Just a quick video on how to get your Substance Painter PBR textures to work with V-Ray renderer. I am using 3DS Max 2018, but the process for Maya and other programs should be similar. No plugins are needed for this to work.

*NOTE* The reason for not needing the height map at the material level is because it is used instead in a VRayDisplacementMod modifier applied to the model.

Hey thank you so much for this!! I spent about 2 days trying to find a renderer which can make the same results. I've tried Arnold in Maya, I've trid Keyshot and always something has missed. Thanks a lot

Working in 2024 thanks bro i just had to make that vray option export in substante painter by myself. I guess adobe substance painter changed so i had to do by myself. Although i dont see textures exactly like i do in substante painter but well. No idea how to fix that

UPDATE: Haha and literally a day later, Chaos Group announces V-Ray Next for 3DS Max. They have added a new Metalness option directly inside of VRayMtl so probably makes this unnecessary. It should still apply to versions 3.6 and lower.

Great video- thank you!! So... no mapping is required at all when you apply the materials? Did you have to prepare the geometry at all prior to applying the material you made?

Hey thanks Chris! Yes I believe I unwrapped it. I think things are different with the new substance painter version, but in this video I had unwrapped it first.

very big help, thank you! i follow and everything worked out, except that my reflection is reflecting too much. I have a bit varnished of a wood that i made in substance, and in max without the reflection map its not reflecting any light and with the reflection its similar to a metallic reflection. Do you know some solution to this?

thank you, i think i solved it - the problem was with the lighting, i messed around with vray's options before that and this caused the bad reflection. Thanks for the fast reply and I subbed

@@MANIAKRA you know I am learning mastering in 3ds max 2017 but substance painter I am learning it ... but compared to your tutorial I now find myself with different options and to be honest I got lost and a lot of the indications are unknown to me and I don't know how to do it .. think I went to bring back the software to the previous versions but it made me annoying and I think it is a bag of the new version but I am really amazed at the simplicity of how I had thanks to your explanation of the steps forward ... if you can and have time so you can understand ... thank you in advance

but the latest SP do not have direct support for exporting PBR maps that working with Vray 3.6...

Hi, i have a transparent bottle model textures with opacity channel in substance painter...how do i export the opacity map to work with vray...please let me know,any help would be greatly appreciated thanks

Hi, in Substance Painter try going to File > Export Textures > Configuration Tab > Duplicate your current shader preset (like PBR MetalRough) and add an Opacity channel output map to the list. This new preset you make should create an opacity map. Then inside V-Ray, just plug in your opacity map into the Opacity slot in VrayMTL. Thanks a lot mate! Can you tell me the reason why the gamma has to be overwritten? (Might be a stupid question but I have almost no experience with shading)

Hey man, np. I'm not entirely sure why we have to do this but it's either to do with turning the textures into a linear-colour space (in general you want to work in linear for rendering) or it has to do with how substance exports textures. The substance painter manual recommends these steps though.

Hi there, thanks! The VRAY export preset is default for substance painter. You should have it already :D

how do you get a node editor for Vray materials?

Go to material editor, at the top left of the pop-up window you should see "Modes" from there select "Slate Material Editor". By default it's set to Compact Editor but I don't like it :) If you have Vray purchased and installed it will show up there.

@@MANIAKRA no i dont see any option saying modes. in the material editor window, i see the sphere preview of the material, then under that it says "preset" and "custom" then it lists all the channels. thats it.

Put a VRayDisplacementMod modifier on your model, then link to height map.

Substance doesn't export textures that way any more. No Ior map etc
