Chris Schenkel doing boxing again after Cosell had taken that spot from him at ABC in the mid 60's. I knew him best as the host of the ABC Saturday bowling coverage, but found out as an adult he was the pbp in some of the biggest college football games and the NBA Finals back in the day. RIP.

Shocked watching this at the time as nobody expected SRL to have any trouble with Howard. Second shock was him retiring again straght after, which was an overreaction from Leonard. He had unrealistic expectations as to how he'd perform after the eye problems and the 27 months off. Yes, his timing and reflexes were off, he got dropped and tagged too often, but he picked a decent fighter who was super-motivated to get the opportunity to fight a great ex-Champion with a massive media profile. He was overconfident and should have taken on a more limited opponent for his comeback, THEN took on someone like Howard. I think he was embarrassed by his performance against Howard and it knocked his confidence, hence the retirement. Consequently he missed out on a large section of his prime by not fighting again until 1987, almost 3 years later. For the record I thought the 2 judges were way off on their scoring, the referee was probably correct, with Leonard a point up after 8. The stoppage was a little premature, though Howard was clearly wearing down from round 8. It was rather the timing of the stoppage, as Leonard had missed a few shots when the ref dived in. A few seconds earlier and there probably would be few complaints.

Ray has said it multiple times, that his strategy was to get a less than 100% Duran in the ring. Duran's training had no sparring or working on strategy....it was all about getting to weight and he did, but by the time he got in the ring, it started to fall apart. Duran had no legs, no strength because of losing all that weight so fast. Panama Lewis swears Duran quit because he had to take a big dump. Was Leonard supposed to move DOWN to fight Pryor? There were plenty of 147 pounders Pryor could have moved up and fought in the 1980s…Curry, Starling, McCrory, Honeyghan, Duran, Benitez, Hearns…the smaller man has to come up in weight and take the challenge. @@blite13 Leonard had every intention of fighting Hagler. His step up to 154 in 1981 was in preparation for an eventual move to 160. He suffered a detached retina. 1972 Olympic gold medalist Sugar Ray Seales fought on with detached retinas + went legally blind. That's why SRL retired in 1982. He aborted his comeback in 1984 due to imo overreacting to a bad performance in the Howard fight. Over the next couple of years he changed his mind. Maybe part of that was seeing Hagler struggle against Mugabi, but let's not forget nobody gave him a chance when they fought in 1987. Hagler was undisputed champion on a long run of wins, was hardly an old man at 32 + Leonard had fought once in 5 years, getting dropped by the ordinary Howard + had never fought at 160. I remember clearly at the time that everyone thought Hagler would kill him. Leonard was a smart operator outside the ring but you obviously just don't like him. Between 1979-1981 he fought Benitez, Duran twice, Kalule + Hearns, an unprecedented run of hard fights. He then steps up against the pound for pound #1 in the world, in Hagler. The guy ducked nobody. He was a great champion + top-tier competitor.

@@johnniea4684 Ray took the 1st Duran fight, thinking Duran was finished, Kalule was not much of a threat. Ray was losing to Tommy when Tommy's legs gave out. Tommy weighed in, the morning of the fight, at 145lbs. He was over trained and it cost him that fight. By the time Ray fought Hagler, Marvin was well past his prime and his legs were gone. Ray cherry picked and those who aren't blinded by fandom, can see he is over rated.

@@blite13 First off, I respect Leonard for his ability and achievements, but he was never a favourite fighter of mine. i disliked the way he fought the second Duran fight and I was rooting for Hagler in their fight, so you have no idea what you're talking about. I'm not "blinded by fandom", as I'm not a fan. You, however, as you've shown in this exchange so far are coloured by a dislike of him. Examples; #1: How was Duran finished for the first fight? Please explain you're reasoning here. He hadn't lost a fight in almost 8 years and had moved up to 147 as Undisputed Lightweight champion. He had just turned 29 and was probably at his peak. #2: Kalule. Leonard wanted to win a light middleweight title whilst waiting to unify at 147 vs Hearns. Kalule was 36-0 and had made 4 title defences prior to fighting Leonard. The only alternative, WBC champ Maurice Hope priced himself out of the fight, so who else was Leonard supposed to challenge? #3 Hearns. Overtrained? You're confusing the Leonard fight with the Hagler fight, after which Emanuel Steward claimed a pre-fight massage had taken something out of Hearns' legs. I've never heard Hearns or Steward say anything about him being overtrained. Hearns was slightly up on the judges' cards after 13 rounds, but he was unable to finish the 15 rounds distance, so it's irrelevant. Regardless, how is Leonard responsible for Hearns' training? #4 Hagler: I've already addressed your claims on this, which you've ignored, instead just repeating yourself. Hagler was Undisputed Middleweight champion and was unbeaten in 11 years when he fought Leonard. Yes, he had trouble with the undefeated puncher Mugabi, but still knocked him out in making his 11th defence. Leonard, meanwhile had fought once in 5 years (looking bad in a win), had never fought at 160. Hagler opened as a 4-1 favourite, down to 3-1 by the day of the fight. I remember the lead up to the fight very well and almost nobody picked Leonard to win, including me. And yes, I'd watched Hagler-Mugabi. Most thought Hagler would go after him as he had vs Hearns and win inside the distance. You forgot to take any credit away from him for beating Benitez btw. After all, Benitez only trained 3 days for the fight.

Leonard needs to be berated for this overreaching and pretentious display of pugilism. He wanted to be like Michael but all that Koque from 7up messed up his medulla oblongata.

Chris Schenkel was terrible in this fight in round 5 he said Ray was flatfooted and not on his toes... as he was on his toes and bouncing. He gave Ray no credit the whole fight!! AWFUL HE WAS!!

commentator was a biased fool. Turn the sound off and watch.Kevin won 2,3,4,5 and 8. 8 was close. Good call by ref.Kevin stopped his rht cross after the 5th.he threw 1 with authority in 6,7,8. He was either unfit or they may have been given a proposition between 5 and 6, ha.Leonard should consider himself lucky that Kevin never let his hands go,a lack of confidence.Leonard was 1 of the best, he did not need to be gifted the Hagler fight or the Hearns draw.Hagler and Hearns got robbed because of his popularity.
