The Isle of Bute has been named the best place to live in Scotland.
It tops a list of seven Scottish locations chosen by the annual Best Places to Live guide.
Judges assessed a range of factors, including schools, transport, culture and the health of the high street. Polly Bartlett reports.

My wife is from Greenock, and while staying at Wemyss Bay, we visited for a day in 2003, it was a beautiful island. Would love to go back.

I damn near laughed my head off at this place being named best place in Scotland. Lived there for a decade, including my teenage years. Maybe it's improved a lot now, but back then it was bloody awful. Like a lot of such places on the west coast, Rothesay was a run-down, worn out old seaside town to which the tourists had long since stopped coming - old B&B's, a glut of chippies, seedy amusement arcades with half the machines not working, remnants of crazy golf, the derelict bingo hall boarded up in 1976, the roller disco still stuck in the 70's etc. Plus the usual small-town gossip. I couldn't wait to get away!

Absolutely, Russell street is a must see! Enjoy some fake diazepam with your fish and chips on the seafront. See all the wonderful social housing we have to offer where 80% of the tenants have their rent paid by the government, why be a junkie in port Glasgow or Greenock when you could be a junkie in a much nicer house down here? Got kids? No problem, there is a 4 bedroom, everything paid for house waiting for you 👍🏻 Just a 5 minute walk to the chemist and booze shop.

You certainly are entitled to your opinion, I think you are being quite harsh. I was born in Rothesay and I have so many wonderful memories growing up there in the mid fifties. I've been in British Columbia for 55 years and I try to get back to Scotland each year. Without question there are social issues on the Island but I would venture to say no worse than any other community similar in size. I can honestly say in all the years that I have returned for a visit I have never experienced the slightest thing negative. The only real difference is that the trees are a bit bigger. We lived on Roslin Crescent, behind our home was a bit of the farmer's field, the the golf course and wonderful, exciting places for wee guys like me to find adventures. Indeed it was a busy place back then especially during the " Glasgow fair fortnight " but it was a safe place for wee lads and lassies. I sure miss it as I'm unable to travel now but I have nothing but happy memories that surround " My Island " ,,,,
