I understand that people say "Always be yourself when u perform". But honestly if I were to play Nathan Detroit, I would really wanna do it exactly how Nathan Lane did. He killed it

I believe that in his heart he knew that was HIS role. There’s a reason he changed his professional name to Nathan.

I just auditioned for Nathan Detroit and took inspiration from Nathan Lane’s performance; it landed me the role :).

Always be yourself. Unless you can be Nathan Lane. Be Nathan Lane.

Saw this on Broadway with Nathan and Faith in 1992, sheer perfection. I have been lucky enough to see Nathan perform from high school he grew up close by. We knew he would be famous. Faith embodies Adelaide.

Fun fact, Nathan Lane did this role in a smaller production very early in his career, and was the reason he picked the name Nathan when he joined Equity!

I watched a cast reunion on zoom from a couple of years ago (it's on YT), and Faith Prince said that during rehearsals it was Nathan's idea for her to really whack him with her purse. His comic instincts are impeccable.

I love how people start clapping and cheering in the middle of the song, both Nathan and Faith did an amazing performance. They're both amazing :)

They both won the Tony for this, unreal performance

Nathan didn’t, unfortunately. He was nominated but Faith Prince did win.

Well, there's two of the greats! I had the great good fortune to see Nathan Lane (along with Matthew Broderick) in The Producers. This guy is amazing. And Faith Prince is probably the best Adelaide ever.

I never knew this song could be so funny! :D Half the time I'm cooing "oh no, precious babies" and the other half I'm wheezing with laughter. This is gold!
@brersam94737 жыл бұрын
that was really confusing?
@tomshea83823 жыл бұрын
@@brersam9473 It's very well-staged. The three degrees of "I could honestly die" are eventually really touching, which is a place this number doesn't really need to go, but it works with her next scene, and is totally earned.

I wonder how many realize that Nathan, and the majority of his co-horts and the other gangster types are mostly Jewish (certainly not Sky Masterson, but Big Julie, Harry the Horse, Benny Southstreet, etc.) And in this song, it's "So, Nu...", not "So, new..." as many think. Nu is a yiddishism which is kind of an interjection as a transition in a conversation--kind of like 'well' or 'annnd' or 'soooo'.

EvenEvenOdd Um, no, that's a huge part of what makes Faith's Adelaide so special. She really soaks in the comedy, and most importantly, the humanity of what's going on. This is perfection.

Nathan is is fantastic. Is so underrated in Hollywood, it's a shame. I Love mouse hunt, the birdcage, A Funny Thing happened in the forum, the nance, The front page, The iceman cometh or Angels in America. And rencently is awesome in TV show Penny dreadful : City of angels.

Ironically, Nathan's simple, almost childish part in this duet was written specifically for the limited vocal range of the great Sam Levene, the original Broadway show's Nathan Detroit, who couldn't sing at all but was so perfect in the role's character.

In this scene, after being strung along for fourteen years of excuses and broken promises by Nathan Detroit for them to get married, Adelaide truly believes that they are about to elope out of town to get married, so she has gotten her hair done and is wearing her very best outfit for this momentous, long-awaited occasion.
