I have some long feedback lol: After disappointment with the industry and becoming obsessed with making the perfect hiking pants, I now own five sewing machines and some hard-won knowledge. The Fjallraven are probably the best made, in terms of construction but Europeans tend to use poly-cotton blend fabrics and especially in summer the new U.S. Army NyCo Extreme nylon-cotton blend is better. You lose a little stretch though. Speaking of humid and summer, I'm a big believer in hiking commando, and there are a few improvements (like button fly, softer seam finishing with bias tape and possibly fall-front flys) I'm working on for better freeballing comfort since I'm pretty anti-underwear even not hiking. I know a lot of American guys have issues with that since I think uncircumcisd guys are more comfortable with freedom and a lot of us unlucky cut guys just can't go commando or have to adapt a little. It's worth adapting because a single quick-dry layer is much better in humid places especially in summer. Another peeve of mine is cargo pockets not truly having enough capacity so that when full it pulls the ease (slack) out of the fabric and makes the leg tight. Gussets are important, too and slim fit is a mistake in the legs. You probably just should've bought a kilt in scotland lol. I know some Fjallravens are vented but front and leg venting is better like UF Pro put on some of their designs.

I appreciate the insights! Regarding slim fit items, I usually size up to counter tight pants. In very humid/hot environments I can see the case for commando, I wonder how chafing would be (guess it depends on weight and pant tightness). One day I’ll join the ranks of the kilts and things be swinging. I haven’t looked into US army NyCo yet.

@@corbincore Cool. Sizing up makes all of the other dimensions wrong though and flaring the legs adds four more seams to pants :( so I"m just anti-slim leg. I should've said that NyCO Extreme is made for the Army by the Cordura company that's part of DuPont and anyone can buy the fabric. UF Pro uses it also now. It has a longer break-in to become soft but it's ridiculously durable and great in hot weather. Chafing is a body-mechanics thing - yeah, body weight is probably most important but that's also one of the purposes of body hair - our ancestors did without underwear for about 200,000 years - breech cloth was a pretty different thing and underwear as most people understand it wasn't invented until the 1930s (which is about the same time circumcision started becoming popular in the U.S.; maybe that's not a coincidence). I think PurpleRain and Outdoor Research both made good hiking kilts out of tech fabrics instead of old-school heavy wool but I"m not sure if they still do.
