Su-25T Training: Easy Landing

The default Su-25T Easy Landing training mission with additional voiceover to point out a few things that might trip up those new to the aircraft or systems. Weather is clear with a light breeze.

:) That would be a problem. Rule number one for any pilot is to fly the airplane. Sometimes that means not slavishly following the instructor's directions... :)

Thank you for this video. Despite my plane's navigation system automatically detected that I've reached a waypoint and switched to the next one, the mission/game sometimes just wouldn't think that I've reached said waypoint, so all of the rest of the instruction wouldn't pop up even if I kept on following the navigation system and put the plane down on the runway.

I also had this problem. As noted in other comments, you have to fly very close to the waypoint for it to register. I think if you miss the way point it kind of glitches out the nav and it takes you away from the waypoint. I used Auto Pilot (A) to reach waypoint 2 precisely and it finally registered.

@@pastusj05 I looked it up and and find out that the script gate is actually pretty small and a tad lower/higher? than the waypoint. The game is awesome but these in game tutorials aren't very well done. Also when you're doing bombing tutorials, don't release the bombs when you're pushing the nose down. I found out the hard way.

When I fly this mission, my hud circle and adi are sending me mixed signals. Also, even when I just put it on auto pilot, it seems to send me in the wrong direction indefinitely as the distance to waypoint only grows. Edit: i tried it again, but this time ignored the flight path and just followed the yellow hsi needle. He stopped talking to me for some reason when I got to waypoint 2; all the way until I crashed trying to land without his help. Then he told me I failed the mission in a much more condescending voice than usual. I think he’s mad at me.

When I pass through waypoint 2, my navigation systems automatically direct me to the next waypoint, but the next tutorial message never cycles. I've seen people say that the tutorial gate is actually much smaller than the waypoint, but I just can't seem to hit it, even with autopilot. I'm sure with enough practice I can land on my own, so it's more of an annoyance than anything, but would greatly appreciate any suggestions. Update: it appears the tutorial gate is actually around 1700-1900 meters, instead of the suggested 1920. Once I figured that out I haven't had much trouble hitting it

i know its from 2017, BUT in game i lost it at waypoint 2, just went on without text help and land that "grach" on first try.... little bit rough landing, but from full stop to immediatly take off... apprentice luck :D

Haha you're a legend mate. I have been trying this for ages and I don't think I have been getting the altitude. The FD keeps sending me straight on past the waypoint and keeps taking me away from it. It doesnt shown to turn around or anything. Do you have to manually change the waypoint when you reach number 2? So smooth...... Thanks for the video mate.

Just reflew this to make sure the waypoint switches automatically and it does. You need to pass very close to it, however, (within 0.1 km, I believe) in order for it to switch automatically. But if you're a bit off, just select the next WP manually.

MayDay! I think I've got an issue with this and other missions... I'm quite novice, so it truly is human error many times, but I've got a few things I'd like to ask you guys: One of them: On this mission, after passing waypoint 2, and heading to waypoint 3, there is a moment where the distance begins to increase again, around 8,3km from the waypoint. The circle is still centered, the altimeter shows right... I simply don't know what's wrong! A weirder one: on the learning mission of how to use the GSh-20, the mission plays at 7:00 and it's pitch black there... Okay, no problem, follow the damn circle and you are safe right? NO! I started to get a ground proximity warning after passing through some "doors" and lastly I saw a damn door crossing the ground! I tried to pass though the ground and the upper side of the door, but it was waaay too narrow... I crashed. Then I flew again, ignoring the doors, and after passing the one I had crashed, I saw more doors even closer to the ground. As if the doors were taken from a different map, and weren't placed correctly. Please HELP!! thanks in advance...

I wonder if there's some problem with your installation. Just re-flew that Easy Landing mission and saw nothing like you're describing. Also flew the internal cannon training mission this morning to check that. The only gate which is half buried is the final gate at the targets. All others are well above ground, although there is one low one that Matt warns about at the top of a lesser ridge line. So something seems to be wrong on your end. Have you run a repair recently? That might help.

Don't know what mods you might be running but sometimes that sort of thing can create issues too. As far as repairing your installation is concerned: forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=114030 . This gives you instructions on using DCS Updater to do a variety of things. Repair is one of them.

Good video! Does the SU-25T have anti-skid? I sometimes "fish tail" after landing and I just have to counteract with rudder control. I couldn't find an anti-skid function in the controls list. Thanks!

No anti-skid that I’m aware of. You definitely want to slow down before braking, especially if the runway is wet. And you never press and hold the brakes, if you need to brake early. Rather use quick on/off application-a kind of poor man’s anti-skid.

I can't maintain the plane in the glideslope. It's either I lose altitude too quickly even with the recommended speed of 290 or I'm too fast with the approach and crash

If the former, increase your throttle a bit. If the latter, use the stick to lift your nose. Landing is all about keeping the throttle and stick (the stick adjusts your AoA--angle of attack) in balance. In short, you control your altitude with the throttle and your speed with the stick. It ends up being a bit more involved than that because as you adjust one, you'll probably also have to adjust the other. But that's it in a nutshell.

@@Flankertrainingcom I watched many of your videos, the way you land the plane in one piece even when you approached the runway at an angle within a short distance while still fast, amazes me. I know it's a learning curve. I'm considering changing my x52 pro entirely. I recently replaced the string and it seems there is no fluidity in my pitch and roll. It's either too much or too little.

Do you mean that it feels like the aircraft is being pushed slightly left of the runway as you’re flying down the glideslope? If that’s the case, that’s because there’s a slight crosswind in the mission moving across the runway from right to left. The easiest way to handle it is to maintain a slight bank to the right to counter it until just before touchdown. Another way to handle it is to use a bit of right rudder. Given the conditions, either will work.

That's because it is not a game. It is a fully fledged flight simulator. I would think that if you are proficient with the DCS version of the SU-25, you would very quickly (like in a few weeks) be able to take off and at least to some degree fly the real thing. You would of course need to learn to manage and overcome to the purely physical phenomena like nausia, spatial desorientation, anxiety and sensory overload.

@Federal Bureau Of Investigation Being a pilot and instructor, I can actually relate to the flight control dynamics, which is pretty realistic in surprisingly many ways. Learning to fly a modern jet is actually pretty easy - it takes only 20-30 hours to reach a level where you under VMC can take off, climb to altitude, perform some level turns and even perform a reasonable and non-lethal landing. I would say that anybody, capable of flying a simulator on this level, would be able to pick up these skills in a few weeks of intense training. The difficulty is to learn more complex flight maneuvers, flying under IMC and adverse weather conditions and then of course to learn to handle the onboard systems. It would take many months, to reach an even half-decent level where you don't risk killing yourself during every flight.
