I have actually owned both. The N is just by far a more "Fun" car. The tech is better. The speed is quicker. And obviously, it sounds better. A punk kid smashed it and I couldn't afford to replace it with another N, so I got the WRX. For the money I paid, I got a deal (2K under MSRP). It's a good car. Reliable and it actually corners better than the N, but it just doesn't have the same spirit. I'm sure I'll be happy with it over the life of the car, but I won't forget the fun I had with the Elantra N.

This review of the WRX is so real. As a owner of a 22 WRX I share the opinion of the reviewers. I bought my 22 WRX last April and I was and still is impressed with my WRX driving dynamics. I had my first experience with the Elantra N last weekend. It was a 6 speed w/ a piggyback ECU tune and a small exhaust mod. I sat in the passenger seat as we bombed down a twisty road and I got to say.. I absolutely slept on the Elantra N! What a performer.. sounded great, I was laughing like a kid.. I was blown away. The critics of the old WRX said it was not grown up, too rough, interior was cheap, and geared to more of younger generation. The GT has check all the boxes of the previous past complaints. Now the GT WRX is not as fun because its not a manual. The interior now is great looking, the infotainment is solid, the options of all the driving is great, and the looks are not as flamboyant, but the car is solid. Elantra is good but at the end of the day, its FWD. There are companies like COBB that are all over these new WRX's and can really push the engine on this WRX. To each their own. I did the new WRX. I have a 2011 WRX LTD and will stick with it.

8:08 - There is a reason many cars, including the Elantra N, don't do that: noise limits. The EN in sport and N mode likely fails a number of states' exhaust noise laws, and in California at least, the testing is supposed to be done in the loudest mode that the car can be in at startup. By putting you back into normal mode, it ensures that the exhaust is not loud enough to fail the noise test.

The real magic of the VB WRX doesn't show up until you tune it. I know you can tune any car. But the VB WRX makes huge gains on very mild/safe mods in a way that none of it's competitors do. For MT enthusiasts: I had a 2013 Genesis Coupe and someone at Hyundai thought it was a good idea to combine the clutch slave cylinder & throw-out bearing into a single part. The first one started leaking brake fluid at 45k miles which was bad, but the second one they put in under warranty only lasted 19k miles and failed completely with no warning while I was on a road trip in Oct 2022. It took Hyundai almost 6 months to fix everything (still just under the 10-year warranty thankfully). As soon as I got it back, I traded it in on a 2023 WRX manual, which uses the time-tested separate clutch parts setup. Time will tell, but I love it so far. If Hyundai is using the same part on the Elantra N manuals, I wouldn't buy one.

With that money, I’ve got Ohlins, 4-pot Brembos, 19lb wheels and PS4S tires on the way, and I already have the car on a conservative e30 tune making 330whp/360ft-lbs. The EN does seem good for those that will leave it stock (and those that can deal with the awful ride quality), but for an actual tuner car enthusiast the WRX is the best performance per dollar proposition on the market right now by a long shot.

As an older gentleman, the WRX's ability to loaf around is a +. If I drove the Elantra N as a daily, I would be more inclined to rag it out all the time and when I wasn't doing that, I would be thinking about what I could do to soften it up. So adaptive suspension +. Looks are in the eye of the beholder. WRX is, dare I say less boy racer, which suits me better also.

I sold my Elantra N manual after 9 months. It was fun, handled well and I loved the tech. However, it’s fit and finish was poor. The front wheel hop was horrible. I have not pulled the trigger on a WRX yet, but I eventually plan to. The N is not a good daily. Plus, the clutch and transmission where just too light and not very good IMO. If I got an N again, I would get the DCT. If you turn down the exhaust noise, I actually found the N to be boring. Even though the WRX may not have the same performance feel, it is the better car to own. If you want to have a track car, get the N. If you want a good daily get the WRX.

Great review, I really enjoy my 23' WRX. My daily roads are very windy and with a lot of change in slope and elevation. Can't complain at all. With the endless supply of aftermarket parts you can essentially make the car whatever you want it to be. I'm not familiar enough with Hyundai's part market. But it seems to be growing as well. Either way can't go wrong, just all depends on what you value in a car. Test drive both for sure.

How would the Mazda3 stack up in this comparison? I feel like its kind of a forgotten competitor in this segment. It has an AWD variant, turbo, nice interior and a subjectively nice exterior. While I've not driven the N I do own a manual VB and let me say that you have a lot of fun. You don't get the fancy modes etc, but that's because manual it's always in sport and you just choose normal sport or track sport which just defeats the traction control (which does make a noticable difference still). You don't get the pops sure, but it's also a tuner car still and drop a new intake, exhaust, and tune and suddenly it's fighting in a different class entirely. And winning. The wrx stock loses to the next level up, but not by much. Then minor upgrades and you are pushing 340hp.

Wow... the same is true for CVT's apparently! The best CVT's are the ones that are bad about being CVT's; That DON'T put the engine in the ideal ratio all the time, they fake having gears! Let's be real about why there is CVT in the WRX. Subaru doesn't have the budget to develop a new torque converter auto. They've gone CVT in every other slushbox subie for the past 10 years. Unless they wanted to release the WRX as manual only, they had to take their CVT and make it shift like a DCT or traditional automatic with gears. It's not because CVT's are any better than a traditional auto or a DCT for the application, its simply that Subaru has to work with what they've got. Good job, whoever writes the software that controls the CVT.

They made the new '24 Impreza hatch so much better looking without all that WRX cladding, so apparently Subaru is capable of designing small cars that aren't awkward/ugly.

Safety warning systems... Have you seen Jason Cammisa's video on the GR Corolla/Yaris? Apparently even though they put in a feature where you can pull the handbrake and the AWD system will disconnect the rear wheels so they can lock up and help you get around a tight corner, it also auto-dials 911 for you whenever you do it.

The body side on hyundai's nowadays looks to me like the body panels got accidentally creased during shipping and they did their best to flatten it out. Or like the creases that are put in the walls of large sections of ductwork to add rigidity. it doesn't strike me as an aesthetically pleasing design choice.

Great reviews as always, guys, and I hope Paul feels better! And you will not find another car review channel with a review who references a trebuchet!! 🙂 I wanted a WRX for years. Test drove a few, but never did buy one. I'm now 53 and the WRX just seems too much like a kid's car to me. That's not really the case, but I think that boat has sailed. And for the sticker prices on new WRXs, there are much nicer cars you can buy, even some with AWD. (Not all-time AWD like a Subie, but you still have AWD if needed.) But what really kills the WRX for me is the fuel economy. I drive 15-20k miles per year, and I can't stomach a car that averages mid-20s mpg. Also, Subaru seems proud of that pattern in the plastic cladding, saying it improves fuel economy, but is the trade-off in ugliness really worth the extra 0.25 mpg you might gain? I agree with Paul, the car does look better in person. But it's still worse looking than the last generation. Having said all that, if Subaru made this in a 4-door hatch version again, I'd probably buy one. Their stubborn refusal to bring back the hatch is crazy. They would sell, and maybe even outsell the sedan version. I like the looks of the Elantra N, as well as a couple other cars from Hyundai. But I think it goes back to my feeling that I'm just too old for the boy racer machine now. It seems like it would be tough to be a daily driver for me. So I guess I'll just have to admire the N on the rare occasions I see one.

@@staylor0902 100%... if we look at the last 15-20 years we're *definitely* not moving towards more or larger screens. Remember in 2008 when you had 15 TVs that were 75" and now you only have one and it's 15"? Or how phones are (not) getting smaller. Or how cars have *literally* gotten more and larger screens year-over-year since then? Meh, it's probably just a fad like the Internet, the cellular telephone, and the car itself. I haven’t met a WRX on the road that I could not handle in my N manual. They do not intimidate me whatsoever and I purposely nudge them to get some action. Maybe it’s because their drivers haven’t been that skilled or maybe the car doesn’t inspire confidence like my N does in my ability to drive spiritedly. Of course that’s when the roads are not wet or covered with snow but I don’t drive like a hooligan in those conditions anyway. I slap on my winter tires when it’s cold and get by just fine.
@Cornbread-gi6kt

@@boogiedownkid5465 that might be true. But there’s certainly a major reason why many cars and vehicles have 4 wheel drive. Particularly the most expensive cars in the world.
