Correction: Jacobites weren't exclusively Scottish clans, but a large number of Jacobites did come from the Catholic Highland clans. Jacobites were just supporters of the Catholic Stuart Dynasty: the name coming from the Latin for James II & VII (Jacobus). There were many Jacobites and Jacobite sympathisers across the British isle in Ireland and England as well as in Scotland. It's interest to discover that the Government troops that fought against the Jacobites in 1745 were actually Scottish from the lowlands, whom were primarily Protestant and had a distinct culture compared to the Highlanders.

Interesting comments about being called British. Fact is that the vast majority of Scots if asked whether they are Scottish or British will say Scottish. There are a few who will see themselves as British before Scottish, some even try deny the existence of Scotland or undermine anything Scottish but polls have consistently shown that Scots see themselves as Scottish not British and mostly then you’ll find they are supporters of a certain football team.

@neilcole81588 жыл бұрын
Well, the reason I say that is because our citizenship is British. To call us English is just factually inaccurate, and ignores our separate Scottish cultural identity. But I figure 300 years of history makes being British part of that identity, so it's okay. No?
@daviddoesfilms26268 жыл бұрын
Neil Cole we are born in scotland, so we are scottish, thats our nationality
@neilcole81588 жыл бұрын
Well, yeah mate I agree. It's just that we're British too. If you're Scottish you have a British/EU passport, if you're Scottish you can vote in British elections, If you're Scottish you hold British citizenship, if you're Scottish you pay British taxes, if you're Scottish you live by laws made in the British Parliament as well as the Scottish Parliament, if you're Scottish you are protected by the British military. Scottish MPs sit in the British parliament, our head of government is the British Prime minister (I think about 7 of which were Scottish). The Scottish government has powers that have been devolved by the British Government. Even the heir to the British throne has the title "the Duke of Rothesay!" Is it not possible to be two things at the same time?

We were at war with Norway?
@johnnyappleseed49304 жыл бұрын
Ryan Mckie476, when I was researching the history of my Scottish roots, I saw that after the Viking ages, Norway claimed some those Northwest peninsula and islands in Scotland. At that time most of the highlands and lowlands were united under the kingdom of Alba/Scotland. So they said, let’s get them back. So I guess they declared war on Norway. There was the Historic Battle of Largs in where Scotland won. Scotland invaded the rest of Norway’s land and then the Norwegian king died, and the heir of the Norwegian throne made piece with Scotland and gave Scotland its stuff back.
@gamers-xh3uc4 жыл бұрын

gamers55, the war was short yes, but the Norwegian King died and thus the war ended. It’s really a stalemate, but the Scots won the battle of Largs, which was the major battle so they are credited to winning.

Beetlejuice good question. As you know, the last vote was 45-55. However, the Yes camp made out that Scotland would be rich in oil. Soon as we voted, then oil plummeted. We are better off in the U.K., particularly financially. The yes camp just have not got a valid argument for economics, which should scare anyone against voting yes! At the moment, the Sturgeon of the SNP (Scotland’s admiration Leader) is very good at copying the U.K. government and bringing out exactly what they say, but a few hours earlier. Where as, it’s hard for the U.K. government to come off well. It’s always easier for them. We had a fair vote, we said no. That shouldn’t change. We can’t keep having votes when we get something the SNP don’t want. The Yes camp will ageee to ANYTHING that gets them another vote. Even if they don’t believe it.

The Scottish lowlands were originally English. They were never never Gaelic. Lowland Scotland should have been part of England as they are much closer to England than the Scottish Highlands in every metric. Also, the guy that ordered the Plantation of Ulster was a Scot.
@Grort8 жыл бұрын
There was an Anglo-Saxon kingdom in the south of Scotland, bordering Strathclyde, but it wasn't part of England as I recall, wasn't it later annexed by one of the two Scottish kingdoms prior to 1066? Because post-1006, I know that the Scots went a bit mad and kept repeatedly invading England (was it Malcolm III Canmore that invaded it six times?) and getting rebuffed with increasingly harsher penalties. Also, Henry II technically subjugated Scotland, getting King William the Lion of Scotland to swear fealty to him and putting the Scottish church under the authority of the Archbishop of York, until his son Richard the Lionheart sold the Scots back their liberties so as to fund the Third Crusade.
@sarban16538 жыл бұрын
Yes, but that land was ethnically English. The OP mentions the English kingdom of Bernicia but I just wanted to emphasize.
@callummcgaffney92598 жыл бұрын
Even if culturally the lowlands were more aligned with northern England, a large amount of Scottish "Heroes" inventors and famous people in general were lowlanders. e.g Wallace, Robert the Bruce, Alexander Graham Bell and loads more. Also i wouldn't say they were originally English considering the original inhabitants of the region were Britons not Anglo-Saxon, pretty sure the Anglo-Saxons didn't push the Britons out of the lowlands either.
@sarban16538 жыл бұрын
***** A LOT of Anglo-Saxons settled in the Scottish Lowlands. The Scottish Lowlanders are their cultural continuity. Gaels have always been confined to the Scottish Highlands and Ireland.
@callummcgaffney92598 жыл бұрын
Eh do you have any evidence at all to prove this? As a lowlander myself i can assure you that Britons were the original inhabitants then during the 1400's a majority of Scots and Gaels lived in the lowlands, however i am not denying the fact that around the 1000's the lowlands were influenced by Anglo-Saxons.
