If you're thinking "THAT IS A TORTOISE, NOT A TURTLE", we have a video for you to watch: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pHzVZ6iKg65laaM Tortoises are a unique group of turtles, this is true, but that group falls right in the middle of the turtle group. Saying "that is a tortoise, not a turtle" is like saying "that is a tortoise, not a reptile", or "that is a tortoise, not an animal". I hope that helps :)

My 6th grade teacher had a massive African Spurred tortoise named Tank as a class pet and she would bring him to school every day (she also brought her cat named Taz, who was the official hall monitor). Unfortunately, her neighbor who let Tank graze his lawn, forgot to tell her he'd sprayed the grass one day which ended very tragically Tank. The bright side was her local pet store had just gotten a much younger tortoise of the same species (Tank had been pretty much full grown, this one was about 12") surrendered to them. He'd been living in a dark closet for his whole life, his shell was bumped up like crazy. So she brought him in to class and we all got to participate in caring for him and watching him slowly heal and rehabilitate him. We named him Mini-Tank. He's a big reason I want a tortoise some day if I ever have the space.

We had one come into the clinic that was egg bound. We had to refer the owner to a different clinic because our vet was not comfortable doing the surgery since you basically have to use a saw on them. I always wonder how she is doing now.
@meganfisher8315 жыл бұрын
Well now I wonder too. But I've also seen turtles be hit by cars with shells cracked in five pieces somehow. SOMEHOW. Survive with immediate solid veterinary intervention. But being egg bound would likely also end her life so there really isn't another choice.
@koalamarsc74525 жыл бұрын
That whole saw part scares me.
@nobody2021 Жыл бұрын
Wait, so when a tortoise gets pregnant it's basically a death sentence?
@ceopet Жыл бұрын
@L No not nessisarily, recovery is very long though. After using the saw you have to put the shell back on with this special epoxy stuff and it eventually rebuilds itself, though everything is very slow going with reptiles.
@ceopet Жыл бұрын
@Megan Fisher After opening up the shell to get tge eggs out it gets put back together with thus special epoxy type stuff, but healing takes a very long time After that. The shell is basically bone, so it's just a very slow going process, like anything with reptiles go. It is a risky surgery for sure but they can absolutely get through it.

We have a fenced in Sulcata with a BIG dog house ( with warm lights when he needs it ) and he's got a huge yard that's ALL his. In the winter time, we convert our downstairs guest room into a winter condo for him. I literally build a huge pen for him, full of mulch and warm lights ( including UV ) and he eats TONS of lettuce and veggies every day, while he watches the snow through the sliding glass doors. He LOVES people and dogs, and when he lives in the house, the cat spends all his time in the "turtle room" because its nice and warm. The tortoise is happy to have company!

We have a sulcata tortoise, a rescue. It's previous owners for some reason thought it was okay to have him in a enclosure where he couldn't turn around. So, both his growth was stunted and rear legs are weak, even years later. He can move without wheels now but he's still not 100% and probably never will be. So, with that really sad load of story out of the way, he now has free reign over our back yard, his own house to enjoy complete with heating pad. Basically eats all day, every day and is a good boy. Too hot, climbs into one of our bushes that he's really worked into comfy spots, too cold, right home onto the heating pad, winter, we got an enclosure inside. I have a few vids of him on my channel. He's made himself quite comfortable. I've been trying to get him familiar with me by handling him, staying around him a bunch. He's been really good. He's a good boy and as you said, eats, all, day. Constantly chowing down on the lawn, gets a head of lettuce and that's gone rather quickly. He's friendly, seems to enjoy our company. Thank you for showing off your tort. He's so good

People buying giant animals with zero research is a major pet peeve of mine. We see it in aquatics ALL the time. Craziest example I’ve seen in person was baby pacu the size of quarters at a big box store years ago. They were adorable. They were even labeled as “Black Fin Pacu” with the correct genus Collosoma. Label said maximum size was 6”. I just had to shake my head. Let’s try 24”+ and breaking the tank doing underwater zoomies. To be fair I’d love a school of those too, but again, no space for a 500 gallon reinforced tank soooo, maybe some day.

Just another thing I've noticed about handling these long-lived gentle giants, Sulcatas seem to just be intent on doing what they want, and won't take no for an answer. They'll insist on going somewhere, you'll drag them somewhere else, and they immediately start heading back towards wherever they were trying to go in the first place. Then again that seems to be typical tortoise behavior, it's just a lot harder to manage with a tortoise that can weigh as much as a small adult human when fully grown.
