I’ve had type 2 diabetes for 8 years now, when I was first diagnosed my A1C was 10 and I weighed 148 am 5,3! My doctor also prescribed metformin 500mg twice a day, on my 3 month checkup my A1C was 5.9 and I weighed 122 pounds only on metformin and eating right! 8 years later my A1C went up a little to 6.2 but my weight stayed pretty much the same well 125. You have to watch what you eat, the cards and sugars are your enemies well if you consume a lot of it. You can eat whatever you want in MODERATION that is the key here and also don’t consume too much food in one meal keep it light and wait at least 3 hours to have a snack and by snack I mean an apple strawberries any berries almonds without all that sugar or salt you get it and also read the labels on what you are drinking there is a lot of sugar and cards in just your drink alone, so between your meal drink appetizer etc you probably just went wayyyy over your calorie and carb and sugar count for the day and now you can’t eat till tomorrow again Lol anyway the fasting will do you good. You will be surprised at how you look and feel when you take most of the sugars carbs and calories out of your meals. eat lots of whole grains FIBER it keeps you regular veggies and fruits, nuts and protein and you will feel better. I wish you guys all the best and keep a good attitude about this disease and learn to manage it bc if you don’t learn to control this disease it will control you, and that’s when all your problems begin! Sorry this was soo long!!!

It's good you follow a diet plan - don't eat this, don't eat that. But that can be very tedious to follow in real life situations. I was told by a lady the #1 thing to always remember, is to after you have a meal about 30 minutes, take a good walk or become physically active for 30 minutes. Break a sweat if you have to. And learn to do this after every meal. This simple practice will always keep you in the center from getting high or low sugar. The lady told me it is more effective than what you eat. Because not everyone can follow a food list. It is too difficult to maintain such a rigid program. So how she controls her diabetes, is being physically active after she eat. Simple Rule - Never sit down or lay down after you eat. That is a big NO NO. What are your thoughts?

My mom was on Metformin from the time she was about 40 till she was almost 90. So I guess it worked for her. The doctors decided tho to switch her to something else at about 90 years of age. I don’t know why but it may have had something to do with her constant UTI’s. 🤔🤷🏼‍♀️ She lives in another state and my sister takes care of her. She is 91. We all visit her though etc. We love our sweet little Mamasita 🥰

UTIs are pretty common with elderly! Glad the med worked for your mum! My mum was on HRT for 30 yrs then a dr took her off it and she went down fast! Sometimes it’s best to leave elderly alone on what’s worked most of their life!

My doctor asked me if I'd like to try that newer drug that pretty much guaranteed the UTI's. It excretes excess sugar through your urine, and sugar in the urine passing over the vaginal opening, creates the UTI's. Having had a UTI twice, I said nope. I'm not going on any drug that's going to give me them! I've been on Metformin for nearly a decade.

She probably has interstitial cystitis and not uti's. Uti's come from poop bacteria and IC is inflammation in the bladder and urethra. You don't take antibiotics for it and it's really painful. Benadryl, aloe Vera tablets, apple cider vinegar and baking soda in water help neutralize the acidic environment in the bladder.

Metformin lowers B12 and can cause high lactic acid levels and induce lactic acidosis which happened to me twice. It didn't happen right away it was after being on it for a few years and I also had gastro issues from it constantly. Now I can't take any diabetic meds in the same category as metformin because they also induce lactic acidosis. And it caused neuropathy because my b12 levels were low for too long. I really wish drs would address these side effects with patients and really explain how important it is to change our diets instead of just pushing meds on people. Thank you for reading this.

I was diagnosed with diabetes April 11 after going into the hospital with a kidney stone..At the hospital, had a blood pressure of 220/115 and my blood sugar was at 390. My A1C level was 12.6. Was put on 500MG metformin twice day and 30 MG Pioglitizone once a day. I completely changed my diet. Have had ZERO negative side effects of Metformin. On August 1st (3 1/2 months later), my A1C was down to 5.6. I asked the doctor to take me off of Pioglitizone and I am currently testing this out now. I feel great and will get a new A1C update February of next year. In addition, I do the following EVERY DAY. I take a raw tblsp of extra virgin olive oil every morning, a tbsp of apple cider vinegar with water b4 every dinner and about 9 pm a cup of hibiscus tea with 1/2 tspn of cinnamon

Went on a gluten-free keto diet lifestyle, and I brought my glucose down to 80-90. There are better choices than meds. Eliminating processed food, sugar, enriched flour based foods, rice, and grains are foods that raise glucose. Protein and high fiber diets helped me drop 50 pounds in 6 months.

I have lost 18 lbs, drastically changed my eating habits which has not been easy but I just had my glucose test after 3 months and it went from 8.5 to 6.0 . Now I just have to maintain that on a daily basis. I am learning... exercising is a huge hurdle for me and I have challenged myself with a virtual challenge through walking, running, biking (indoor in my case) and learn about different areas of the world while exercising; it motivates me to exercise. I watch walking tours on KZbin and do some form of exercise ... exercises sitting in a chair is good too. Anything to get me moving. It's NOT easy and I can't say I do it every day, but my goal is to change that. I wish you all well.

@@natashasd9003 glimepiride. When I found out that with long term use it ruins the pancreas... I wasn't very happy about that. I read the side effects when it was prescribed but I never found anything about that, until hearing about it here on KZbin. I am going to try the time released metformin...and see if it doesn't make me so sick. My pharmacist told me when I mentioned to him my finding out about the damage that long term usage of glimepiride can do -- but that I wasn't sure what was meant by long term...2 or 3 years? He did say that although he was not sure...that often in medications...that long term is often like using one for 10 years...but he also said to take that with a grain of salt. Anyway, I want to look into supplements a little more to see if those, and more control of my sugar/carb intake can help me reduce or even quit the meds.

I stick to metformin. Its positive side effects is not fully understood yet, but it does seem to affect more than blood sugar. While it obviously has negative side effects, those are less relevant compared to the effect it has at lowering mortality rates compared to people without diabetes, meaning people who are unhealthy potentially live longer than the relatively more healthy. Of course, we do not fully understand the mechanics, but avoiding a drug that works seems silly, unless you are at risk for the worst side effects.

I've been eating LCHF for four months. I first avoided taking Metformin but I have now began to use it as a means of decreasing my morning glucagon production, which it appears to help if I eat an early meal before 12:00 pm and before my blood glucose rises above 5.5 mmol/l. I have experienced some hypoglycemic events when I take metformin with my evening meal, happening prior to waking which triggers my liver to produce glucagon. This of course is what the liver is supposed to do, but I prefer not to dip below 3.9 mmol/l, so I am avoiding evening use for now. So far I have not taken greater than one 500 mg dose at a time and no more than two 500 mg doses in a single day. I think the greater factor for me in controlling my blood sugar, has been the elimination of processed carbohydrates, sugars, starches and seed oils which has contributed to significant weight loss for me. Considering that Metformin aids in developing insulin sensitivity I look at it as a tool in my tool kit which helps me to be in controle of my own metabolic health. My experience is anecdotal and may not be the same for everyone. It is also an inexpensive drug that has a three year expiration date and for this reason I will continue to refill my prescriptions, in the event that supply line shortages should make it unavailable. For T2D's who have experienced remission from their disease by adopting a LCHF lifestyle, maintaining a reasonable supply of this drug might be life saving should food choices become less abundant. IMHO. Great podcast, thank you!

I've been prescribed Metformin. Yes. I've experienced Gastrointestinal issues. However, it controls my blood sugar when out-of-control. Anytime you deal with health issues and medical treatments. You must weigh the benefits vs the risks. The risks of high HgA1c certainly lead to kidney damage, eye damage, and heart damage. Which certainly outweighs risk of diarrhea, discomfort and potentially rare side effects. I will gladly trade it for upset stomach and diarrhea. My secret is to only use it very beginning of blood sugar spiking episodes temporarily for less than a week . I control my type 2 diabetes with exercise. Since Metformin disinhibits release of glycogen from liver to your body. Aerobic exercise disinhibits glycogen from converting to glucuse. I discontinue Metfomin after exercising and blood sugars return to normal. I dont really have high blood sugars often. Unless, I indulge. Which happens now and then. My HgA1c is usually between 5.7-6.2. Its best to mostly rely on proper diet and exercise.

My Metformin adventure started 8 weeks ago. My weight has dropped from 210lbs to 190lbs from Sept/22 to Nov/22. I'm not pre-diabetic, so I'm taking it off-label. Motivated after studying Dr. David Sinclair, (my son said we should be guinea pigs and do this experiment} taking Berberine, Resveratrol, NMN and practice regular intermittent fasting. He is doing it for longevity to live to 150 years. I am doing it NOT to extend my life but to reverse my biological age so that I have the cardiovascular performance, physiology and hormones of a 20 year old cyclist, yogi at the age of 100 years. I take Metformin rather than Berberine as Metformin is David Sinclair's first choice before Berberine. My target weight is to lose another 30lbs to get down to my college weight of 160 pounds over the next 3 months. I regularly fast and eat OMAD (one meal a day) and am active every day either cycling or yoga.

Drastic changes in what you eat and daily exercise are the two biggest things. My A1C was 11.1 in July 2022. I was put on Glipizide before meals and Metformin after meals twice a day. Along with changing my diet and exercise my A1C went down to 6.2 within 3 months. The doctor took me off Glipizide soon after because it was causing my blood sugar to get too low. A few months ago I started taking a Bitter-melon dietary supplement and I don’t take Metformin as much. It’s probably better if you eat actual bitter-melon. I’ve also added in an occasional soda and ice cream. My glucose level is still under 130 on most days. Average is 110-115. I’m just experimenting to see what works best for my body. My last A1C check was 6.3. If I exercised regularly and actually stuck to a strict diet, I think that I could get my A1C to under 6 easily.

My doctor told me that diarrhoea side effects can be cut out by reducing carbs in my diet. This has been my experience. Generally 'faster' sugars, pizza base, white bread, soda and fruit juices make for worse side effects. Low glycemic carbs like pasta and fruit especially berries don't have nearly as bad side effects. Metformin has been great for me and knowing what foods cause side effects made it easy for me to avoid side effects from the start. Just experiment with carb heavy foods. Being able to eat berries and pasta mean I'm not feeling deprived from carby treats.

Did you both try Metformin ER (extended release}? I had diarrhea too when I wasn't prescribed ER. I insisted on the doctor to prescribe ER. Invokana to my experience is a dangerous drug and I couldn't take it for more than few days.

Metformin can block the reabsorption of bile acids, in the large intestine (type 4 bile acid malabsorption). Having these acids in the faeces causes your body to expel them as rapidly as possible.

Metformin made me so sick as if I had morning sickness 24/7. So my doctor put me on the extended release and still no relief from the nausea. I lost weight but feeling sick all day was not a option anymore. We took me off of it and I am controlling it by diet only and some supplements. I am thankful I am not on it anymore. Love your videos and there is so much information on them. Thank you.

I was diagnosed with Type 2 about a month ago at the age of 28, I had an extreme pop/soda addiction and my diet was really bad. I also have Aortic Valve Stenosis, a heart defect I was born with. I am also a truck driver, and my health is directly tied to my job, if I can't pass a DOT Physical, I lose my job. I was put on Metformin and they gave me 3 months to get my A1C under control. About a month ago it was 10.4%. After following your advice and making some lifestyle changes I am coming in at 5.5% A1C and stable, and I occasionally cheat. I have also lost about 10 pounds. Thank you for making these videos and educating the public.

I was diagnosed with mucosal melanoma in April 2021. I am taking metformin to good effect. I had surgery and Opdivo and Yervoy but based on my tumor genetics, metformin was a good adjunct. I take time released 500 mg twice a day. My insulin is super low with the metformin plus my keto lifestyle. I started keto before diagnosis because of prediabetes, but only started metformin after my prediabetes was in remission and my tumor was genetically analyzed. I am currently in remission and hope to keep it that way. Daily exercise is also key to my health.

I'm type1. I got diagnosed in 2019. My a1c was 17 and my glucose was 232. I went from 235 lbs down to 165 in about 9 months. I also had diabetic ketoacidosis. Lost alot of the muscles I had. I was prescribed metformin( which is not typical for type 1). After taking it for a year or two I felt gastrointestinal issues. Stopped taking it. Felt better. It did help with blood sugar but wasn't worth having unexpected diarrhea on a daily basis. I stopped taking it with the doctors permission and had my insulin adjusted. Later on I found out that metformin is a "dirty" drug. In males it can cause birth defects within 3 months of trying to conceive. I'm glad I stopped taking it as I don't have children yet but want to in the future. I just did my research and did alot of trial and error. Kept what worked and tossed what didn't. Knowledge is power.

This is NOT a typo, I was diagnosed 4 years ago with a blood sugar reading of 134 and they basically told me I was going to die and couldn't believe I was still walking around. They put me on insulin injections, Metformin and another drug to stimulate the pancreas, can't think of the name right now. I took the drugs for about 6 months while I completely dropped sugar and carbs from my diet, I read about natural alternatives until the cows came home and I haven't touched a medication in 3 1/2 years now. The last check in with my doctor was about 2 months ago and he stated I was no longer in the pre diabetes range. I found out the hard way that Metformin depletes your B12, not a big fan of how that medication works. Berberine is your friend.

My husband ended up in hospital 11 December 2015 with a sugar reading of 21 ...(a piece of steak got stuck in his narrow suphogas- pardon spelling)...and by chance hospital diagnosed him with type 2 diabetes. After 7 days on drips to bring down his sugar & strict diabetes diet from Dietitian, my husband stopped drinking alcohol totally...changed his lifestyle, weight is a healthy 64kg....and within 2 yrs with my support & dedication, he came off his Metformin and another tablet and sugar down to 4.9. Dedication, discipline and exercise key words to good health.

I am one of those who had good luck with that. I have been on metformin since I was 35 and I am almost 81 now. I don't eat everything I want, but it's closer than if i was trying to control my blood sugar with diet only. I'm about 6 years beyond the average male lifespan, so I know the metformin is not going to shorten my life....I have, and still do enjoy eating most of what I want......without the metformin I would not have done that.....works for me.....

When I first found I had diabetes the doc put me on metformin. At first it was fine. Then I started having trouble, little things that continued to bigger things. On a Friday I woke to not being able to get out of bed. I was alone. I had to slowly lower myself to the floor, crawl to the door and with force of will open it. Took 3 months to get me to this point. I called my doctor and told him what was happening all my symptoms and he immediately said dot take any more. He said take nothing till Monday and called in a prescription for glipizide. It took four days of that medication to have me once again be crawling. I felt like I was dying. Never again. I seem to have the same problem with most prescription medications. I avoid them when possible. There are natural medicines that rarely have side effects and those are mild. At this point even insulin is causing side effects. Three days ago I put myself back on bitter Mellon. I have only use insulin once three days ago. My bloating is mostly gone, my eyesight is like 80% better, my feet were swelling and painful, that's gone, I can stand on my own without use of a walker or cane. I also use turmeric for pain, magnesium is a daily dose, plus zinc and do and some other minerals. I do have to take more tests bu that's fine. My fingers heal faster then the rest if my body. Oh and over 3 days I am 4 pounds lighter, my thirst is less, and I have had no sudden glucose drops into the 50's which was frequent before. So far so good. While not normal I feel much better.
