Daniel, I agree with your video that so many people think they have a much better graded raw coin in hand, that they are disappointed in both, bank account and results when Item gets returned. I too, had many coins sent in, only to sit back later and wonder, what the hell was I thinking... I can say I learn on grading on every single coin getting returned whether its what grade, cleaned or damage. But more importantly, any Gem coin out there, was most likely in and out of a slab many times, and just get recycled. The professional Graders probably think, Oh gosh, here that coin is again trying to slip through... Thanks again for another well put video

So glad you did this video. I am going to send in a few (5 or less) and I am waiting, and thinking, and taking a CLOSE 2nd and 3rd and 4th look at them. In my opinion, you need to really scrutinize when you look at these coins. It's hard to get that "money grade" as you say.

After I order another proof Merc on another site, I will have four more of them, the two 42/41 overdates, & the '45 micro S left to buy, and I will have a literally complete set of Mercury dimes

When you were talking about thinking you have a nice coin and then flip it over....I have gone through a lot of 50s nickels and when I finally find a great coin (especially in a hard year like 54-D) then you turn it over and 99 times out of 100 it will have a massive bag mark or some other scratch on it.

Proof coins NEED to be looked at under a Halogen light to properly see the hairlines. To the naked eye, or even under incandescent or fluorescent lighting you just aren't able to see it all. A lesson I've learned and paid for before. Happy collecting!

IMO its better to start with Mint Set Coins because the grading is subjective, check the face first, its all clear ok, next check the fields, should be almost no chatter, ok next step check the rims for nicks, everything good? check the hair look good? next step look at the strike, sharp? good next step, reverse check the high points are they well defined or softly struck? next check the fields, rim, etc... compare to PCGS photo's if you think its MS66 then hope for MS65...check value and decide whether or not to send off.

Excellent video. I still can't understand why someone sends a coin in for grading, doesn't get the grade they want, cracks it out and sends it to the other company only to get a lesser grade or the same grade. Rarely do I see them getting a higher grade.

Dan, as usual spot on with the analysis , I think most if not all of us are hoping for the "lottery" pick in this case MS 70 or MS 69 depending on the submission. The burden of proof falls on the person submitting the coin you have to convince the judge and jury in this case , grading companies it deserves the grade you crave .

I agree with you on grading. Unless it's a museum quality or a RARE piece, I won't do it. I have a friend who had two Maple Privy coins (Don't remember which) and one was in almost perfect shape in a capsule, the other had slight imperfections. He put them up for trade. He got more on the nicer looking coin. The 'buyer' was willing to exchange a better piece for the nicer Maple. So without PCGS/NGC, he got a better deal all on his own. I agree that the coin might have nailed PR70, and been worth much more. But as you said, it doesn't take much to make the grade drop. So you pay to ship and grade it, it comes back and in increased value, you get half of what you paid to have it graded.....not the best deal. BTW, I have 2 Maples Big Foot Privy in capsules. Very clean, no toning, milk spots nothing........Hmm? ;)

I have been watching one particular non-eBay auctioneer (I buy a lot from them), and they have a bunch of 1881-S Morgans in MS64 with varying prices, with the "beautifully toned" ones having the highest estimates. I always thought the brilliant white ones would be the most desirable. At least as far as my bids are concerned, untoned ones get most of my attention, especially as far as the Morgans are concerned. I realize that I am not the only customer, and that the demand might be for those toned coins, but I prefer my old definition of BU.

Hey Need to make sure people understand that the graders use 5X magnification to grade the coins. Just by the naked eye some look greater than they may actually seem.I have some graded that arent that high but just want them in a protective case. That leads to alot of money sometimes but the protection is worth it to me. Enjoy the informative videos, keep up the honest job u doing and as always have a great day.

I know the grading companies need to make money. There should be some kind of slide scale to their pricing. The low end grades should cost less since the coin already has less value. Why should someone have to pay $35 to verify the grade of a coin worth $1.00? The slab and the label don’t cost that much and the graders may look at it for 10 seconds. Who knows? Maybe we will start to see previously graded slabs and labels without the coins selling for big money on eBay. At some point, you are buying the slab and not the coin anyway... I know there is a lot more to it. I do agree with you. Buying cost effective graded examples is a good idea to compare your coins before deciding to send others off to grading companies.

I have seen some of the strangest newer coins that were sent in for grading that got between 60 and 65 and wondered why someone would pay more than the coin was worth to get the grade. The potential dollar signs and hype seem to cause partial blindness with some collectors.

lol. The coins I get graded are sometimes a joke to some. I don't always send gems in, just coins I want slabbed. I had a common Morgan slabbed because it was from my Grand dad. Two of the last coins I sent in, were valued at $45 each according to PCGS. Not worth much, but coins I like personally. I also send in a Proof now and then and try to get a 70 grade. It is a crap shoot and just a game to me. The grading process and the wait is fun when getting coins graded; that is why coin collecting is fun in my world.. Peace and thank Daniel.

I'd send it but I don't have the expertise to clean it nor can I imagine it being over a 50 much less bring 3k I think 3 hundred bucks would be perfect like it is as I can see a nice long scratch on the obverse through the dirt. The slanted ell is visible using my old jeweler's loop on the reverse. What's a rookie to do besides learn how to make good pictures and stick it on eBay starting at 99 cent's free shipping. 9 Eastern Saturday night would be perfect. Thanks buddy for your help with coin's even if the cleaning video doesn't give me any confidence like you have. If you did the curative work having your experience with coins. I understand that an un-circulated coin with railroad tracks, bag marks, chatter, contact marks, etc., will take away from the MS grade (60-70). However, does a weak strike due to die fatigue/wear lesson the mint state grade as well? Weak strike die fatigue/wear is NOT circulation wear, so one would think it would not count against the coin. Thoughts?

Sometimes I can see a 69 from a 70. Sometimes not so much. It is easier to see and self grade an 1857 cent in EF-45 from one that's a 50, so I operate in those places. Picking a 70 is guesswork. I sometimes think in the future it may lose it's appeal to collectors. It has to me, an MS-69 is great.

That’s ridiculous to me that the toned Jefferson graded less and looked stunning in comparison to the prior one that graded higher. I’m sure most graders are very precise to ensure the grade the coin deserves by their companies standards. Hearing about this happening more often makes me very hesitant to pay the total amount of fees charged and end up with an employee who has everything EXCEPT my coin on their minds instead of the grade the coin deserves and MY personal expenses. I’m 50/50 for my choice to grade or not but I’d definitely grade a rare error, variety or low mintage coins. Better investment for me.

Someday they'll have a 3D-scanning device with fine enough resolution that an AI will be able to grade coins, it may even already exist. Now to train the AI...

ANACS just doesn’t carry any weight to pay a high premium price.
@TruthLivesNow
@TruthLivesNow 4 жыл бұрын
If the price was $260 for the ANACS as a MS-63, and the same grade was $300 for the PCGS, which would you choose, if they looked the same. I do get your point.

Truth Lives Unfortunately, due to them being in different holders the PCGS one will be more expensive. It’s like when people buy generic, it’s the exact same thing but people pay more because they think it’s better. It just carries much more weight.

You know if I sent a coin in thinking it was a certain double die for example and it was something totally different, PCGS would just tell me that I was wrong and send my coin back not telling me how I was wrong or telling me what the coin I sent in really was. Perhaps they think Im going to send it in again with another guess, until I finally get it right. I dont think so !!! Homey dont play dat. I mean, if I am good enough to send them good people my coin plus the money to have it graded . I think that should entitle me to an explanation of my coin and if it is something different they should at least tell me what it really is and make me send it in again . But even that is being too greedy in my book sure they have to make money but that dont mean they should be raping the members of their own club, because you have to become a member before you can even submit a coin . And then they are going to rape you like that? I dont think that I want to be a member of a club like that . Because Homey really dont play dat. The more I lean about this the more it looks like a who you know operation . Now you take in a coin and then let someone that they know personally and I will bet that he gets a better grade than you do. Now tell me are all three grading companies having so close of ties that if one company says your coin is fake then your name goes in as trying to pass off a fake coin?? Or what is their policy ? Now I am not nor will I ever try to pass off any coin or bill that I know is fake. Because that is fraud and not only is it illegal but it just aint right lying to people and misrepresenting something that you know isnt what you say or think that it is.

Just send you coin to someone at CONECA, once they tell you what you have or don't have, then you check with PCGS or NGC and see if they have it listed on their price guide. If they do they will label it, if they don't they wont. It's so easy to avoid your issue.

Yeah, sort of..I get hyphens or one cent, might get a dollar for it..ppffttt... I just like to collecting them ..I don't know much about them, I got a 1955 canadain penny..KZbin telling me it's worth thousands of dollars..then I find out it's gotta be mint or shoulder/ unshorlder.. I mean ifshe dies, maybe the colour won't matter..I looked it up its worth one cent..hahahahaha..when I look stuff up, it's fairly confusing if a person don't understand what they r looking at..but no matter I still like the coins..I did look up the silver dollar..it's worth maybe hundred bucks..it's so woren..its World War One..brought back from the war, handed down from generation till now,...so I think it's all on the collecter..I obviously have to do more research, and don't know much about it..but I am learning from u guys..thx fir your time
