Ok so here's the thing about THE Suicide squad. That movie came out in 2021 which was a nebulous time during the DCEU because Justice league already came out and got financially and critically thrashed so WB did not know where they were gonna take the dceu. They were making movies like aquaman, shazam and birds of prey that didn't have any direct references to the extended universe and made no references to justice league. Mostly standalone stuff that might use Superman's name but be vague enough that it might not be henry cavill. Point being that THE suicide squad was one of these semi standalone movies. James Gunn was then allowed to just go fucking wild with picking characters to use and he didn't have to worry about continuity so it never once references this film. So its not really a sequel but it not a reboot either. It was like xmen first class where it could easily be placed in a separate universe had they wanted to.

2021 Suicide Squad is a soft reboot. Meaning some actors/characters return, but it's not really needed to watch this one (2016). Glad you enjoyed this, I haven't seen it myself in a while. There's definitely some good stuff here, but the editing was the killer of this movie. When the first trailer came out, it had huge buzz, and so rumor has it that WB execs decided to edit the movie more like the trailer (iirc it was set to Bohemian Rhapsody). Hence why there's so much popular music in the movie, people compared it to a music video movie. I think you're just watching whatever DC stuff you want, not necessarily in an order (BvS was before this). But, if you want to follow Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn, next movie is Birds of Prey (2020), before you watch the 2021 Suicide Squad.

There are two scenes in this film that were the highlights of two of its trailers, that were changed tonally in the end product that just ruined the whole vibe. One scene is when Joker is electroshocking Harley and he says, "Oh I'm not gonna kill ya. I'm just gonna hurt ya - really, REALLY bad..." In the trailer, he says this with a psychotic grin on his face. In the final product, they switched it with an alternative take where he looks all serious and mean and it just kills the vibe. He's supposed to be psychotic for the sake of being psychotic. The scene in the film, it feels like he's TRYING to be scary by being mean and serious looking, whereas when he says it with a giant grin on his face it simply feels like he is inherently psychotic. The other scene is when he is meeting with one of the gangster guys. The scene in the film is he sits in his lap and says, again, with a remarkably dull seriousness, "You're gonna be my friend." In the trailer he sits down in the guy's lap, slaps his face a little and says with a grin, "I cant wait to show you my - toys!" in a very naturally psychotic manner. If those two scenes hadn't been changed, I could have liked the film a lot more than I did. It wouldn't have saved the rest of the film and all the bad writing and just awful screenplay, but it would have made it more enjoyable. As far as I'm concerned, they should have just scrapped this film and made a Joker/Harley psycho film.

That's like Bruce Willis and all the B-movies that he's been in. They aren't B-movies because his acting was lacking, it's because the overall movie was just poo poo, mostly due to writing and screenplay. Harley is the only positive part of this movie and one of the reasons I loved her here (long before James Gunn and his much needed overhaul of the franchise) is because of the implication that Harley isn't a victim of Joker, he's her victim. She messed with his head, his memories because she wanted him to love her. He on the other hand kept her around so he could torture her back using what she wanted most - his affection. This is such an interesting version of their dynamic, it makes Harley a hella more toxic, but it also gives her a lot more agency in her origins as well as her criminal career. I hate that they removed this aspect completely in Birds of Prey.

Jared Leto is acutally on of the greatest actor, he sure miss this chracter of Joker, but let's remember that he's doing it after the Great Heath Ledger, hard thing to do, + If the directors included that in the movie and made him look like what he is, it's not Jared Fault...

It makes me happy if people can enjoy this film! To me personally I dont think theres a comic book film in the 2010s thats worse than this but thats also extremely subjective! I wish we got the Ayer cut because im so curious about it. Doesnt change this film was written extremely quickly which isnt david ayers fault! just WB messing around again! WB didnt support their artists and routinely made them look worse than they are! its clear in the edit we were robbed of a full harley quin origin and character arc
@passionsquietrage7 ай бұрын
I don't get what's so bad about this movie. We got a fairly good character arc for Harley, and her story is continued in other movies. What we got robbed off was Leto's full performance as Joker since most of it was left out, even though the marketing focused on him completely. Definitely a screwjob on the part of WB. It's one of the many reasons studio execs should stay out of the production process and let the director do the job they were hired to do.

The original DCEU consisted of Manof Steel, BvS, Wonder Woman, Suicide Squad and ZSJL. After ZSJL, starting with aquaman wb decided to move away from darker tone films and essentially did a soft reboot woth every film afterwards. TSS(2021) is a soft reboot of this suicide squad film using some old characters but introducing new ones. Personally i think this film is better than james gunn TSS but thats just me

Be sure to watch Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) before The Suicide Squad.

I enjoyed it because you enjoyed it. Watching it with someone that’s into it and gets it makes all the difference. The person I saw this at the theaters with did not enjoy it and it really impacts your enjoyment. Also I totally agree with you on joker. This required a lot of improv, and Jared Leto is not an improv guy. He’s a good actor but he can’t do improv to safe his life, and jokers gotta be funny. Most of the time his joker felt like a rip off of him Carrey as ace Ventura
@passionsquietrage7 ай бұрын
To be fair, we didn't get his full performance so we don't really know how it would have turned out. All we got were bits and pieces of it, but what we got wasn't that bad.

@@passionsquietrage I don’t believe they would’ve cut out his performance if it was good material. And I’ll have to agree to disagree that his stuff wasn’t that bad. For me personally, it was that bad.

@@foreverkent2225 I've never understood why people disliked it so much. We'll never know how good or bad it was because we'll likely never see it. My theory is that it was cut out due to his method acting antics on set. Regardless of how you feel about his performance, you can't deny the fact that he got massively screwed over by WB on this movie.
@foreverkent22257 ай бұрын
@@passionsquietrage i can’t speak for everyone else but I personally disliked it because while Jared Leto is a great actor, he needs the right direction and a good understanding of the character. It’s clear David Ayer didn’t give a lot of clear direction and left a good bit up to Leto. Unfortunately he’s not a good improv actor, and i don’t believe he had a good grasp on who the joker is supposed to be. It comes off as him trying too hard to be edgy and weird. The joker should be edgy and weird but not because he’s trying to be, it’s just who he is. The main thing I found missing though was that his joker was never funny. That’s what really makes a good joker performance imo, even though the joker scares you and is downright evil, you can’t help but still love him because he genuinely makes you laugh. Like I said earlier his performance on a whole feels like a discount store impersonation of Jim Carrey as Ace Ventura. But I’m not upset about it. You can’t win ‘em all. It doesn’t ruin the movie for me, and the great thing about the joker is his character lends itself so well to reinterpretation, so we can keep on getting new versions even if one of them doesn’t land the way we’d hoped.

@@foreverkent2225 How do we know that Leto didn't have a good grasp or understanding of the character? We didn't get to see the full performance since the majority of what he filmed was left out of the movie.

I believe Warner Bros really interfered with the movie, but I still kinda enjoy it! It gave us a great Harley Quinn in Margot Robbie, & an even better Amanda Waller in Viola Davis!, buuuuuut on the flip side it also gave us the rather wooden Enchantress, & while I don't outright hate it, still the worst version of Joker to grace the movie screen! Another great version of Harley I'd love to see you react to is the animated Harley Quinn in the tv show of the same name, it's the funniest thing & for my money Big Bangs Kayley Cuoco gets Harley spot on!

"Looking forward to crack up" Wrong movie. The Suicide Squad will have you rolling!!! SOOOOO GOOD. This one. . yikes!! Worst Joker ever. One of the things I hated that the studio did was insert him into the SS movie. . He is not part of SS and it was not needed. Let Harley stand on her own. She is the queen after all!!!

This movie gets so much unnecessary hate. It's really not that bad. Jared Leto got screwed over by WB on this one though. I don't get why people hate/dislike this version of Joker so much. He's not that bad, and we didn't get to see Leto's full performance due to most of it being left out of the movie for some reason(hence the screwjob I mentioned above).

As flawed as it is in retrospect, I remember really having fun with it in theaters and it led to the other, better ones, but also established a punk rock kind of “fuck you, I am who I am” mentality, and the unique identity DC movies were sorely missing at the time. While this is not the best film (and the sequel is fantastic), this film has a GREAT cast. Besides Robbie & Davis, Deadshot, Boomeramg, Diablo, Croc, & Flag are really good characters. Letto’s not bad, just forgettable. Heck the casting for Enchantress & Katana are perfect, just badly written/directed. It’s like Jim Carrey as Riddler. Perfect casting it just need a different movie. It’s also interesting to see a Joker who (seemingly) genuinely loves Harley
