The Showdown! September 16, 1981 Caesars Palace Las Vegas, Nevada Sugar Ray Leonard vs Thomas “motor city cobra” Hearns for the undisputed WELTERWEIGHT championship of the World! What a fabulous night of boxing. There was a great undercard. The atmosphere at the site was amazing and the atmosphere where I watched on CCTV was equally fantastic. The crowd was split maybe 50% Leonard and 45% Hearns and 5% just wanting to see a great show. Oh what a night…I recognize that it might be cheaper to have a few guys chip in for PPV at home but IMO it doesn’t have a electricity of that special night: 10,000 fight fans all gathered in one place for one special event. The ebbs and flows, the back and forths were absolutely riveting! Ray finally had a little bit more of what made him great and he prevailed. Hearns was magnificent…even in an ultimately losing effort I think that was his finest overall performance in his career. Given a do over I suspect he’d like to have not been so light. 145 at the weigh in suggests to me he may have been a bit overtrained. But it was a fabulous event and Ray and Thomas gave us a thrill that those of us who were there will always remember

No 80s was an era without the internet, and you couldn't be in a boxers face all day on social media, projecting your opinion every 5 seconds. Where you have 24 hour access to videos like this to make comments, where in order to make money now a days to promote at fight, boxers have to go onto dumb podcasts and talk shit all year long. 80s only felt legendary. As you had no choice but to either watch the press shows that came at like 10pm for the fight. And they promoted like a total of 3 times before the fight on TV. You had to sit and wait for the fight all night. Or sit at a bar..... Boxers are still boxers my dude it is how you consume media that has changed. Still 2 guys in a ring punching each other in the face for your entertainment
