Excellent review. Thank you. I honestly don't understand all the internet hate for the 86/BRZ. It is one of the last true analog sports cars (like the Miata). I know for a fact that just adding power or grip does not make this a better car. Yet, 'car enthusiasts' who probably never owned or tracked a car in their life seem to focus on the lack of power, no turbo, Prius tires etc...It's such a shame because not appreciating what Toyota/Subaru has tried to offer here could ultimately mean the demise of these affordable fun little niche cars. Luckily Toyota/Subaru have decided to continue the line by developing a new version (2021?). I hope they don't stray too far from the original.

Big facts If this was released on the late 90s early 00s no one would bat an eye on its figures Every "car guy" wanted a cheap back to basics sports car and Toyota/Subaru delivered. Everyone's just so obsessed with power now they forget about its chassis capabilities

So very true! My 99 civic is very unassuming, (full interior, ac, ps, pw, cruise control) yet it can keep up and surpass focus rs', new civic type r, evox, etc on track. Tuned and driven correctly, an analog type of car is ecstasy!

I doubt they will deviate far from from the first gen car. I imagine it will be similar to the 2019 MX5. A FA20 or variation with revised powerband. More mid range torque would fix the complains of power where people would use it around town.

I love my 86! They are so fun to drive and mod. I am 2 weeks into driving it boosted and although I like it better with more power, it's still a great car NA. Best bang for the buck is to keep it NA, go flex fuel/header/tune/oil cooler for the power side. Then spend the rest on tires, suspension, and driver mode/track time.

I also experienced a decent amount of understeer in my Toyota 86 at Toronto Motorsports Park. I was running 245/45/17 Bridgestone Potenza RE71R tires which make the car a lot less likely to oversteer, and the understeer went away when the tires got up to temp, but came back when they got too hot... as you said, depending on what you’re looking for, tires play a huge role. Thank you for the review and thank you for talking about the car the way you did. All to often with this platform it gets overlooked and talked down on by the people that claim to know cars. We have heard it all before "get over and tell us does it do what it was intended to do?" is all that I am thinking about. Here is a side kicker to that, the praise about the Miata (excluding the 2019 RF) has almost the exact same stats minus 300+lbs yet you never hear a peep about it being underpowered or lacks amenities yet it is and does.

Speed Academy Great comparison, I’m sure I heard TRD model has Sachs dampers suspension wise, and you are correct spring rates were changed generally on GT86 compared with BRZ. Interesting you say tires changed the character, in one of the Tada-San videos for 86 he said exactly that, in that the HP primacy tires give a certain character which is not quite the same with other tires.

From what I've noticed, stock BRZ/FRS/86s all understeer a fair bit as soon as you put tyres on them. It's so easy to overdrive the Primacy's, it probably makes you think the car is oversteery, but in reality in steady cornering, there's push.
@Marco-rw3ut
@Marco-rw3ut 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, stock brz/86 push like an audi, or more in my opinion, but with a good setup the car has a really good front grip for a McPherson platform. Anything less than - 1 degree of front camber is a perfect recipe for a lot of understeer on this platform and with R compound tyres the problem is bigger 'cause the rear multilink does a really good job, making a lot of rear traction that you can' t really use. Tyres + camber bolts should be the first mods on this cars, they really transform it.

I know for fact the traction control was off because she was new to stick shift and wanted hill assist on. Cant have both together. I MISS THAT CAR LIKE CRAZY!! I barely drove it but what little I did I tested the thing. That traction control, I dont know exactly what it was but when on it turned the car into a monster. I think it would have saved her if she had it on. The sound of shifting still in my head. I loved it. The speed was great. The look. The gas mileage. In this video the BRZ had the rear spoiler the TRD didnt. That spoiler adds traction. I loved the seats the steering. We also wanted to compare so we looked at the Subaru version. It looked better. They're equal depending on taste.

I love my 2013 FRS. Still fun today. A little wider wheels and tires, tune, catback and it’s great fun. I’ve also never understood why Miatas aren’t called underpowered yet the 86 is with similar power/weight ratio.

i prefer a stiff brake pedal over one with a lot of travel, because i like to modulate with pedal pressure over travel. besides that both cars are the same, you buy a good set of tires and wheels / coil overs both cars would react almost identical to one another. I find it weird that Subaru would make the cars handling limit lower, I get that it feels fun, but that's because you're going slower and therefore the car is easier to control, I feel that gives a false sense of the drivers actual car control.

Was just about to post this. The TS is the real track attack version of the car. It would carry more speed through corners than the TRD version. It even comes with same tires as the TRD version.

Seems like the tuning on the A86 would be spot on if it had an extra 50hp (or snow condition with good winter tires). That way you can dial-in over-steer with the throttle, which for me is the entire point of having a rear drive. I'm not a fan of the go-cart tuning when all my driving is on the street.

@@gigi9467 you mean like an AP2 S2000 😉. Ok, jokes aside Toyota needs to be much more involved in the powertrain development of this next generation 86/BRZ because they are the ones that knows how to make high performance naturally aspirated engines, not Subaru. The current 86/BRZ engine is mostly Subaru except for its fuel injection system, which is Toyota's D4-S.

I don't understand why the Raiu didn't get the Pilot Sport 4s or PSS. The tS got the 4s. I've read opinions that argue it is more fun with the Primacys, but I personally liked my BRZ sooooo much more when I upgraded to a tire with more grip.

Not the last editions as they introduced the new editions a bit later in 2019. The BRZ gets another tS version but it's no where close to how cool the 2018 tS was and the 86 gets the Hakone edition but I think that's mostly cosmetic. However, Toyota and Subaru announced a 2nd gen in the works as Subaru and Toyota begin to make more cars together

Push probably came from a larger diameter wheel being on the 18s.... vs the brz in a 17. That and the need for more throttle input per steering angle due to a larger and stickier tire. Dunno just a former canyon hooligan

The AE86 generation of the Toyota Corolla Levin and Toyota Sprinter Trueno is a small, lightweight coupe introduced by Toyota in 1983 as part of the fifth generation Toyota Corolla lineup. ... The word "trueno" is Spanish for thunder, and "levin" is Old English for "lightning" Toché to Subaru for calling it raiu because thunder comes before the lighting, unless they just keeping it all same same
