At 71,895 just changed the fuel filter for the good old Rex. Thank you thank you thank you Mr. Subaru man I can’t thank you enough for your videos. I followed your steps exactly as you said (even though the 17 model year WRX is slightly different) and got the job done today. I’d like to suggest for others, it may be easier to run the tank down close to Empty (not all the way of course) when relieving the fuel pressure to avoid spillage in a garage or something. Definitely took most of the day but I put paper towels, rags, and covered all of the interior (I have the Limited model) to keep the leather same as was from the factory. Also the clips were slightly different from the fuel lines and minor differences but I strongly encourage others to replace the gaskets (a,b,c,) and stick with OEM always. The filter definitely did a good job as when I took it apart I saw the debris from all the years refueling. Thanks again!!! And happy Easter!!

What's the difference with OEM and a reputable aftermarket model with new gaskets i wonder, would it just require a reinstall every 50,000km instead of OEM 80,000km change?

All the indie shops around me and the dealerships say this is not required. (2011 subaru outback 2.5 Premium CVT at 135k miles). I live in the Austin area. The dealership gave a quote to get the entire fuel pump assembly done. It was almost $1000. Dude. Put the fuel filter on the outside! Sheesh. Nice video

Its still going to do that because there is still a little pressure in the line. Just get some rags to put under the line before you pull the line off. You don't want to run the pump dry it's bad for it.

Changed my filter this last weekend on my 2013 2.5 OB. A bit messy, but your video made it so easy. However, the little o ring/gasket thing that goes on the pump came off so I wasn't getting enough pressure. Realized this was the issue after I saw it in the old filter unit. Had to do the whole thing over. Can't wait to see more videos for this Gen!

I found undoing the fuel filler cap (after running the engine) and allowing the pressure inside the tank to equalise for 30 seconds or so reduced the amount of remaining fuel in the fuel lines significantly. A LOT less mess :)

2019 Limited with 22k. Just got the recall notice for potential impeller deformation, made an appointment with the dealer for tomorrow. After watching this I'd rather they give me the pump and do it myself but it doesn't work like that. I have zero experience with their service department and no reason to think they won't do a good job, but frankly there's only two mechanics in town that I trust to do a good job besides myself.

Another good and timely video (for me, at least). My '11 OB 2.5 suffered fuel delivery problems and I figured either the filter (never changed in 180k miles) or pump slip-sticking. I have an entire new unit, pump and filter - if I'm gonna do all that unbolting and re-gasketing I'm only gonna do it one time and be done with it. LOLOL! Great stuff, my friend.

That's news to me.. my MY08 3.0 Spec B is on 140k miles and don't think anyone has touched the fuel lines, I noticed my fuel trims ( long term) are a bit high, this could be the reason.. Edit: Part nr: 42072AA121, that you refer to as the "sock" or "strainer" is not for the fuel pump. Instead is the fuel filter for the fuel sub level sensor on the left side of the tank. The main fuel pump and filter is on the right side and is a different pre filter sock that doesn't appear to be sold separately from subaru.

@@MrSubaru1387 Great channel you have! Question. I live in Hungary - Europe, I have an EUDM Outback BR, 2010 version with 2.5 i engine. I have changed the in tank fuel filter recently. In these models, the reserve fuel line is coming through in the tank above the cardan shaft tunnel, and not on the top of the tank. But the working method is the same. While the pump sucks fuel from the main chamber, also fuel coming from the reserve chamber because of some kind of venturi effect - to my knowladge some. Here comes the problem, when I installed the new filter I was driving the like before, when I noticed the fuel run out, however the fuel level gauge was almost below half tank. I was wondering how....then I figured out maybe I forgot to put back something on a right way? I took out the filter checked, everything was fine. Next time I run out of petrol again...gosh. Nowasdays I refuel when I see half fuel to avoid this because I have lost - donno what is cause this problem, cause I did everything on a right was. PLEASE HELP!:D

@@MrSubaru1387 well I had the hose clamps on so I guess that's why I didn't have any gas coming out. I literally had like 2 drops of gas drip out. I spilled a tiny tiny bit when I pulled the filter out but I used a small, plastic waste basket waiting and just stuck the it in that so it wouldn't piss gas all over. But i must say, you are pretty slick. Taking that bracket out was very difficult! You made it look like the thing just comes right out. It took me 20 minutes of muscling and even had to bend that opening a little for it to come out.

My 2008 Impreza 2.5i has a gas fuel drip (but it only leaks when tank is full: between completely-full and 7/8-full). I think it's either the fuel assy cover that's cracked (or gasket seal leaking) or I have a rusted tanks (rust pinhole or something). I thought the fuel filler neck could be rusted out, but it doesn't seem to be the right location for that kind of leak. It leaks gas just in front (about 12 inches forward) of the front edge of the rear right tyre (so too much in forward to be the filler neck IMHO) and slightly going towards (around 18 to 24 inch) the midline of the car. There is a plastic cover over the right side of the fuel tank, and fuel is dripping by one of the holes of that plastic cover (the lowest hole of the cover, which is kinda in the center of the cover), seems to be the right location for the fuel pump assy. I noticed the fuel leak when filling at the gas station. I might have overfilled the gas tank a bit (was pushing a bit more gas in even though the fuel nozzle trigger was "clicking" tank full), then I smelled the odor of gas. I hope it's the fuel assy gasket, as I am about to change the fuel filter and gasket (already have the OEM replacement fuel filter and gasket). Maybe it's the gasket leaking. Maybe it's a loose fuel line connected to the fuel pump assy. Maybe it's a crack in the plastic fuel pump assy. I just hope it's not a rusted fuel tank (expensive fix) ! I do antirust treatment every year, but I live in Canada (salt on the roads). If it's the tank, I'm probably going to get rid of my impreza, but I'd be very sad as I love the thing! It's a 2008 2.5i non-turbo but it's only 99000 km (62000 mile). I just had the Timing belt/tensionner/pulleys done (low milage but 12 years old). Also did a new coolant flush (OEM blue subaru coolant). Changed to new OEM spark plugs. Changed the PCV valve. Cleaned the MAF sensor. Just changed my brake rotors and brake pads on all 4 wheels (and sanded, and painted my calipers, redid the square seals and caliper piston changed). Did the front swaybar links and bushings. Did a ball joint. Front CV axle looks good. Brake fluid flushed. Recharged my battery. New synthetic 5W30. Man I hope it's not the tank that's rusted ! Do Subaru Impreza gas tank have a reputation to rust easily ??? Thanks for the video. Thumbs up !

Questions: 1. New gasket and strainer for the fuel pump re-installation was recommended, but I am not sure where they are located. What is the bag-like thing connected to the fuel pump? Is this the strainer that is suppose to be replaced? 2. I was thinking of running SeaFoam through the gas to clean out lines, fuel injectors, cylinders, etc. Do you think this would also work to clean out the filter or should it be removed for other reasons as well (like degradation)? Or perhaps SeaFoam will break loose debris that won't be good for the rest of the system? So I guess I'm not sure if I should do this before or after a filter change... Looking forward to your thoughts.

@@MrSubaru1387 Sorry. I understand it now. Thank you. I was looking at the Fuel Tank assembly drawing and there were two openings. The bigger one was for the Fuel pump and filter, and the smaller one was for the fuel level sensor. I got the two mixed up. Thank you.

Would this be in the same location on a 2010 2.5i? Also I went to my dealer to get the part and they said its a lifetime part and they don't replace it??? However my wife's fuel gauge no longer reaches the "F" when the tank is full and the enginge has been stalling out at idle. I'm pretty convinced its a fuel flow issue... thoughts?

Can't say without measuring fuel pressure. I'd guess there's a fuel float issue if the tank won't read full.

Stupid question but how do you cycle the ignition without starting it with a punch button start?
@corgiepic
@corgiepic Ай бұрын
You probably figured it out by now, but you just keep your foot off the brake if you want to "key on" without it cranking. If you're doing it for the purposes in this video (trying to purge fuel), don't worry about it starting; it will just help it burn out the remaining fuel in the lines and quickly sputter out. If you want to crank it without starting for other purposes, you could remove the fuse for the fuel injectors, or if you have one, you could probably use a scan tool to disable the injectors.

Curious what the symptoms were that requires doing this or was this just general maintenance? My US spec outback 2.5L stalls when ideling. Say putting clutch in slowing to a stop sign. Rpm goes down and drops off to a stall lights on dash. Or if it didn't stall. Sitting at a light neutral no clutch in food on brake idle at its sort of normal 500 rpm but then drops and sometimes recovers but other times stalls. I've replaced the mass air flow sensor which didn't really help. The car I bought used was not very well maintained. 188k miles on the car. When I bought it I paid for a heads up rebuild including valve job. And exhaust work. Idle has been very bouncy since I bought it but now stalls all the time. Have to heal toe at lights to keep rpm up and brake at the same time.

My nephew ran his 2014 Subaru outback low on fuel and now it runs rough. I'm thinking the fuel pump sucked up some debris from the bottom of the fuel tank. I'm thinking about just replacing the whole fuel pump.

Can overfilling your tank crack the plastic top of that plastic fuel assy ? or make the connected clipped-on fuel lines leaks at the connections points to the fuel pump assy ? Have you seen this before ?
