Worked great! I didn't think it would need it since my intake plumbing is all nice and clean on my 04 XT. I was completely wrong! Didn't need to remove throttle body, just held it open and wiped the other side.. I used crc throttle body cleaner and it shredded the gunk.

2010 Forester, 218,000 miles. Rough idle, sometimes die at a stop. This procedure gave me back a smooth idle, engine doesn't die at stops. Took maybe 30 minutes. Inside of the throttle plate looked like the bottom of a tar bucket. Probably doesn't help it uses a quart of oil every 500 miles. But it's paid for and reliable.

MrSubaru1387 my daughter just had our 2022 Subaru impreza service at 10,800 miles. Tech suggested throttle body cleaning. The tech uploaded pictures and to me looked like a small amount of varnish on the plate and no carbon build up around the circumference of the plate or body. Is it normal for a dealership to suggest a cleaning at 13 months old and 10,800 mile? Thanks if you respond. 4:56

Well here I am once again MrSubaru. Thank you so much for keeping my baby alive! Honestly my 01 Forester has been one of the most reliable vehicles I've owned and part of that I owe to you for helping me maintain my vehicle properly. ready for an oil change and new fuel filter too. been getting some hesitation when pushing the pedal down fast and taking off from stops so just moving through the suspects, already did spark plugs and wires and still getting it so figure its a fuel supply issue, I don't think the fuel filter has ever been replaced on this car. heck the battery I just changed was 7 years old!

Hey, Robert! Just a quick add to the throttle body cleaning video. I had done the throttle body cleaning about 20k miles/a year ago per this video and all of the sudden, when my girlfriend borrowed the car (2011 Outback 2.5), it started to hesitate upon take off...but only when the AC was on. No fault codes or anything. Acted almost like torque converter slippage 😖but I had removed the valve body, replaced the solenoids and replaced ALL of the CVT fluid after having done a thorough fluid swap out (drained/filled/drained after 3k miles/filled again) prior to the Christmas lights coming on, so...🤞🤞🤞 Turned out to be a dirty MAF sensor! Cleaned it and when I inspected the throttle body, pulled the MAP sensor and cleaned that, too. Did the idle relearn procedure (thanks!) and all is good once again. I was really surprised I was getting no codes though. Thought this may help someone.

Thank you for this information, also as you do the cleaning also always check the air filter. Mine was displaying check engine light and was still hesitating after all the cleanup until i replaced the air filter. This was after diagnosis that reported RICH AIR-FUEL mixture meaning less air much fuel. If it reports LEAN AIR-FUEL mixture, its time to check the fuel filter.

I have an 02 forester , similar symptoms but mine feel like the back diff is trying to catch up with the front diff, like my gear gets stuck on high rpm or like if it was stick and I down shifted but once I step on the gas it pulls /jumps forward. I replaced the trans, fluids filters and still same. But I don’t think my year has a maf sensor, I’m going to try the map /tps sensors, clean the throttle body plus add a K&N filter, read some where that helped them

Good video! Thanks! One thing I want to ask… I’ve cleaned TB’s on other vehicles and was informed to never manually push open the flap. This triggers something and the car will need to go through a drive cycle hopefully reading right. What I’ve done is turn the key to on, put a block on the gas pedal to open the flap, then proceed to cleaning. My question is: is it different for Subaru?

I wonder if a dirty throttle body can lead to a slight hesitation when accelerating - 2002 OB 5speed? I have been trying to track down a problem for the past two year - new plugs, wires, fuel filter, O2 sensor front, idle control valve .... to no avail. And I think it all went tits up when I added a can or royal purple max fuel cleaner to the car, it was never the same after that .... odd :( Basically when one accelerates, backs off the throttle and then accelerates again it hesitates slightly, enough for it to be annoying - we've done 600 mile road trips with the car and of course on the highway it's not really an issue but around town this tractor is a pig to drive.

Do you have any troubleshooting - since after driving my 2016 Subaru outback (~150K) almost 30 miles and parking that the battery appeared to just die. I generally drive the car 30 miles each way to work on weekdays and was driving the car after 3 days of vacation. I was able to start the car back again after wiggling the key a bit in the ignition switch and getting it to crank. But after parking and before attempting to restart the vehicle, the car will not respond to key remote lock door or even unlock door {No key fob battery issue as I could resume using the key remote fob after the car started up}. This had happened very occasionally since 65K miles and I saw a service bulleting regarding the battery issue by Subaru for MY 2016 Outback, however while under extended warranty neither the local authorized dealer - Hodges, nor the Subaru Customer Advocate could guide me properly and this issue remained unresolved since then as it was happening very rarely.

Disconnect the battery for about 30 seconds. Reconnect battery. Turn the key on for 10 seconds, without cranking it. Now, start it. Should be good. The first 10 seconds of key on after and battery disconnect is when the throttle goes through a diagnostic procedure. It won't start during this.

MrSubaru1387 no luck, I’m gonna run back through and check everything’s plugged in tomorrow. If I end up having to replace it then I’ll be using this video all over again, probably about time to pop a new one in anyways, 190k miles and doesn’t look like anyone ever touched the thing.

MrSubaru1387 alright so it’s a 2007 Forester non turbo and I’ve recently replaced the spark plug, wires, and ignition coil, it ran better after that but I wanted to finish it off cleaning the TB. I just went through and checked my work and it looks like everything was plugged back in correctly. I’m gonna try disconnecting the battery and charging it before trying again but if that doesn’t work where should I look next? Thanks so much for the help so far, hours of googling couldn’t tell me as much as I learned from this video alone. EDIT: could I have put the new gasket in wrong?

Always love the videos man thank you for clear concise info! Quick question, 03 Baja NA 257k on her, recently its been having issues idling (low idle) i pulled and cleaned the IACV and it helped some but now it's having a issue where it stumbles to start unless i hold the pedal down, then after about 2 mins at 2k or so it will idle around 700ish. I haven't had the box off the check the TB but I am sure it's as gunked up as the IACV was. Could that be the issue? Or possibly a bad fuel filter? It drives mostly fine excpet at times at stops it drops to under 500 rpm and nearly stalls. Thanks and sorry for the long question!

@weaponxa

Thanks for the quick reply! None at all which is what is making this tricky for me to diagnose. I had used WD40 to clean the IACV which is what i saw in a video could that cause issues? It was stalling at stops before this, usually if i had to stop faster than normal. Thoughts?

Hi there I just installed a water return line lifted up engine just enough to get it in it did move a very little to the right but not much! I did disconnect the harnesses from engine block! I cleaned up the throttle body and sprayed the mass air flow sensor now it will not start sounds like when you pulled the fuse for the fuel pump!! It did start before!! I did take it off to clean I didn’t replace anything just cleaned now will not turn over! I might have disconnected something but wouldn’t I get a code? I just got a blue driver but if car doesn’t start I cant read live data!! Can you please try to help narrow this down!? From cleaning would the engine need to be reprogrammed, seeing I unplugged and cleaned it up! I could have missed something but not too sure!! Any advice would be great!!!

Hey I have low idle on my Legacy 3.0. When gear is in D or R idles it's under 500 rpm and the car shake a little, it does not shutdown the car, but once I change gear to N or P the rpm rise above 600 and stops shaking additional when gear is in D or R and turns AC or light on shake stops and rpm rieses above 600. Trying to correct the issue I already perform a throttle body cleaning, an injector cleaning, MAF sensor cleaning and the issue remains... I have to say that I start to notice this after I change my alternator, so Subaru check and test my battery, and alternator to see if there were voltage issues, but everything seems to be ok ¿any thoughts that could be the issue and how to solve? Thanks
