Based on the internal physical appearance of the filter made in Indonesia compared to a filter you did previously, my guess it was made by Sakura. The little cup that the coil spring (my preference) fits into, the four rivets that attach the bypass valve, the center core style and the spacing bumps on the base endcap look a lot like the Sakura C-1821. The 15208AA160 was the original filter that came on my Crosstrek, the Fram-made 15208AA15A was the filter available at the dealer parts counter until recently and it was replaced by the 15208AA20A which can be picked up at the parts counter for less than $10.

I like them both, with a slight edge to made in Japan. Both are well made, very clean and use similar materials. But a hat tip to both for being so clean and well made.

The Indonesia one was prob made in Jan 3rd. International dates use day, month, year format. Only America uses month, day, year.

I probably stick with the Japanese made filter, but the Indonesia built one is also well made ....both seem built way better than the USA made Subaru Blue FRAM can filters or the Champ Labs made filter also sold by Subaru

I do like the coil springs but in this case I'd take the Japan made filter because I think it has a better filter media.

Indonesia, Thailand and Japan seem to always have their ducks in a row when it comes to producing quality mid-priced filters. Wix has expanded into Thailand and Indonesia and you don’t see sloppy glue, and uneven pleats on the filters produced there. I’m just guessing but I think it’s because the plants there are new state-of-the-art factories. Wix’s plant in Gastonia, NC is pretty ancient. Compare a 1334 produced in Thailand with one produced in Gastonia and you’ll see a marked difference between the two.

I agree they probably have New machinery and thats why no excess glue.

Glad to see that Subaru North America finial gets a good oil filter. It would be interesting to see how the Japanese and Indonesian Filter stacks up against the WixXP 57055XP that many of us have been using because the Fram 15208aa15a was so bad. Great Video.

On date codes on the filters, especially the ones that are not USA made, are probably dd/mm/yy. Usa dates are different from pretty much rest of the world. We use mm/dd/yy...

While I'd have no need to use either filter, based on the significant media area difference, I'd choose the made in Japan Tokyo Roki filter. It would be interesting to know (unlikely) the efficiencies of the filters.' If' similar to some other Asian OEM filters, not very efficient. Thanks for the vid.

Great video! Just wondering if the Japan made filter had a silicone ADBV since it looked shinier than the Indonesia made filter. I heard that the black ADBV's in Japanese filters can still be silicone. Did you also perform a burn test of these ADBV's? Thanks!
@WhipCityWrencher
@WhipCityWrencher 10 ай бұрын
Thanks! No, I didnt do a test on these. The only one I found to have the silicone anti-drain back valve was a made-in-Thailand Toyota Denso oil filter. The link below, and that one had a greenish-colored anti-drain back valve. I'll try and do a test on these soon. kzbin.info/www/bejne/i6GYiIOFjLxmmJo&ab_channel=WhipCityWrencher

Thanks so much! I also noticed on the made in Indonesia filter that when you tested the bypass valve by pushing in the "button" valve that it appeared to stick open and that you had to push it again to get it free to close. It looks like there was a higher lip edge that got caught on the opening versus the made in Japan filter. I've seen reports on some other tester videos that showed the same thing on a NAPA Platinum oil filter. Perhaps this could be a test in all your future oil filter reviews because if the bypass valve gets stuck open there is zero filtration which would be disastrous and completely hidden to the car owner. Thanks again for all your great work to help educate us!

@@DKSOOHOO1 A lot of them get stuck because I'm pushing on the side of them and they get hung up on the edge. I doubt this will happen when oil is pushing evenly on the whole surface. Thanks!

With the image under the microscope the Japanese one is the way to go in my mind. The 2 steel performated cores, which would flow the greatest volume of liquid? I guess filling and timing flow of liquid would give you a good idea but there may not be much in it. Nice nerdy video! :)

Subaru no longer sells the 15208AA15A (there was a stop gap blue filter that looks like it is made by Champ Labs after that) and now they sell the 15208AA20A. I always do my own oil changes so I can pick what I want to install.

@@jeffkortsch8276 ,yup that stop gap blue Champ Labs built filter, was totally blank & didn't have the Subaru information printed on the filter, just the box .....I always told my brother to order & buy the Japanese built filters too ,I cut open the FRAM one once & showed him the poor build quality, I definitely would use the Indonesia built Subaru filters as well, they also look well made as well
