Late to the party on the series finale but GREAT WORK and GREAT SERIES. I feel like a couple years will pass by and I'll get a weird hit of nostalgia and end up re-watching this collection of retrospective videos, so kudos to you for the timeless content. I am not sure what your plans are (if any) with the channel now that this is all over, but I will be around to support whatever comes next (blink retrospective wink wink). If nothing big is planned, I'll still be naive enough to fall for the April Fools videos every year, so you'll always have that on me. Cheers.

Hey Cody! Anytime is just in time as far as flattering comments are concerned haha. Thank you for being a longtime viewer and supporter of the Retrospective series! Actually, I may end up re-watching some episodes of the series myself a few years down the line. Both to reminisce about certain times in my life and to see how I've progressed video wise. Hopefully, I'll have improved a bit by then ha. I'm also a little unsure about what my future video & channels plans are, though I do have some ideas. Ultimately, I'd like to try a couple new things that hopefully will appeal to some retrospective fans. (Yourself included haha) But nothing's set in stone as if right now. Thanks again for enjoying the series, and hopefully I'll hear from you again in the future. Cheers!

Deryck sure loves putting in a little solo piano and vocal section doesn't he? I actually had no idea how many of these were from the 'vault' so to speak, but I'm with you thinking it's really cool to take them and update them for the final record giving them their chance to shine - in fact it shows, given many of those ones are also my favourites off the album. I do agree that the Hell side is stronger overall, there's some great stuff on the Heaven side, but alas it really is dragged down by that damn 'Landmines Trilogy' eh. Seriously though man, congrats on making this entire series, it's been a joy to be along the ride and hear you break down these albums in such a fun way, especially hearing you validate a lot of the same thoughts and feelings I have myself about this band we love. This series really has been fantastic! Also damn you got me good with that 'small things' edit and the Fancy Pants reference, wasn't expecting that haha

Hey Tom! Fancy meeting you here haha. Yeah, Deryck certainly does. Though maybe a little too much on this album. I'm also glad those vault tracks got their time to shine. I'm sure Deryck's got a bunch of other tracks and demos in the vault, and I wonder if any more will see the light of day in his post Sum 41 career? I guess only time will tell. Also, given their similarities, I wonder if the "Landmines Trilogy" (At least Landmines and Dopamine) were tracks Deryck wrote for the same artist, or two seperate artists respectively? And of course, thank you so much for watching through and enjoying the Sum 41 retrospective! Being able to talk to and hear from fellow Sum 41 fans like yourself, was one of the highlights of making this series. Your appreciation of my lame jokes is also appreciated haha. Hope to hear from you again in the future! Cheers!

Every opinion, almost every joke and lastly i have to say this was an inspirational series as I am thinking of doing my own retrospective series of Green Day or other bands that I love. First off, this series has been an absolutely amazing ride! I’ve been SUPER excited for this one, so now it’s time for my long ass comment: 1. So I know on the Heaven video, I kind of gave some expectations I had for the Heaven side. Looking back, the Heaven side has gone down a little bit for me. At that point in time, my standards were a bit lower since the modern day pop punk scene from old and new faces has been…..interesting. I still think they did a good job representing the old and new styles of pop punk (I still rly love Landmines), but yeah it has its flaws. However, the hell side was one I was super pumped for and had high standards for. 2. Initially I was somewhat disappointed by the hell side. This is because I kind of had the vision that it would sound like chuck (since that’s my favorite album ever). I guess it’s kind of like the expectations you had for the Heaven side! I heard Cone say in an interview how the hell side was similar to slayer. Looking back I think that was more just comparing the two sides and how different they were, but part ofme (won’t agree haha hell song reference) still wishes the hell side was even heavier and more intense. However a lot of the songs rly grew on me such as I don’t need anyone, stranger, and it’s all me. 3. Rise up kind of saved my life. I was in a VERY dark place when it came out after being screwed over by people who I thought were my closest friends in 2023. The song was EXACTLY what I needed and it felt like a reference to their entire metal side. The breakdown with the screaming is also AWESOME. It has its flaws, but at this point it’s my most listened to song on Spotify and my favorite song from the band. It helped me get ready for the new year. 4. Over the edge and paint it black are kind of eh to me now. Over the edge’s bridge riff initally sounded cool, but it’s way too similar to the main riff in MX by deftones. As for paint it black, yeah I wanted another sum 41 song especially since there was already a rly short track that was more of intro than a full track (even if the intro has the sauce). 4. House of liars and you wanted war fucking rock and will probably be top 5 in my Spotify wrapped. 5. FUUUUUUCKING HELL, how the end begins is a track. So I didn’t rly mind the abrupt outros and simple song structures for most of the songs. HOWEVER, if there was one track that I wanted to be different it was this one. I wanted something epic like 88, hooch, or even how back where I belong connects into the exit song but NOPE. What’s weird is that I do like the track on its own, especially since it fit my feelings for graduating college this year, but a song like that had absolutely no business being the last sum 41 song. A friend said the simple outro fit the fact that the band wasn’t over staying their welcome but nah, that song was disappointing. Overall I’m still very very happy with the album we got even if one side is noticeably better than the other. It was a major event in my life and I’m still listening to a lot of the songs. However, sadly didn’t fit deryck’s claim that this was their best album. But he also said it at least had some of their best songs and I can 100000% agree with that. In terms of my sum 41 ranking, this one is in the middle for me. My final ranking is: 1. Chuck 2. Infected 3. SBM (also helped me a lot during dark times) 4. All killer 5. H+H 6. 13 voices 7. Order in decline 8. Half hour (still very good but didn’t stick as much) 9. Underclass hero These videos have been awesome! Hope to see more content from you in the future!

Oh man, I do love me a good long comment haha. Now time for my long ass response: 1. Yeah, I had some pretty high hopes for the Heaven side myself, and sadly it didn't quite satisfy me. I totally get what you mean about the Heaven side seeming really good in the context of modern mainstream pop punk though. Although to be honest, since this album is still pretty new, I imagine my opinions on each side will probably change at least a bit over time. When 13 Voices came out, I thought it was their best album since Chuck. Though I still like that album, I definitely would not say that now haha. 2. I also recall that interview where Cone compared some of the Hell side tracks to Slayer, and with all due respect, I think he was pretty off with that comparision haha. I mean maybe some of Deryck's vocals are kinda Slayer esque, and there are some intense tracks, but I wouldn't say anything sounds like Slayer really. And yeah I can totally relate to the feeling of having your personal vision for an album, and then being kind bummed by the reality of what it actually is. Also nice Hell song reference haha 3. I'm sorry that you had to go through that rough experience with your former "friends," but I'm glad that you were able to get through it. It's amazing how music can help us get through rough times and speak to us in certain ways when we're down. Personally, songs like "Pieces" and "Some Say" have been particularly comforting to me during certain rough times in my life. 4. Indeed, they do rock! 5. Yeah, it's probably the most anticlimatic track Sum 41 has ever put out, and it was definitely a low point for me. At least the Heaven side got a fairly good closer with "Radio Silence." As a side note, congrats on graduating college! Thanks for watching and enjoying my retrospective series. And thanks for the comment too haha. I do enjoy reading people's comments and hearing about their opinions and experiences with Sum 41's music. Hope to hear from you again in the future!

Deryck finishing ideas hes had for years isnt anything he should be critized for. That is normal song writing. Some songs write themselves fast and others take years with riffs or verses youve had until the right time where everthing else magically falls into place. Guaranteed all song writers go through this, only derycks shining a light on it.

It’s been out a few months and I still think “Hell” is their best work after SBM. It’s just banger after banger with the exception of paint it black. I don’t mind the cover but it should be a bonus track in my view. It’s all me is probably my favourite. Knew straight away it would be an unused Chuck demo. All the solos are insane. How the end begins I love the verses but it’s quite simple so it’s probably my least favourite.

I'm genuinely shocked you didn't mention how much the verses of You Wanted War sound like 13 Voices (the song) Because I notice it EVERY time I listen to the song and it doesn't necessarily ruin it, but... Anyway, my personal favorite on the Hell side was Over The Edge, and I can't even describe why. That and House of Liars just somehow go so well together that I consider both of them one song, and I love them both. You know what, I'm glad SOMEONE brought up Paint It Black as a good cover. Because people seem to shit on it SO much and that just upsets me. Should it be on the last album? Maybe not as a main track, no, but I was never one that was guaranteed to hate it. As for the final song... yeah, I agree. I like the song myself, but it just... it's our last real song with The Sums? That just hurts.

Also, I can't leave a comment without acknowledging the finality of the series as well, can I? I personally suggest blink-182 or Green Day because they have some WILD leaps and valleys and it'd be interesting to hear your thoughts on them. Andy B outta nowhere! Your vids on Sum 41 are making me consider doing a similar series on one of my other favourite bands (Marianas Trench who have a completely different style to the Sums), but I’m having trouble deciding whether or not I should go into their first album recorded after they signed their record label first or start with the band before the band stuff as an Episode 0 of sorts (as well as the self titled EP they dropped so they could tour while working on said album). Either way, exited to see your thoughts on Hell. This half is very much a great mix of tracks but it doesn’t feel very different from the stuff on 13 Voices or Order In Decline. That’s not a bad thing but I was kinda holding out for more?

Yeah, I meant to put this one out a little earlier, but better late than never as they say haha. And I'm stoked that my series is inspiring you to make your own retrospective videos! I'm familiar with of Marianas Trench. but only a few songs though. Also, if you feel that the "Episode 0" material is interesting enough, then I'd recommend you make an episode about it. It could also be a good way to introduce people to the band's earlier material and history. But of course, it's ultimately your call.

@@andhedrewbees It’s not just interesting, it was lost media for a long period of time and only very recently did we recover the album in full! So many favs still haven’t even heard every track from it cause it’s obscure media now. But overall, we have similar opinions on a lot of these songs, except Bad Mistake would make my Top 3 for the Heaven side personally. I see this double album as the bands magnum opus. Not their best, but a great showcase of every era they’ve ever had mixed in with influences from both acts they grew up listening to as well as Deryck allowing for others to have more influence on the tracks themselves. House of Liars is the other track I thought was very “Gob”, especially given its similarities to Screaming Bloody Murder. But you can feel how much the other guys had a say in the guitar & bass work throughout IMO, something you can’t really say when it comes to some of the other albums they’ve put out (looking at you, Underclass Hero… you misunderstood classic). Either way, I’ll be around to see whatever else you care to put out.
@andhedrewbees
@andhedrewbees Ай бұрын
Well if it's that obscure, then I'd say you should definitely talk about it. You could be the 1st to introduce people and fans to these old songs. Yeah from what I've seen, "Bad Mistake" is turning out to be a cult classic from the Heaven side. It definitely has a unique identity compared to the other tracks on that side. Your comments about Gob remind me that I need to give their discography a proper listen. Maybe then, I'd be able to hear the "Gobness" in Sum 41's sound a bit better. And I'm also in agreeance about Underclass Hero's misunderstood/underrated status haha. Thanks for watching and I hope to hear from you again in the future. Cheers!

I haven't heard all of their albums, but I've quite a few of them. Pretty much all of their albums from their "Iron Maiden" to "Seventh Son," some of their post 2000s work like "Brave New World," and a handful of other songs across their discography. I also got to see them live on the "Legacy of the Beast" tour a few years ago which was pretty sweet. @@andhedrewbees haha yeah crazy coincidence 😂 i'm still new to the Band so its very hard to memorize every song and Album name. But i'm making my lists where i rate every Song and Album. Somewhere In Time is my favorite Album. I LOVE most of their Album Covers, They look so good. I already bought two T Shirts. One with the Cover from The Number of the Beast and one with the Cover from Somewhere in Time. I made a Top 18 Playlist of my favorite Songs: - Prowler - Children of the Damned - The Number of the Beast - Hallowed By Thy Name - The Trooper - To Tame a Land - Powerslave - Stranger In a Strange Land - The Nomad - Dance of Death - For the greater good of God - El Dorado - Senjutsu - The Parchment - Caught Somewhere in Time - Sea Of Madness - Wasted Years - Alexander The Great These are my favorites for now. But i will probably add more in the coming weeks. Stranger In a Strange Land is maybe my Number 1. Everytime I hear it I want to write a story about someone who is lost in a futuristic & dark Strange land/world. But there are many more great Songs I dont like the two Albums with the different singer. The X Factor and Virtuel Xl. His Voice ruined everything for me.

Damn, you're a new fan!? Considering you went through their whole discography, I would've assumed you were a longtime fan or something haha. Stranger in a Strange Land is a solid choice. It's got a great groove, an awesome main guitar riff, and that atmospheric melodic mid section leading into the guitar solos is phenomenal. I really should give it a listen sometime soon haha. First time listening to it the Hell side really was just Meh to me. I heard it and i forgot about every song. Nothing stood out to me. But like a fine Wine it gets better and better with time. Prepararsi a Salire: "i never felt this more alive!" it gave me Goosebumps. So good. I also liked how experimental it was, especially together with Rise Up. This reminded me on SBM, the A Dark Road out of Hell. BUT the piano outro ruined it a little bit....it killed my excitement and the flow. Rise Up: Fun Song....but its not as heavy as i was hoping. I liked the Bridge Riff + Screams. The Chorus was disappointing. But overall a very good song. Stranger in these Times: i loved the intro. The verse sounds a bit too fast and chaotic to me. The Chorus is great. But the song needed an Solo or something.... I dont need anyone. Wow i'm surprised you liked it that much. I really thought you would hate the slow pacing and Chorus 😂 but yeah very good song. But something is missing and i dont know what it is. Maybe its really the Chorus...or atleast the beginning of the Chorus. Over The Edge: i'm surprised THIS Chorus doesnt stand out to you. This one is EPIC! like many Choruses on Hell. I love how wild the beginning is , the Chorus is awesome, the bridge shows Sum 41 weaknesss....they are really not that creative. But its fine. I love the outro (reminds me also on something SBM would do). House Of Liars: Another surprise....YOU LIKE THIS SONG?! WHAAAT? 😂 i'm waiting for the verse since 2010. Its in my head for 14 years!!!! I even have the clip in my playlist 😂 anyway. I LOVE the intro. I LOVE the verse. The Chorus is just fine. The Bridge is sooo weak and boring...ugh...so disappointing. This one really needed something dark like the opening in the Bridge. But i still like the Song. You Wanted War: I love angry Songs like this. Kinda like Sick of Everyone. I really liked the verse. The Chorus is amazing! Thr Solos are fine, but its not for me (but its still fine). I was a bit disappointed by the Bridge. Could have been more explosive or angry. But its a great Song. Paint it Black:....why deryck. WHYYY?! I mean it sounds good, but why is it on this Album? Its not even Heavy. As an bonus track okay, but on this Album?? No no. Not with me...i'm out. Its all me: this became one of my favorites! Yes its more of the same and yes the verse sounds like Over The Edge, but on steroids! Its so Wild, agressive and heavy. Its sooo good! The Solo is also great and the Bridge....i love the Bridge🥵 great Song! The Guitars are very good. How the End Begins: its kinda the Twisted by Design situation all over again, but worse. While Twisted by Design has some flaws, it was still very satisfying to me. I remember listening to How The End Begins....i was listening to it thinking "please dont end abruptly, please give us something interesting in the Bridge". Cause i really liked the sound of the Song and the Lyrics. Its really similar to Twisted by Design. But then Deryck just repeated the Chorus at the end again and it stopped. I Screamed "noooo Deryck, why?! You fucked it up....why isnt there even an outro that fades away like Twisted by Design? Why is nothing happenening in thr Bridge? Goddamn i was so pissed and sad. This could have been my favorite song. But nope. Radio Silence for example was much better and more creative. I still cant believe it that it ended this way. A Phantom Pain...even though i'm extremly disappointed....i really loved the sound, the verse, the chorus and the Lyrics.... Overall i'm very happy with Heaven x Hell, there are creative flaws and sometimes weak and re-used Lyrics...which make this Album less authentic. But its fun listening to the whole Album. Its maybe in my Top 3 Albums, i'm not sure yet. God why was How The End Begins so disappointing xD why is there no one in the Band who says "hmm Deryck NO! This Songs needs an Solo, or a Bridge with different vocals and the song slowly fades away....and at the end a surprise solo...maybe something from half hour of power." Everything is better than what we got. Anyway. Thanks for all the work you have done and the vids. it was a lot of fun watching the vids (except for the SBM one xD). We see us again.

I always look forward to your long comments Ben, and you did not dissapoint for this final episode haha. Now to give my various comments responding to your various comments haha: - I also wasn't a fan of "Rise Up's" chorus. At least at first. But over time it did grow on me, much like the entire song did. - I'm surprised that you're surprised that I like "I Don't Need Anyone." I suppose I sometimes come across like a speed junkie with my taste in Sum 41 haha. But yeah, I do love a good heavy groove and that track totally hooked me even from my 1st listen. - Though I didn't really comment on it, I actually do enjoy the Chorus of "Over the Edge" and think it's one of the better aspects about that song. - I'm not surprised at all to learn you like "House of Liars" given it's SBM origins, but I'm surprised you don't like the Chorus and Bridge. I thought the riffing in the bridge was very SBM esque and so I thought it be right up your alley. I guess it goes to show you sometimes opinions can be unpredictable. - I totally understand your feelings about "Paint it Black." Even as somebody who actually enjoyed the cover, I agree with you that it probably should've been a bonus track and an original track should've taken it's place on the standard tracklist. - I think it's fair to say "It's All Me" is more aggressive than "Over the Edge." and I'm also not suprised to learn this is one of your favourites haha. - I totally agree with your comments on "How the End Begins." It's the least climatic closer in the Sum 41 Discography. Hell, it might even been the least climatic ballad in the Sum 41 Discography. I may find a track like "Best of Me" pretty generic and bland, but it at least has a good sense of dynamics and progression. That's one thing the Heaven side has over the Hell side: It has a better closer with "Radio Silence." For all it's ups and downs, I will say "Heaven x Hell" is definitely one of the most interesting albums Sum 41 has ever put out. It seems to be getting strong praise and strong critique from all over the Sum 41 fanbase and it's been kinda cool to see everybody's different reactions and opinions. That was one of the joys of reading comments on my retrospective videos. Thank you for being such a longtime supporter of this series. That post you made about Episode 1 on the Sum 41 Reddit really helped some people discover my channel and I'm extremely grateful for that. Hope to hear from you again in the future dude. Cheers!

@@andhedrewbees i'm not planning to write long comments, it just happens xD i'm surprised no one else does it. Before i begun writing, i hought "this will be short, I have not much to say". I was wrong ^^ Its good to hear that my reddit post back then could help 👍 Yeah I will miss talking about The Sums. It was fun to talk about every song. Soon i'm ready to talk about Iron Maiden 😆

Believe me, as a pretty rambly dude myself, I totally understand that haha. So, with your deep dive into Iron Maiden, can we expect the Ben Slashes "Iron Maiden Retrospective" somewhere in time? haha
