I live in a remote location, My parents didn't pass school to year 10, My nearest high school is more than 50km away, the unemployment rate in my council area is 10% above the national average. My school is below average on ATAR. Cast the net any way you like to identify disadvantage, but leave race out of it if you want to avoid division and sowing racism.

I read your comments, Kerry’s, and I identify with some of the disadvantages that you outline. But I don’t think The Voice is about race. It is about our First Australians because, no matter which way you cut it, they ,as a whole, represent some the most disadvantaged people in the country. So The Closing the Gap report was commissioned. We are no closer to closing the gap. So The Voice is their response to this terrible problem.

A wonderful statement Wesley. There are many indigenous Australians who have made a fantastic contribution to the Australasian way of life, to the economy, the arts, music and sport etc.. Many are not disadvantaged so to categorize then as such in one general racial groping is disingenuous. We need to clearly identify those Australians (not just the indigenous) in most need and the issues that most affect them in order to "bridge the gap". In that regard I believe that regional voices are essential so that specific issues can be clearly targeted and addressed.
@anthonycarr7466
@anthonycarr7466 Жыл бұрын
In reply Chris, I need to point out a couple of things in relation to your comments. First, we are in agreement about fantastic contributions made by thousands of indigenous Australians to our country. No one is disputing that. However, Governments have made promises to close these gaps but nothing has changed. So the focus has necessarily been on those who struggle and are most vulnerable. And you mention regional voices. The Voice advisory group will include people from regional and remote areas. So I reckon we are in furious agreement. And I’m voting Yes!

@@anthonycarr7466The Aborigines themselves have an obligation to close the 'gap' by choosing a lifestyle that is conducive to the promotion of good health and longevity. For example, the traditional lifestyle of sleeping on the ground next to dogs for warmth is not conducive to good health. Similarly, not practicing Western-style personal hygiene causes trachoma in the eyes which has high potential to cause blindness. Similarly, acceptable social behaviour and compliance with the rule of law is the responsibility of the individual irrespective of race. The use of illicit drugs, sniffing petrol, etc, reduces life expectancy of a person irrespective of race. Contrary to the widespread misconception, death of Aborigines in Police custody is proportionally lower than of non-Aborigines. The statistics include deaths as a result of car chases by police, and also include deaths of persons who have been placed in the police lockups and vans not for crimes but for protection while waiting for medical treatment after the police found them lieing in the street sometimes unconscious, sometimes severely beaten by fellow Aborigines, etc. So, the police are doing these individuals a great favour by putting them in lockups for their own safety while waiting for medical assistance; and the police should not be blamed if the individual dies while in this so-called 'police custody' the purpose of which is to assist the individual who is in difficulty and danger. Excluding billions of dollars of royalty received from mining companies such as Rio Tinto, the Aborigines are also receiving well over $30 BILLION each and every year from the Australian State and Federal Governments (i.e. the Australian taxpayers). However, the vast majority of this money is going into the pockets of the corrupt Aboriginal 'elders' who do not distribute the funds fairly among the disadvantaged Aborigines, but the moneys are either embezelled or used to pay enormous salaries to CEOs of Aboriginal Corporations which in many cases are higher than the salary of the Prime Minister of Australia. Much more can be said about the corruption of the Aborigine 'elders' who misappropriate royalties and funds received from the Australian Federal and State Governments.

Your statement is absolutely correct. There is no 'indigenous disadvantage' in the cities - on the contrary, many are very rich or at least 'well off'. What we are going through now with the likes of Langton, Pearson, Mayo, Reid, Burney and Thorpe detracts from the real issues and simply fuels hatred - for what? They have their own agenda and it is NOT to help the disadvantaged aboriginal. Aboriginals own 50% of Australia and receive $33 billion per year. They also receive twice the government expenditure that non-indigenous and more political representation. In the cities the children have the same opportunities as any other. Out bush is where the story changes. I have no answer for the likes of Alice Springs which is a disaster, of course. I think the greatest problem is the drug and alcohol abuse. That is a tough issue for any ethnic group. The more so for those who are unemployed and have no reason to get up in the morning and who rely on government handouts. Addressing those issues may lead to a better situation Civil strife and racism will not.

I have reached very similar conclusions to-date based on my own life experiences. I’m 61 y.o, non-indigenous, raised in Melbourne. We are simply and obviously all definitely made of the same stuff. Access to education and opportunities makes an enormous difference. My parents didn’t attend high school and I was sent to work on completing high school while friends had teachers for parents and went straight through to university. I expect it will take generations of better/accelerated access to health and education services for isolated families to close gaps. I’m unsure if all people want to make this change in their lives, but I hope that it can be facilitated somehow for their children’s best future. Additionally, and sadly, for practical reasons I suspect that living in very remote communities will continue to have a great price attached to it.

One way to start this would be to do a full and independent audit of where the billions have gone and who benefitted and who didn't check on that. A full spectrum of support and then some should already be available as the funding directed towards Aboriginal issues is above and beyond what that group has access to as part of the funding that goes to the 96.5% of Australians. A statement from the head certainly has a logic to it that the divisive "Heart" version simply lacks. We either need to get rid of the race classification altogether or set up an instrument that classifies race (Aboriginal or Non) accurately and which does not accept small percentages as sufficient to confirm the whole. As it currently stands, a lot of the funding must be supporting and must have been drained off by "Identifier" Australians who in truth are as "White (whatever that really means)" as a a whole bunch of us. I still believe that most Ozzies like to operate within the boundaries of "A fair go for all" and this push for a divisive "VOICE" doesn't sit well with that.

I do believe we have to help the ones in remote areas as well like supporting rural communities. But locking up land right areas and locking all non indigenous out isolates people. Much of these areas I have had the pleasure to visit in N.T and Kimberley's this also proved to me there is no one culture. The best way to me to help these people is to open up the area empower the communities to build infrastructure and tourism selling accessibility to learn and share the culture. But how the land holders hold the land must change we must allow locals to own there house and land and business as Tourism needs infrastructure same as the communities. There must be a total rethink about how we can become all 1 nation of many nations. The land grab must stop and the High court's must rethink decisions to promote harmony.

Disadvantaged Australians generally are that way because of a decades old deliberate policy of unemployment and underemployment. Constant high immigration levels means that both unemployment and hidden unemployment remain high meaning that disadvantaged Australians including Indigenous Australians are unable to get secure and well paid jobs. So what does Australian society do? Instead of recognising the elephant in the room, they resort to blaming and humiliating the unemployed forcing them to apply and look for non existent jobs. Giving them inadaquate social security payments and putting them through humiliating activity tests. To say that high immigration levels do not affect employment levels is a deliberate lie and needs to be called out for what it is.
