As a coffeeshop employee, I believe this Two Cents video. Every morning we see the same people who order $15 worth of things for breakfast for one person, a man who spends $60 for his office, and then they’ll come back for lunch and order another $20. It’s insane. I tend to eat our expired food because I can’t afford it. I’ve never understood how people eat out all the time.
@djhbomb29885 жыл бұрын
I think Kevin’s perception is partially skewed here. He said himself that he eats breakfast, lunch and dinner at home and eats out occasionally for socializing & spending time with his wife. So yes. He basically lives what they are saying. I think there are many more people that eat out as often as the 2 cents video depicts than he thinks.

Yeah I only made 30k at full time while living at home and I ordered lunch every day which added up to about $60 a week not including going out with friends or family. That was about $3,120 a year. Adding in extra food expenses maybe $4,000 a year. Those numbers are much easier to handle when you make $75k like in the video, but I think two cents is targeted at a younger demographic that makes around what I make, not wealthier more mature adults. Looking back I would have saved that $240 a month. $240 a month on eating out is a lot when you only make $2,000 a month. The fastest way to build wealth all depends on your current income and spending habits imo.

Two Cents is a great channel to watch. Finally, they just want people to be more mindful of their spending. I think we all want that. I agree. Kevin is assuming what "normal" is or that everyone else has the same spending habits as him. There's a reason why Credit Cards are targetting people who eat out a lot. They brought it up at the beginning of the video. Americans are spending way more on eating out than before. The "Just because everyone else is doing it" point wasn't meant to be literal. But when all your friends are asking you to go out to eat, guess what, you're gonna dine out more. Their point was that it's normalized to dine out more. @laurasosa8595 жыл бұрын
As other people pointed out, I also think you missed the idea... Instead of seeing the bigger picture of how Two Cents was relating spending TOO much money on restaurant food over a long period of time (years or your whole life), you focused on how eating out in turn helps you get more work done or spending time with friends/date nights. That's not related to the argument of saving money. You could easily invite friends over and have home cooked meals and also plan out your day ahead and do your errands with half the cost and the money saved can go towards other important things, which is what they were trying to convey. I personally found Two Cents' video extremely real. I used to have a full time job and about 4/5 times of the week would order Uber Eats for breakfast, lunch and sometimes dinner if I worked a night shift. The amount of money I spent on outside food without realizing was astronomical, but I always thought of it as, "oh whatever, ill make it all back." and that to me is a slippery slope mentality when youre spending like $250 a month on outside food and youre caught in a constant cycle of needless spending. Its been a year since I last had a reliable paying job and I now only eat out about 2-3 a month all because I resulted to just cooking at home and meal prepping. I spend maybe $70-80 a month on groceries, and with that money I saved I contributed to my roth, ETFs, Wealthfront savings, even investing it into my future business. Its not that spending money on eating out makes people poor as a blanket statement, but its definitely something people (especially in the US) dont really take into account, and blindly spend thousands a year on this matter. As you mentioned in the description, you ARE a millennial millionaire, so possibly for you, no matter how much you eat out, the cost pays itself back fairly quickly and its nominal. For people in the middle class/ lower class, Two Cents is really just trying to make us be more smart with our money and realize that small food expenses DO add up and can affect our lives in different ways, but if we learn to face it and make changes, it will benefit us in the present and future.

I think so too. I´d go as far as to say that they give basic advice whilst he gives pro advice ;). Most americans/ people around the world go and eat out every other night just because they feel lazy or pressured to do so without realizing how much they actually spend. But going out is expensive. You are literally paying someone to be productive making your meal, whilst you spend the time to wait and chat a bit. Doing it every once in a while is fine, but otherwise its just a waste of money and sure potentially a lot of money that could be used elsewhere. Sure there are good reasons to go out and you might be able to safe some time, but to be honest most people are just lazy and end up spending even more time.

This is also why they fly on private jets that cost hundreds of thousands and sometimes millions a year to operate. Not everyone can be a rich person though and most rich people were very frugal when they started. Lifestyle inflation is also a legitimate problem that a ton of people mess up. Their points here are totally legit (besides the rewards crap at the grocery store point, you should get your groceries delivered). I watched both videos and I still agree with the message Two Cents was trying to say. They weren't saying that eating out was bad or that it would make you poor(directly). They said that eating out more than you should can spend money that should've been invested into things like retirement via 401k and real estate(thus making you poorer in the long run). If you are able to cut your spending down a little bit you can be able to afford your down payment on your first home, payments on for a rent, etc. The reason why this video was created is because of the fact that many people these days are starting to cook less at home and just order food in or they go out to eat. Many people are bad at budgeting(not taught in school) as well so it's easy to see how food cost can get out of control, especially if you make a decent wage. The goal of the video was to cook more food at home and invest the saved money on their future(paying off student loans, car loans, investing into real estate, etc.)

The main expense in my budget before I actually cared about my finances was eating out. By paying attention to that category, I save at least $1000 a month. While it didn't make me poor, it surely didn't make me rich either. Pbs does have a valid point. They may have exaggerated a bit but nonetheless, valid points.

I tend to agree with eating out being a waste of money though. I’m addicted to eat out food and it costs a fortune. Plus eat out food is horrible for you and you’ll defo be at the dr’s more than if you are more healthy food from home. That being said, eating out “occasionally” is fine. Just keep it in the budget.

Avoiding the simple pleasures of life, like eating out, will not make you rich, it will actually make you poorer because you are operating from a poor perspective. I am all for saving money, but I am also all for enjoying life to the fullest. It is important to find a balance by being okay with spending money on the things you do enjoy.

I used to eat out / get delivery at least 4 days a week but then I started realizing how much I was spending on food every week. I now eat out 1 day a week max and cook all my meals at home for the other 6. Not only have a saved a TON of money, I'm actually happier with the quality of the meals I've been eating. There's no, "I can't believe I just spent 30 dollars on this meal: it's not even that good, and gone already." That being said, my eating habits weren't the only thing I changed to improve my financial situation, which I guess is kinda the point of this video.

*Edit #2: Expect a response video explaining tomorrow.* I read every single comment and I *strongly* believe there is a misunderstanding here that I might have to clarify in another video. I did not say Two Cents was stupid for thinking the cumulative costs of eating out are bad. In fact, I said that I agreed with them in that fact at 8:45 -- except I take it a *step further* and show how always eating out *IS BAD.* This makes me wonder if people leaving nasty comments actually watched the content, despite them saying they did. Further, I offer a *different perspective* -- which is what I do on this channel: If you want to build wealth, eating out is not *the only reason* you're poor. Edit 1: Sometimes I wonder if people just read the title (which I admit is aggressive), then just look for something nasty to say.

10:13 "That's called LIVING, that's called LIFE, that gives you PURPOSE!" ❤ *THANK* *YOU!* I agree with you, Kevin! That's Julia and her husband Philip and while they are adorable and kind hearted folks, I feel PBS created "2 Cents" for people who: 1. Don't have much money 2. Struggle with money 3. Live paycheck to paycheck One of their 1st videos was about 'How Cars Keep You Poor' and suggests you should ride Uber/Lyft or public transportation which made me think of Kevin O'Leary. 💖 Again, Philip and Julia are beautiful people but they are reading a script written for a channel aimed at viewers who are in need of financial support- not for investors, the business-minded or financially comfortable adults.
@lemontea0005 жыл бұрын
What’s wrong with riding transportation if you can if it’s much cheaper than owning a car? 2 Cents have a broad audience far more than Kevin imo. I’ve seen people living paycheck to paycheck and still invested in market. Being a working people plus saving money or being investor are not mutually exclusive. I think you and Kevin missed this crucial point. The video seems very polarized and categorized just because someone is doing differently. At the end of the day, not everything in life are based of a ‘return of investment’. Like how do you calculate, quality of life? Many people can learn a lot from that 2 cents video. I’ll go as far as to say this video was disservice to viewers out there. Could potentially send a dangerous message for those who aren’t that capable.

@@lemontea000 : I rode public transportation for YEARS before I bought my 1st car. Nothing is wrong with public transportation, however, after purchasing my vehicle (which was a pre-owned, little Toyota) it was so convenient to get to work, the grocery store, and get things done without having to stand outside and wait for a bus every day. Yes, I had to pay for car insurance and purchase gasoline twice a month but the feeling of getting things done in such a convenient and efficient way worked out for me much better than when I relied on the bus. Example: It took me 1.5 hours to get to college on the bus, 20 minutes by car. I would get home at 7:00pm by bus, 5:30 / 5:40 by car depending on traffic. I'm in a better place in life, both personally and financially. I'm grateful for my vehicle (now I drive a Kia Optima). I have money, a comfortable life, and my future is set. No worries 🧡

*Spending less money on going out to restaurants and bars is sound financial advice for lower income people* Don't really see why that is "stupid" *I Hate to make the following presumption but* It seems that perspective you give in this video is that of someone who interacts with poor people with little to no frequency(maybe you interact with middle class people who think their poor because of bad money management), or the perspective of someone who has never been poor or that of someone who hasn't been poor in many years and has forgotten what it's like a bit. I haven't the time to fully dive into this but I'll say this: Many of the paupers i know/encounter would take at least 2 to 4 years to increase their income/earning potential in any meaningful lasting way; so during that somewhat arbitrarily assigned 2 to 4 Period lowering expenditures such as going out to eat and bars is sound advice for low income Individuals. E.g if you make $2,000 a month and spend $300 a month on food (as I've seen frequently, give or take $100) That's 15% of their income. Even after increasing their income they often have significant outstanding liabilities and they increase their expenditures equal to or greater than their rate of Income increase. This is because an increase income doesn't equal an increase in financial education, (side note:and as your income increases one may have greater access to loans.) I make this point to say a lot of the financial KZbinrs (especially the younger ones) often say variations of "focus on increasing your income", which is sound advice but often down play (to varying degrees) the importance of lowering expenses as a percentage of income. I have a medium sized, albeit not random in a pure statistically sense, sample of individuals I've heard talk about their financial situation, and it appears to me many people have a spending problem more than an income problem. *Giving them more income is like trying to fix a leaking pimp by putting more water in the pipe.* So that brief, albeit incomplete, summary is my general thoughts on the matter. 💪
