I grew up in northeastern wisconsin into my mid 20s. I remember more than one winter when there was ice on my bedroom windows. That is ice not only on the outside of the storm and inner windows, there was ice on the inside of my windows on the inside of our house. I spend many winters wearing long winter underwear under my pants all day for the whole winter. I also always wore a heavy sweater even inside our house, at school and work. I always wore a very warm hat, winter heavy hooded jacket with gloves. My feet were always cold standing outside or even in one place indoors,

The aircraft carrier I served on was 1070 feet long. CV 62 USS Independence. Crazy that these ship are just about as long. Just about a Semi truck and trailer difference in length. That's one big ship.

I enjoy watching your videos of the ships coming in and going out! My daughter and family live in Hermantown now, but when she was first married (2000) they lived on Park Point! My son was almost 8 and boy did we have fun watching the ships come in! @@vibewithmike I know!! I was up there over Christmas and the fog was terrible, no snow (who would of thought that!) and warm! Down here we’ve had 3 snowstorms since this past Tuesday! I have about 12-14” of snow on my deck, and we have a wind chill advisory until probably Tuesday! Schools were closed twice this week because of a heavy snow and whiteout/blizzard type conditions! I’m staying in!!!

I know frostbite can be pretty serious. I have a few friends that did have issues from frostbite that has lasted their whole life. I stay very warm and I’m close to a vehicle that is very warm to get in right away.

Growing up even in the 1960s and 1970s in northeastern wisconsin that is not that cold. I remember our indoor kitchen sink pipes nearly frozen exposed to the outer wall of our home with a little insulation and less than 8" from the outside. I remember more than a few days under -20 degrees F with full sun. The snow crunches under your feet it is so cold. Our hone gas heater is cycling on and off day and night trying to keep it over the 60s inside. The homes were not as well insulated as they are today. We lived in another home with thin insulation in our attic. We went out and bought many bags of vermiculite ( insulation very light in granular form ). We just dumped these bags of insulation in the attic spreading it out to over 6" deep. Our heating bills were 1/2 of previous winters with just a little more insulation in our attic. Even in Southern California we had another 12" insulation blown into our attic about 5 years ago. Our summer air conditioning and winter heating bills have dropped drastically. Our home was made in the early 1980s with only the minimum insulation to meet building codes of the time. Now the more insulation the better even in our moderate climate. We do get days up and over 115 degrees F with winter temps down to under 25 degrees F. We only may get a few nights so cold. Most winter nights are down to the upper to mid 30s with a few below freezing.

You are so right about that insulation, it makes all of the difference. However, you also have to have good windows or the installation doesn’t matter. Because all of that gets through. Once again, another fabulous comment from our friend Wendy.

I was on a fairly new ship the Sam Laud Christmas time 1981New Years 1982. The season was over but we still kept going shuttling taconite from Loraine to Cleveland . We got stuck in the Ice 100 yards off the Loraine dock. Coast Guard let us sit there a few days as punishment before the icebreaker got us out . We were on Tv during a Browns game with a helo filming us stuck in the ice ! “If you think it is cold at the Stadium look at these guys stuck in the ice “

Surprising temps in places you wouldn’t expect it to be so cold. Crazy weather! It’s 3 degrees with -19 windchill in Manteno IL. I got a little worried when it looked like that very handsome Snowman was going to take the Polar Plunge. Hate to see anything happen to that dapper little fellow! Glad you moved him to safer ground. I am really surprised by the crazy cold temperatures all over the country. I’m shocked by some of the readings people are telling me about down south where it should be warmer.
