The Vaigai Valley Civilisation Excavations in the tiny hamlet of Keeladi prove that an urban civilisation existed in Tamil Nadu in the Sangam era on the banks of the river Vaigai. The recent excavations conducted in the State, including in Kodumanal and Porunthal, which have been “strengthened by a large number of radiocarbon dates, have brought about a sea-change in our understanding of the archaeological developments in Tamil Nadu. Key Findings: 1st round 2015 excavation by ASI: Unearthed antiquities that “provide crucial evidence to understanding the missing links of the Iron Age [12th century BCE to the 6th century BCE] to the Early Historic Period [6th century BCE to the 4th century BCE] and subsequent cultural developments. 2nd round 2016: Clues about the existence of a Tamil civilisation that had trade links with other regions in the country and abroad. This civilisation has been described by Tamil poets belonging to the Sangam period Found that the cultural deposits unearthed during the fourth excavation at Keeladi in Sivaganga district could be dated to a period between 6th century BCE and the 1st century CE. The third round (2017): It has no “significant findings”. Fourth round (2018) by SDA (State Department of Archeology): findings included brick structures, terracotta ring wells, fallen roofing with tiles, golden ornaments, broken parts of copper objects, iron implements, terracotta chess pieces, ear ornaments, spindle whorls, figurines, black and redware, rouletted ware and a few pieces of Arretine ware, besides beads made of glass, terracotta and semi-precious stones. Major findings: Based on radiometric dates recovered from archaeological sites like Kodumanal, Alagankulam and Porunthal (TN), we know that Tamil [the Tamil-Brahmi script] was dated to 5th century BCE. But the recent scientific dates obtained from the Keeladi findings push back the date by another century. 5th round: “a game-changer” The SDA plunged into “guided excavation” using the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Survey, the Magnetometer Survey and the Ground Penetrating Radar Survey. Guided excavation has led to the discovery of a lot of structures this round. The Tamil Brahmi script, found engraved on the outer surface or the shoulder of black and red earthenware in Keeladi, carries personal names. One of the sherds carries the vowel ‘o’ at the beginning of the name which is rarely found in both cave and pottery inscriptions. Some of the symbols found in potsherds of Keeladi bear a close resemblance to Indus Valley signs. Vaigai valley civilisation: socio-economic conditions Cultural gap of 1000 years between vagai civilisation and Indus valley civilization: This cultural gap is generally filled with Iron Age material in south India. The graffiti marks encountered in Iron Age sites of south India serve as the only residual links between the Indus Valley Civilisation and south India. No religious worship found. Industrious and advanced civilisation: Existence of industrial units, structures that could have been used to convey molten metal or filter liquid strongly point to the existence of people who were involved in industrial work. Literacy: Learnt art of writing as early as the 6th Century BCE. The letters engraved on pots that clearly demonstrate the “high literacy level of the contemporary society that survived in 6th century BCE.” The Tamil Brahmi script, found engraved on the outer surface or the shoulder of black and red earthenware in Keeladi, carries personal names. Trade: A few pottery samples of 2nd century BCE do contain earth content similar to that of other regions, thereby suggesting that they exchanged goods with neighbouring regions. Urban civilisation, with brick structures, luxury items and proof of internal and external trade. Occupation: The antiquities, taken together, suggest that the prime occupation of the people of Keeladi was agriculture, which was supplemented by the iron industry, carpentry, pottery-making and weaving. Samples of animal skeletal fragments suggest the habitants were predominantly cattle-rearing people. The hump of the Bos indicus species is referred to as imil in Tamil literature, which later came to be known as Tamil. The grandeur of this species, which was also present in the Indus Valley, lies in its hump. Significance of keeladi: A sophisticated urban settlement It has given evidence of urban life and settlements in Tamil Nadu during the Early Historic Period. Khiladi has added greatly to the credibility of Sangam Literature. Conch shell: Typical of the Indus Valley civilisation, and which seems to have been in extensive use in Indus cities, was obtained from [the] south-east coast of the Madras Presidency. Most significant finding is the continuous brick structure that runs over 340 metres Bos indicus: Is also the icon of the ancient sport eru thazhuvuthal or eru anaithal (embracing the bull), which was prevalent in villages around Keeladi, now practised as jallikattu. Analysis of construction material: every specimen contained elements like silica, lime, iron, aluminium and magnesium. Pottery: the potters of Keeladi were familiar with the technique [of using carbon material for black colour and hematite for red] and knew the art of raising the kiln temperature to 1100°C to produce the typical black-and-red ware pottery. Added value to the discipline of archaeology. Keeladi: a heritage cluster The state government has approached ASI to declare five villages - Keeladi, Agaram, Manalur, Konthagai (a burial site) and Pasiapuram - as the Keeladi cluster. The sixth round of excavation is expected to commence in mid-January. What next: More corroborative evidence needed: National Geographic Corporation’s Genographic Project, which traced the origin and migration of man, now looking at the feasibility of setting up an ancient DNA laboratory in Madurai itself. By comparing ancient DNA with the available samples, one can deconstruct the migrational story of Tamil Nadu in the pre-Sangam period. Carbon dating: · Radiocarbon dating (also referred to as carbon dating or carbon-14 dating) is a method for determining the age of an object containing organic material by using the properties of radiocarbon, a radioactive isotope of carbon. · It is based on the fact that radiocarbon (14C) is constantly being created in the atmosphere by the interaction of cosmic rays with atmospheric nitrogen. · The resulting 14C combines with atmospheric oxygen to form radioactive carbon dioxide, which is incorporated into plants by photosynthesis; animals then acquire 14C by eating the plants. When the animal or plant dies, it stops exchanging carbon with its environment, and from that point onwards the amount of 14C it contains begins to decrease as the 14C undergoes radioactive decay.

This civilisation has been described by Tamil poets belonging to the Sangam period Found that the cultural deposits unearthed during the fourth excavation at Keeladi in Sivaganga district could be dated to a period between 6th century BCE and the 1st century CE. The third round (2017): It has no “significant findings”. Fourth round (2018) by SDA (State Department of Archeology): findings included brick structures, terracotta ring wells, fallen roofing with tiles, golden ornaments, broken parts of copper objects, iron implements, terracotta chess pieces, ear ornaments, spindle whorls, figurines, black and redware, rouletted ware and a few pieces of Arretine ware, besides beads made of glass, terracotta and semi-precious stones. The hump of the Bos indicus species is referred to as imil in Tamil literature, which later came to be known as Tamil. The grandeur of this species, which was also present in the Indus Valley, lies in its hump. Significance of keeladi: A sophisticated urban settlement It has given evidence of urban life and settlements in Tamil Nadu during the Early Historic Period. Khiladi has added greatly to the credibility of Sangam Literature. Conch shell: Typical of the Indus Valley civilisation, and which seems to have been in extensive use in Indus cities, was obtained from [the] south-east coast of the Madras Presidency. Analysis of construction material: every specimen contained elements like silica, lime, iron, aluminium and magnesium. Pottery: the potters of Keeladi were familiar with the technique [of using carbon material for black colour and hematite for red] and knew the art of raising the kiln temperature to 1100°C to produce the typical black-and-red ware pottery. Added value to the discipline of archaeology. Keeladi: a heritage cluster The state government has approached ASI to declare five villages - Keeladi, Agaram, Manalur, Konthagai (a burial site) and Pasiapuram - as the Keeladi cluster. The sixth round of excavation is expected to commence in mid-January. What next: More corroborative evidence needed: National Geographic Corporation’s Genographic Project, which traced the origin and migration of man, now looking at the feasibility of setting up an ancient DNA laboratory in Madurai itself. By comparing ancient DNA with the available samples, one can deconstruct the migrational story of Tamil Nadu in the pre-Sangam period. ഈശ്വരനെക്കുറിച്ച സങ്കൽപം എല്ലാ രാജ്യങ്ങളിലും ഒരു പോലെയായിരിയ്ക്കും - സൃഷ്ടിച്ചത് ദൈവമാണെന്ന് എല്ലാ മതങ്ങളും വിശ്വസിയ്ക്കുന്നു - ഞങ്ങളെ സൃഷ്ടിച്ചത് ദൈവമല്ല എന്ന് ഒരു മതവും വിശ്വസിയ്ക്കില്ല - ഈ പൊതുസ്വഭാവത്തെ മുൻ നിർത്തി ഇന്ന രാജ്യത്തു നിന്ന് വന്നതാണെന്ന് പറയുന്നതിൽ യുക്തിയുണ്ടോ ? മറിച്ച്,ദൈവത്തെ സൂചിപ്പിയ്ക്കുന്ന പദത്തിന്റെ അർത്ഥങ്ങൾക്ക് സാമ്യമുണ്ടാകണം - മാത്രമല്ല ആ ദേവതാ സങ്കല്പത്തിന്റെ ഉത്ഭവവത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് ഉള്ള ഐതിഹ്യങ്ങൾ, പുരാണസങ്കൽപങ്ങങ്ങൾ ഇവയുടെ സാമ്യവും ഒന്നാകണം - ഉദാ - ദുർഗ്ഗ = ദുഃഖത്തോടെ ഗമിയ്ക്കത്തക്കവൾ - വളരെ ക്ലേശിച്ച് മാത്രം നേടാവുന്നവൾ എന്നർത്ഥം - എന്തുകൊണ്ടാണ് "വൾ " എന്ന് സ്ത്രീലിംഗമായത് ? ദുർഗ്ഗാ എന്ന പദം സ്ത്രീലിംഗമാണ് എന്നതു തന്നെ. പുല്ലിംഗ പദമായിരുന്നെങ്കിൽ ദുർഗ്ഗ എന്നേ വരു- ക്ലേശത്തോടെ മാത്രം നേടാൻ കഴിയുന്നതെന്താണ് ? ശാന്തി ആണ് - ഈ അർത്ഥം ദേവതയുടെ ഛന്ദസ്സ് നോക്കിയാലേ അറിയൂ - ദേവനാരായണ ഋഷി, ജഗതി ശ്ചന്ദ : ശാന്തി ദുർഗ്ഗാ ദേവതാ എന്നാണ് - ശാന്തി എന്നത് ദു . ഖത്തോടെ നേടാൻ കഴിയുന്ന ദേവതയാണ് എന്നർത്ഥം

So before 65000 years their was a Civilisation in South India and they travelled to Himalayan ranges and Hindu Kush ranges ... And this Hindu Kush Ranges where Indus Valley Civilisation growned up .... So way before Mesopotamia , Anatolia , Steppi etc Indus Valley Civilisation were flourishing in between Hima Yugam or Ice Age
