mysenseofhumor90 You can say slavery is wrong and are demonstably correct, proof of it is inherant in anyone with a basic moral compass, saying all men are violent and only respond/respect violence is demonstrably untrue and the sexism involved in making such a comment is off the charts frankly... At least I assume you are comparing the two when the two are not comparable, 1 is true the other is not by almost all forms of measurement.

+Rachel Caroline Deacons I am a man that supports women's rights...but what about the influential black suffragettes who worked hand in hand with Mary Eliza Church Terrell? Im talking about Ida B. Wells, Sojourner Truth, Mary Ann Shadd Cary? I did not see them in the trailer, maybe they'll be in the movie.....but in the meanwhile let us please remember their heroic sacrifice as well.
@TheMightyFiction
@TheMightyFiction 8 жыл бұрын
+Rachel Caroline Deacons _I just said I was grateful to ALL woman who fought for women's suffrage, suffragist and suffragette alike._ Not the suffragists who were men, then. Or those pro-suffrage members of Parliament who got the legislation passed. Right. _Also, do some research! 80,000 women took part in WW1 while the rest stayed in England and kept the country going._ Funny story, those women would have been entitled to vote because they offered military service. !D _It wasn't just suffragettes that shamed men into going to war, other men did as well._ And both used the disapproval of women to shame unenfranchised boys and men into going to war. That was the point you see; they had the right to vote, so suffragettes expected them to earn it (even if they actually didn't have it, because the registration age was 21). There are even anecdotal reports of women using the White Feather campaign to get rid of unwanted boyfriends. _It was considered cowardly not to join the war effort. I'm not saying that was right but that's just how it was._ I see. Women not having a right men were expected to bleed and die for was an injustice, but shaming fifteen-year-old boys into shipping overseas and being cut down by machine gun fire before they've even got a chance to use their first vote was 'just how it was.'
@TheMightyFiction
@TheMightyFiction 8 жыл бұрын
+Rachel Caroline Deacons _I disagree with you. The men in power would never have handed over the vote to women freely or without a fight. The suffragettes gave them that fight._ The men in power wouldn't have 'handed over' the vote because women didn't want it. There was a significant anti-suffrage movement of women who didn't want to be subject to paying taxes, didn't want the obligation of military service, didn't want to give up their non-partisan social influence, didn't want to assume accountability for the conduct of the State, and in short, they didn't want the civic responsibilities that went with Parliamentary enfranchisement when men registered for it. If you are assuming a general consensus of women who were all clamoring for the vote, there wasn't one, even amongst the Suffragettes. The WSPU supported the property qualifications and split with the Labour Party when they came out in favor of universal suffrage, presumably because increasing the working class electorate might lead to the possible election of politicians backed by unions and weaken the influence of the middle-class vote. Pankhurst's success was in convincing working class women to be rank-and-file cannon fodder for women's rights she never intended them to have.
@TheMightyFiction
@TheMightyFiction 8 жыл бұрын
***** I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you didn't do that on purpose. There were no male suffragettes; the Pankhursts didn't admit men to the WSPU. Actually, to be fair, Sylvia did at the East London branch which she ran in more democratic fashion, and this was part of the cause of the family rift that led to her breaking away from her mother and sister and forming the ELFS (East London Federation of Suffragettes).

I am only a young girl with an incredibly feministic mother which has resulted in me being the same. I watched this movie a few days ago and was completely inspired by what these amazing and brave women did all those years ago. I will forever be grateful for the sacrifice they made so that girls like me can vote and get an education. I don't think what they did has been recognised enough. Remember, if you ever have a dream, or a vision or even the spark of an idea, just think: These great women were considered crazy and there dreams deemed impossible. Now look what they have created. Don't ever give up. Never surrender, never give up the fight.

Movie's like this always look so amazing, but everyone trashes them because they think it's just women trying to make a fuss about things that are long gone. This movie looks awesome, it will probably be awesome but the critics will trash it anyways.

+PureGOOD Evil " but everyone trashes them because they think it's just women trying to make a fuss about things that are long gone." Actually people trash these kinds of movies because they are revisionist propaganda :| I'd be willing to bet anything you'd like that most people posting on these comments have no idea that men and women got the vote at generally the same time. More than 50% of the men that fought in WW1 for instance were not allowed to vote for example. And yet they were taken from their homes and forced to go die. Not only was the suffragette movement deeply racist (you can easily find famous quotes using google) they also created the white feather campaign, shaming men and often young boys to enlist and die. But you won't see this being portrayed, because you're not supposed to know that. That is why people trash this, it's not only an innacurate portrayal of history but it also seems to be deliberately lying... and it presents us, the public with absolutely sexist gems like "Cause war is the only language men listen to". It seems that the truth that everyone had a shitty life and it gradually got better as societies evolved is not welcome. Instead "teh womyn" were "oppressed" by the nasty "evil men" is the narrative that people like to hear.
@puregoodevil1084
@puregoodevil1084 9 жыл бұрын
You're right everything got better as time evolved and its not fair that the men were forced to go off to war and die without a say in their government. But women really didn't have any rights at all i think was more of the point here. it was even quoted in the movie "you're a wife my wife, that's what you're meant to be" it also isn't fair that women were treated as inferior. Their are lots of movies portraying the cruelty of forcing men to go to war and die for either a cause they don't understand or without a say in the government. They're are none for the women suffrage, how many historical movies have been accurately portrayed down to every little nuance? i'm not saying we are oppressed now i'm not saying the men were bad and terible back then. It was just the social norm back then to see things like that: women as inferior, men to give their lives for their country. Sadly even the racism was a social norm (as much as i hate to say it or think it). But it's not like that today, (at least the equality among genders- and when i say that i mean first world country third world ones are still having problems). Point is to make the social change happen women had to do crazy things. We can argue about it later say it's a false interpretation; but you can't alter the past. The movie is coming out, women suffrage happened, we can vote. Nothing is ever black and white, and my honest reason for wanting to see this movie as a female: it looks cool, they're not just sitting aback their taking action. In that time period that's pretty daring in itself (excluding the violence). And yes I say power to the females! Because you know what why not? It's a freaking hollywood movie, ewveryone will forget about it in a year.

+Kelly Martin, You mean like the fact that working class men got the vote AFTER women? Or that women forced men to fight in the trenches by handing them a white flower, a symbol of cowardice? Or that men died early from working down coal mines just to support their family? Or that it was ultimately men who gave women the right to vote, not the actions of the suffregettes? Or the fact that many suffragettes were members of the BUF (British Union of Fascists)? Or that almost a million British men died in the trenches over nothing? You view history from only a female perspective, no different than viewing history from only a male persepective, how is that equal? Both men and women suffered back then, not just women, you're part of the problem not the solution, we need equality, no man-hating.

For those saying "Real FEMINISTS" or "Terrorists" = F.U. This is HISTORY. This is what women had to do to get A FREAKING RIGHT! How can you dare to talk trash about women who literally had to FIGHT for freedom. Why don't you talk like that when there is any movie about a war or men fight for something for independence or freedom. Sure, that's "OK" cause they are "men". This movie shows what women had to do, during that time, to be heard. HOW DARE YOU! You don't freaking know how it is to be less of a human being cause you just "don't deserve" the same rights as men. They were not terrorists, it was a fight. "Real feminists" are the ones fighting for equality, we are not agressive, we are just fed up. Violences is NOT a solution but this is what had to be done BACK THEN. Learn the difference. Learn history. Learn what "feminism" is about. And try to walk in our shoes for once.

What happened to the more peaceful suffragists? Everybody forgets about them, they fought just as hard. The only reason the suffragettes have a more popular standing is because they used more violent tactics. They both got the vote, not one over the other. In the end I believe the suffragists did more in the suffrage movement. But no? Because they didn't fire bomb churches, that's no way near as interesting. When you ask people which form of protest is better, most will say non violent. And give Gandhi as an example. What happened to the suffragists??? Please Google them.

Adam Pond While violence is not something anyone should wish for, women spoke out peacefully for decades and decades without being heard. When peaceful means fail, the oppressed must turn to violence in order to be seen, and for their movement to be given notice. The world cannot be viewed accurately through rose-colored glasses; this is the reality. Violence was necessary in the Indian Independence movement, the American Civil Rights movement, and countless others as well. We simply prefer to ignore those aspects and focus on the large, peaceful parts of those movements. But I guarantee you, without law breaking and some measure of violence, change would never have occurred.

Emily Montague Yes, yes, every single last man on the planet had the vote, even in Russia, even Islamic countries and were evilly oppressing the men. Especially all those men dying in the trenches of WWI; every single last one of them could vote, that's why they were dying. They voted eagerly on the politicians going, "Yay! WAR!" Why, they kept the glory of dying on the battlefield away from women, the evil oppressors! No matter how often feminists have screamed for the past 150 years, "Force us women to die on the battlefield, god damnit!" they still aren't being forced to go into military service. I wonder why they haven't started firebombing stuff while demanded the duty to die decades ago. Hmm.
