If you're thinking "THAT IS A TORTOISE, NOT A TURTLE", we have a video for you to watch: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pHzVZ6iKg65laaM Tortoises are a unique group of turtles, this is true, but that group falls right in the middle of the turtle group. Saying "that is a tortoise, not a turtle" is like saying "that is a tortoise, not a reptile", or "that is a tortoise, not an animal". I hope that helps :)

lmao yup exactly, that's why he kinda sucks honestly in my opinion. He treats animals like they're made on a factory floor. He doesn't give them the proper care or any enrichment at all. And all his videos have clickbait titles or even just false thumbnails that lie. He's shitty he only cares about views and money.

I had one of these guys when I was growing up, and he was the most cantankerous, stubborn jerk on the planet. This tortoise would rise up real high on his legs and launch himself at your shins if you got anywhere near him, and sometimes even when you weren't. I can't count the times I was out doing yard work, only to have over a hundred pounds of tortoise come slamming into my legs. I loved the big idiot, but my god, was he a grump.

I’m going to get an in door cage built into the garage near where the iguana is just in case it gets too cold outside. I’ll be sure to make sure it can’t escape or drown itself in a pool we might have by fencing it off.

My 6th grade teacher had a massive African Spurred tortoise named Tank as a class pet and she would bring him to school every day (she also brought her cat named Taz, who was the official hall monitor). Unfortunately, her neighbor who let Tank graze his lawn, forgot to tell her he'd sprayed the grass one day which ended very tragically Tank. The bright side was her local pet store had just gotten a much younger tortoise of the same species (Tank had been pretty much full grown, this one was about 12") surrendered to them. He'd been living in a dark closet for his whole life, his shell was bumped up like crazy. So she brought him in to class and we all got to participate in caring for him and watching him slowly heal and rehabilitate him. We named him Mini-Tank. He's a big reason I want a tortoise some day if I ever have the space.

We had one come into the clinic that was egg bound. We had to refer the owner to a different clinic because our vet was not comfortable doing the surgery since you basically have to use a saw on them. I always wonder how she is doing now.
@meganfisher831
@meganfisher831 5 жыл бұрын
Well now I wonder too. But I've also seen turtles be hit by cars with shells cracked in five pieces somehow. SOMEHOW. Survive with immediate solid veterinary intervention. But being egg bound would likely also end her life so there really isn't another choice.

Wait, so when a tortoise gets pregnant it's basically a death sentence?
@ceopet
@ceopet Жыл бұрын
@L No not nessisarily, recovery is very long though. After using the saw you have to put the shell back on with this special epoxy stuff and it eventually rebuilds itself, though everything is very slow going with reptiles.
@ceopet
@ceopet Жыл бұрын
@Megan Fisher After opening up the shell to get tge eggs out it gets put back together with thus special epoxy type stuff, but healing takes a very long time After that. The shell is basically bone, so it's just a very slow going process, like anything with reptiles go. It is a risky surgery for sure but they can absolutely get through it.

I'd love to own and care for a rescue sulcata. Unfortunately, I don't know how to test my lawn for the level of pesticides that have been used on it. Also I have heard of some pet rescues are willing to take payments to house animals for periods of time, maybe that can help people dodge the expensive enclosure issue for people like me in the noreast.

We have a fenced in Sulcata with a BIG dog house ( with warm lights when he needs it ) and he's got a huge yard that's ALL his. In the winter time, we convert our downstairs guest room into a winter condo for him. I literally build a huge pen for him, full of mulch and warm lights ( including UV ) and he eats TONS of lettuce and veggies every day, while he watches the snow through the sliding glass doors. He LOVES people and dogs, and when he lives in the house, the cat spends all his time in the "turtle room" because its nice and warm. The tortoise is happy to have company!

We have a sulcata tortoise, a rescue. It's previous owners for some reason thought it was okay to have him in a enclosure where he couldn't turn around. So, both his growth was stunted and rear legs are weak, even years later. He can move without wheels now but he's still not 100% and probably never will be. So, with that really sad load of story out of the way, he now has free reign over our back yard, his own house to enjoy complete with heating pad. Basically eats all day, every day and is a good boy. Too hot, climbs into one of our bushes that he's really worked into comfy spots, too cold, right home onto the heating pad, winter, we got an enclosure inside. I have a few vids of him on my channel. He's made himself quite comfortable. I've been trying to get him familiar with me by handling him, staying around him a bunch. He's been really good. He's a good boy and as you said, eats, all, day. Constantly chowing down on the lawn, gets a head of lettuce and that's gone rather quickly. He's friendly, seems to enjoy our company. Thank you for showing off your tort. He's so good

I adore sulcatas. They’re so freaking cool. I’d love to have one some day. No space for a giant tortoise habitat currently. But one day maybe. People buying giant animals with zero research is a major pet peeve of mine. We see it in aquatics ALL the time. Craziest example I’ve seen in person was baby pacu the size of quarters at a big box store years ago. They were adorable. They were even labeled as “Black Fin Pacu” with the correct genus Collosoma. Label said maximum size was 6”. I just had to shake my head. Let’s try 24”+ and breaking the tank doing underwater zoomies. To be fair I’d love a school of those too, but again, no space for a 500 gallon reinforced tank soooo, maybe some day.

I think it would be so cool to have a sulcata tortoise rescue, that's now what I strive to make in life

Just another thing I've noticed about handling these long-lived gentle giants, Sulcatas seem to just be intent on doing what they want, and won't take no for an answer. They'll insist on going somewhere, you'll drag them somewhere else, and they immediately start heading back towards wherever they were trying to go in the first place. Then again that seems to be typical tortoise behavior, it's just a lot harder to manage with a tortoise that can weigh as much as a small adult human when fully grown.

I love my sulcata tortoise so much. I cant wait till summer comes back around cause ima finally build him an awesome outdoor pen. I think he is close to 2 years old. Also I cant wait to see if it’s male or female.

Thank you for the tip about adopting a Tortoise from a rescue! I would not have thought about that option. A google search lead me to a rescue in my area! :D

I've had my Sulcata for 4yrs now,I bought it at a pet shop at 4weeks old or so they said,wish I would have known that there's Sulcata rescues,I would have gone that route :/ .....we do have a outside enclosure for her but I've decided to keep her indoors just a little longer.....she roams free around the house,my pugs are scared of her lol....if she comes their way they will move.She loves sleeping in one of her boxes or under the kitchen bench. :)I do have one question,I've noticed that some Sulcies are darker colored than others...does that mean they're from different places in the savanna?Thanks for the video,loved it!

Not sure if you are gonna reply, But we adopted 2 baby tortoises from a lady at work. 2 siblings, She gave em both to us, I suggested she did due keeping them together so they didn't get lonely instead of separating them. Due to them being social creatures.

I rescued my two tortoises from a very bad situation they were stuck in a chicken coop with chickens and chicken poop almost halfway up to their shell they couldn’t even move and they were so malnourished that every time a plastic bag flew into the enclosure they eat the plastic because they wouldn’t feed them for some reason these people were obviously animal hoarders but good news is they’re doing fine now and I have a male and female and they both breed and The female has laid a few eggs that have actually hatched and I got about 12 babies out of it

Luckily it is warm enough here in Phoenix for a sulcata, and I've got plenty of grass outside in a big backyard. It can pretty much be in the backyard for the majority of the year.
