I do it. & cuz 13 out of 72 top shooters in the world do it.
@WornoutRNPARAMEDIC4 жыл бұрын

I never really listened, and also coincidentally never had any problems. Thanks for clarifying what I already assumed.
@dannywhite3254 жыл бұрын
I have two ARs with the same barrel from the same manufacturer...the first one I did the whole "break in" and it is a tackdriver...built my next AR a year later and just ripped a few magazines down range...guess what, it's a tackdriver as well...from a secure bench rest, both guns will shoot 1" groups at 100yards...outside of the bench rest, they open up slightly, but only because the gun is definitely more accurate that the shooter...lol
@ShastaBean3 жыл бұрын
A precision shooter would be sending the gun in for repairs or replacing parts...like the barrel...if shooting 1" @ 100 yards. For them, a tack-driver is .15 - .3. An AR with 16" barrel and long-range precision rifle with 27" are two different activities, in similar way that shooting a pistol and shooting a rifle is. Some will try to work their AR to be as much like a LRP rifle as they can, but anyone serious about it is going to use a bolt action...and also, they are going to break-in the barrel because of how it affects the copper fouling equilibrium curve, and get accuracy for a longer duration in between copper fouling removals. Even the type of break-in process they choose will affect that curve, depending on how often they do cleanings is a factor they use to determine which method to use. So breaking it in, and not breaking it in and then going to the range and checking for a difference isn't the reason it's done. Groups would need to be carefully tracked over the course of every outing, and at some point, the barrel that's broken in should maintain the tighter groups than the one that wasn't. Most people aren't in this category, so the video is correct for most people that are blasting an AR at body sized targets at 20 yards (or 8" steel @ 100)...and for that, 1" is plenty fine - esp given the size of most red-dots.

Pretty much sums it up. Barrel break in on a precision rifle barrel is intended to remove burs or machining imperfections in the chamber. For ARs just shoot. If you have a high end bolt action precision rifle with a nice barrel (Krieger, proof, hawk hill, bartlein, etc) Id break it in per barrel makers instructions. James Yeager not entirely. Seasoning a barrel is when you fowl it to a certain round count where it groups better than a freshly cleaned/ oiled barrel. It maintains this accuracy until it’s overly fowled. Entirely true for 22LR firearms using wax coated bullets or copper washed. Swapping back and forth between the two will give you false reported accuracy unless you run the same ammo type of round for about 5 shots and then check accuracy after those 5. Try it, I tell no lies. It’s an easy demo.
