I definitely bought all the doomering about the inevitable DeSantis Presidency, how he's an actual skilled politician who can do fascism efficiently, he's not an embarrassing idiot like Trump, and so on back in 2021. Then I actually saw him and heard him talk. He's a total pod person, he makes Ted Cruz look charismatic and likeable. I will say that he would have been a lot scarier in, let's say, the mid 2000s or so. But in 2023, the type of voter that shows up for a Republican primary already has their dude, and it's Trump. And yeah, running for the nomination in this cycle is an intelligence test. DeSantis could have just chilled, signed some more horrible bills into law, done some softball interviews as "America's Governor" on Fox News, probably written a crappy book or two, done speaking tours, and gone into 2028 in a stronger position. Instead he gets to have his political career destroyed by Donald Trump lol.
