I have actually owned both. The N is just by far a more "Fun" car. The tech is better. The speed is quicker. And obviously, it sounds better. A punk kid smashed it and I couldn't afford to replace it with another N, so I got the WRX. For the money I paid, I got a deal (2K under MSRP). It's a good car. Reliable and it actually corners better than the N, but it just doesn't have the same spirit. I'm sure I'll be happy with it over the life of the car, but I won't forget the fun I had with the Elantra N.

This review of the WRX is so real. As a owner of a 22 WRX I share the opinion of the reviewers. I bought my 22 WRX last April and I was and still is impressed with my WRX driving dynamics. It’s a fun car. I don’t mind the black cladding. I predict that this car is going to be a legend in a few years.

I sat in the passenger seat as we bombed down a twisty road and I got to say.. I absolutely slept on the Elantra N! What a performer.. sounded great, I was laughing like a kid.. I was blown away. The critics of the old WRX said it was not grown up, too rough, interior was cheap, and geared to more of younger generation. The GT has check all the boxes of the previous past complaints. Now the GT WRX is not as fun because its not a manual. The interior now is great looking, the infotainment is solid, the options of all the driving is great, and the looks are not as flamboyant, but the car is solid. Elantra is good but at the end of the day, its FWD. There are companies like COBB that are all over these new WRX's and can really push the engine on this WRX. To each their own. I did the new WRX. I have a 2011 WRX LTD and will stick with it.

Last fall on my trip to the Tail of the Dragon, doing +5 mph w/ cruize on & ECO mode, I got 38.4-39.8 mpg (using the calculator method, not shown mileage) Keep in mind the elevation changes here, so that's REALLY impressive!

8:08 - There is a reason many cars, including the Elantra N, don't do that: noise limits. The EN in sport and N mode likely fails a number of states' exhaust noise laws, and in California at least, the testing is supposed to be done in the loudest mode that the car can be in at startup. By putting you back into normal mode, it ensures that the exhaust is not loud enough to fail the noise test.

For MT enthusiasts: I had a 2013 Genesis Coupe and someone at Hyundai thought it was a good idea to combine the clutch slave cylinder & throw-out bearing into a single part. The first one started leaking brake fluid at 45k miles which was bad, but the second one they put in under warranty only lasted 19k miles and failed completely with no warning while I was on a road trip in Oct 2022. It took Hyundai almost 6 months to fix everything (still just under the 10-year warranty thankfully). As soon as I got it back, I traded it in on a 2023 WRX manual, which uses the time-tested separate clutch parts setup. Time will tell, but I love it so far. If Hyundai is using the same part on the Elantra N manuals, I wouldn't buy one.

With the endless supply of aftermarket parts you can essentially make the car whatever you want it to be. I'm not familiar enough with Hyundai's part market. But it seems to be growing as well. I just bought my ‘22 WRX Premium for $31k OTD. That leaves me $5k to spend on upgrades before I get close to the EN out the door price. With that money, I’ve got Ohlins, 4-pot Brembos, 19lb wheels and PS4S tires on the way, and I already have the car on a conservative e30 tune making 330whp/360ft-lbs. The EN does seem good for those that will leave it stock (and those that can deal with the awful ride quality), but for an actual tuner car enthusiast the WRX is the best performance per dollar proposition on the market right now by a long shot.

I test drove both for a whole weekend. Wrx is faster off the line but seems to fall over from 3rd gear.. Elantra N is difficult to launch but far more roll on power. They are very close but for ray to day I’d go Elantra N, it hangs with plenty fast cars roll on where the wrx would get gapped.. wrx launches hard but you will break the car if you do this repeatedly.

As soon as they make the GT available in manual, I’ll be interested. Based on their sales numbers of auto versus manual for the last Gen alone, there’s no way that car should’ve released in CVT only. I’m glad it’s not a trash option and that people preferring a non-manual have a decent offering. I just think it should have a manual as well.

Here's what I think this boils down to. The WRX is an aging rally legend, a quirky and fun rally car that has grown up, gone to university, and wants to settle down, but is still able to have fun along the way. The Elantra N, that is the WRX when it first exploded onto the scene in the 1990s, all look-at-me-I'm-fast.

Wow... the same is true for CVT's apparently! The best CVT's are the ones that are bad about being CVT's; That DON'T put the engine in the ideal ratio all the time, they fake having gears! Let's be real about why there is CVT in the WRX. Subaru doesn't have the budget to develop a new torque converter auto. They've gone CVT in every other slushbox subie for the past 10 years. Unless they wanted to release the WRX as manual only, they had to take their CVT and make it shift like a DCT or traditional automatic with gears. It's not because CVT's are any better than a traditional auto or a DCT for the application, its simply that Subaru has to work with what they've got. Good job, whoever writes the software that controls the CVT.

But i absolutely in love with the rally vide of this gen with the cladding, and its light video game/rally steering while paired with the handling of the chassis and AWD system. I feel like im in a rally car. Perfect comment about in person looks cause i did not get the styling at all in pics and videos. But fell in love in person. Thanks for the detailed comparison! Drones + scenery put it over the top! Interesting powertrains worn by dealbreaker exteriors. At least if that Elantra is ever involved in front or rear end collisions, nobody will be able to notice since it comes from the factory pre-mutilated. I don't know what Subaru was thinking either. They made the new '24 Impreza hatch so much better looking without all that WRX cladding, so apparently Subaru is capable of designing small cars that aren't awkward/ugly.

I sold my Elantra N manual after 9 months. It was fun, handled well and I loved the tech. However, it’s fit and finish was poor. The front wheel hop was horrible. I have not pulled the trigger on a WRX yet, but I eventually plan to. The N is not a good daily. Plus, the clutch and transmission where just too light and not very good IMO. If I got an N again, I would get the DCT. If you turn down the exhaust noise, I actually found the N to be boring. Even though the WRX may not have the same performance feel, it is the better car to own. If you want to have a track car, get the N. If you want a good daily get the WRX.

Thank goodness the 2024 gets a better looking front end. One of the main gripes and why I didn't even bother looking at the EN. Now I could live with it. Concerns over long term reliability though, and depreciation with the Hyundai. You're starting to find reviewers now that mention this. VB WRX doesn't seem to make a lot of sense about the premium trim for the price though, unless you are getting hefty discount. Tuning potential on the WRX is superb though, that is definitely worth mentioning, as you don't even need to swap the turbo.

Interesting comparison. Subaru whiffed on the steering feel and the GT has gotten pretty darn expensive. Adding insult, they've abandoned the easy-to-use rotary knobs for the HVAC that I have in both my Forester XT and BRZ. I have to agree with Todd. As much as I'm totally enthralled with the N's performance, I just cannot warm up to the looks. I see there is a refresh coming, but IMO it only made the front end better, while making the rear end much worse. And it still carries the "mark of Zorro" on the doors. Too much going on on the exterior. Good review, as usual. Hope Paul mends up soon.

Kind of where I'm at. I don't mind the mark of Zorro but I like that comparison haha. The design on the side skirts and, to your point, the rear are a rough look though. I think the main thing you missed on the Elantra is people who buy it need to respect the car. If you turn off the stability management/traction control you can get the back end very loose and it will slide around you if you aren't careful or you aren't expecting it. It is a dangerous car to drive if someone drives it hard and they don't know this could happen. I have an Elantra N. The car is a blast! It is way better than I ever could have expected.
